Chapter six

Rose stumbled backward, shocked and enraged by the slap. She couldn't believe Ethan had dared to slap her. Her face burning with fury, she raised her hand to slap him back.

But Ethan caught her wrist, his grip like a vice.

“Don't you dare,” he said, his voice deadly, his eyes blazing with anger. “How dare you think of raising your dirty hands at me?”

Rose struggled to pull her hand free, but Ethan's grip only tightened, sending waves of pain through her wrist.

Caleb's face darkened with rage as he watched Ethan slap Rose. How dare he disrespect him like that? Caleb charged at Ethan with a fierce battle cry, ready to strike.

But Ethan was too quick. With lightning-fast reflexes, he sidestepped Caleb's attack, sending Caleb crashing to the ground. Caleb winced in pain, struggling to get back to his feet.

His pride wounded, Caleb seethed with anger. He couldn't believe Ethan had made him look like a fool. Rose, meanwhile, was still trapped in Ethan's grip, her face contorted in pain. Ethan's eyes never left hers, his gaze piercing as he held her wrist in a tight vice.

Ethan pinned Rose against the wall, his eyes glinting with a mixture of anger and amusement.

“What's wrong, cat got your tongue?” he taunted, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Rose's face twisted in a mixture of pain and rage, but she remained silent, her eyes blazing with fury.

She was waiting for Ethan to release her, her mind racing with plans for revenge. She vowed to make his life a living hell, both in and out of prison.

She would stop at nothing to make him suffer, to bring him to his knees in front of the whole world, begging for her forgiveness. Only then would she consider forgiving him.

Ethan released Rose's wrist roughly, and she collapsed to the floor, wincing in pain. He dusted his hands, a satisfied smirk on his face.

Just as he turned to leave, Caleb spoke up, his voice low and menacing.

“Don't take another step,” he warned, his eyes flashing with anger.

Ethan raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement dancing on his lips. “Oh, I'm shaking in my boots,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Caleb's jaw clenched, his face reddening with rage.

“Get down on your knees and apologize,” he spat, his eyes blazing with fury.

Ethan burst out laughing, the sound echoing through the room. He raked his hair back, his eyes glinting with amusement.

“I'd love to see you try to make me,” he said, his voice taunting.

Caleb's face twisted with anger, he took a step forward, his gaze locking with Ethan's in a silent challenge.

Rose watched, her eyes flashing with malice. She longed to see Ethan humbled, kneeling at her feet.

She began to fake sob, hoping to manipulate the situation to her advantage.

Caleb's gaze flicked from Ethan's face to Rose's, then back to Ethan. “Get down on your knees, now!” he demanded.

Ethan raised an eyebrow. “And if I don't?” he asked, his voice laced with amusement.

Caleb's face twisted with anger. “Then you'll get nothing from the divorce, and you'll be bullied in prison,” he spat, his voice calm but menacing.

Rose slowly wiped away her tears, a mischievous smile spreading across her face. She was enjoying this, and she had made up her mind that even if he apologized he wouldn't get a penny from the divorce, no matter what.

Ethan chuckled, a low, mocking sound. “You know, you must be stupid,” he said, his eyes glinting with amusement.

Caleb and Rose gasped in unison, and Caleb pointed to himself. He asked, his voice incredulous. “Me?!”

Ethan nodded, his smile growing wider. "Yes, you. If you think I care about a hundred thousand dollars, Caleb, you must be stupid.”

“You have not only insulted Rose, but also me!”

Caleb's face turned beet red with rage, his eyes bulging with fury. His clenched fists trembled with restrained anger, and his jaw was set in a tight, menacing line. A vein pulsed in his forehead, and his breathing was labored, as if he was struggling to contain his wrath.

He seethed with hatred for Ethan, who had not only looked him in the eye but had also insulted him. No one had ever dared to defy the Swayne family like this. They always commanded respect, and people trembled at the mention of their name.

Caleb watched, his anger boiling over, as Ethan turned to leave. He gritted his teeth, his eyes blazing with fury.

He rushed to Rose's side, concern etched on his face.

“Are you okay?” he asked, but Rose shook her head, still seething with anger.

Caleb's gaze snapped back to Ethan, who was reaching for the door handle.

“I know why you're here,” Caleb spat, his voice venomous.

Ethan's hand froze, and he turned to face Caleb, a look of surprise and curiosity on his face.

How did Caleb know why he was here? Ethan's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with questions.

But before he could ask any questions, Caleb's next words made Ethan's lips curl into a mocking smile.

Caleb sneered, his eyes gleaming with malice.

“Since next year marks your fifth year in prison, the security guard brought you here to do some