Chapter 8

The Cross estate was nothing like the promotion hall.

It seemed to burn against the night.

Every window across the massive residence glowed with warm light, spilling over the perfectly maintained grounds while servants moved along the driveway carrying trays of champagne. Music drifted through the open doors as guests arrived one after another.

Darian had seen wealth before. He had seen the ordinary kind worn openly by families like the Veynes, and he had seen the impossible kind that powered the towers of Heavenly City.

The Cross family wore theirs differently.

Loudly.

“You're quiet,” Xena remarked as their car moved slowly up the long driveway.

“I'm listening,” Darian replied.

“To what?” she asked.

“Whatever this place is trying to tell me about itself.”

Xena studied him for a moment, but whatever she saw in his expression made her decide against asking further questions.

Inside, the ballroom was already crowded.

Officers stood in small groups beside Council members. Members of old families occupied the best positions in the room, speaking with the confidence of people who had never been forced to question their place in society.

Darian recognized the type immediately.

They measured people by their clothing, their family name, and the influence behind them.

At the center of the room stood Lord Corwin Cross.

He was tall, silver-haired, and composed. He didn't need to raise his voice to command attention. His presence alone seemed to quiet the people around him.

When he noticed Xena and Darian approaching, his expression warmed slightly.

“Lady Vale,” Corwin greeted them.

His eyes moved to Darian.

“And this must be the man everyone has been talking about.”

“Darian Vale,” Darian introduced himself, extending his hand.

Corwin looked at his hand for a moment before accepting it.

His grip was firm.

Testing.

Darian allowed him to test it without giving him anything useful in return.

“My son tells me you've been remarkably composed,” Corwin observed. “Most men would have struggled to recover after the kind of evening you had.”

“Most men haven't had my practice,” Darian replied.

A faint change crossed Corwin's face.

Interest.

Perhaps even suspicion.

“Practice?” Corwin repeated.

Before Darian could answer, Evander appeared beside his father with a glass in his hand.

His smile came easily when he saw Darian.

“You actually came.”

“I said I would.”

Evander gave a small laugh. “I thought you might change your mind.”

“I don't usually change decisions after making them.”

Evander's smile tightened.

He looked around the ballroom before spreading one hand toward the gathering.

“Welcome to the real Ashfall City, Vale. This is where decisions are made. Take a good look around. I imagine it's quite different from the circles you were used to.”

Darian glanced around the room.

“It's louder.”

A few people nearby exchanged amused looks.

“Otherwise, not much different.”

The amusement disappeared almost as quickly as it came.

Evander's jaw tightened.

“You have quite a tongue for someone with so little behind his name,” he remarked quietly.

“You'd be surprised what's behind my name.”

The words were calm.

Too calm.

Evander's eyes narrowed.

For a brief moment, he looked toward his father.

Corwin had been watching the exchange carefully.

“Come,” Corwin said at last. “There are several people here you should meet, Darian. Our families are becoming closely connected, after all.”

Darian understood immediately.

It wasn't an invitation.

It was a test.

He followed without hesitation.

For the rest of the evening, he was introduced to one influential person after another. Some were polite. Others hid insults beneath pleasant smiles. A few asked questions designed to expose his background.

Darian answered when necessary and remained silent when he didn't need to speak.

Nothing they tried worked.

By the time the car left the Cross estate close to midnight, Xena had been watching him for several minutes.

“You enjoyed that,” she said.

It wasn't quite a question.

“No.”

Darian leaned back against the seat.

“But I didn't lose either.”

He looked through the window at the estate disappearing behind them.

“Some nights, that's enough.”

---

The wedding took place two days later.

It was held in a private hall at the Vale estate, with only the witnesses required by the Council present.

Despite the private arrangement, word had already spread across Ashfall City. By midmorning, people had gathered outside the estate gates, eager to catch a glimpse of the unusual couple whose marriage had become one of the city's favorite subjects of conversation.

Harlan Vale stood toward the back of the hall with his arms folded across his chest.

He had attended because his family name required him to be present.

Nothing more.

He offered neither warmth nor congratulations.

Darian stood at the front of the hall in a dark formal coat.

When the doors opened, Xena walked toward him.

Her ceremonial dress was simple and elegant, without the kind of decoration normally expected at a high-profile wedding. There was nothing romantic about the way she carried herself.

She looked exactly as she did when entering a Council meeting.

Focused.

Controlled.

Practical.

When she reached him, she leaned slightly closer.

“Ready?” she murmured.

“As ready as I'll ever be.”

Darian glanced toward the officiant.

“For a wedding that isn't really a wedding.”

A faint movement touched the corner of Xena's mouth.

It disappeared before anyone else could notice.

The ceremony was brief.

There were no long speeches or emotional declarations.

They exchanged the required vows, signed the official documents, and completed the ceremony exactly as their arrangement had demanded.

When the officiant finally declared them married, the applause that followed was polite and restrained.

There was more obligation than emotion behind it.

Afterward, the guests gathered for a brief reception.

Darian was speaking with one of the Council representatives when Gideon Veyne approached with Marcella beside him.

Gideon's expression was carefully neutral.

“Lady Vale,” he greeted, giving Xena a slight nod.

Then his attention shifted to Darian.

“Darian. Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

Gideon studied him.

“I trust you'll rise to the occasion of your new position.”

“I intend to.”

“See that you do.”

Gideon's voice lowered so only Darian could hear the next words.

“I understand my family's logistics operations have run into some unexpected difficulties this week. Strange, considering everything else that's happened lately.”

Darian met his gaze without blinking.

“Difficulties happen in business, Lord Veyne. I wouldn't read too much into timing.”

For several seconds, Gideon said nothing.

Something uneasy appeared in his eyes.

He hadn't looked at Darian that way before.

As if he were beginning to wonder whether the quiet man standing before him was really as ordinary as everyone had assumed.

Finally, Gideon stepped away.

Marcella followed him without saying a word.

Xena watched them leave before looking at Darian.

“That was pointed.”

“Was it?”

“You know it was.”

She folded her arms.

“Gideon Veyne doesn't get uneasy over nothing.”

Darian remained silent.

Xena studied him.

“What exactly did you do to his logistics operations?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

Her expression tightened slightly.

“Some questions aren't part of our arrangement,” Darian added calmly.

Xena held his gaze.

Curiosity was clearly fighting with the boundaries she had established when they first made their agreement.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Eventually, she looked away.

Across the hall, neither of them noticed Evander standing near the exit with his father.

Lord Corwin Cross held a data slate between them.

The figures displayed across its screen were enough to erase every trace of amusement from Evander's face.

Western trade routes were collapsing.

Accounts were being frozen.

Debts were appearing where there had once been certainty.

And losses were spreading through the Cross family's businesses faster than either man could explain.

Corwin scrolled through the figures slowly.

“This wasn't happening last month,” Evander muttered.

“I know,” Corwin replied.

His voice was low.

Serious.

For the first time, the Cross family was looking at numbers that could threaten everything they had spent decades building.

And neither father nor son had any idea who was responsible.

By the time our legal team noticed the routing changes, the documents had already changed hands twice. We can't trace ownership beyond the third layer. Every lawyer we've hired hits the same wall in a different jurisdiction.”“And the

The rest of the evening wound down with surprising quiet, though not before Harlan had stormed out of the hall and Evander had followed right behind him.Darian accompanied Xena back to her estate once the reception cleared, eager to make the arrangement look as binding as possible now that every pair of eyes in the district was locked onto them.Even so, Darian had matters of his own to attend to. He waited until the Vale estate settled into midnight stillness before making his move.Xena's wing of the manor had gone dark an hour prior. Out at the perimeter, the guards had swapped shifts, sliding comfortably into the lazy cadence of men expecting nothing whatsoever to happen on a rainy night. "Though I have one condition.""Name it," she answered."There are things about my past you aren't going to understand right away," he murmured, watching the rain streak the glass.
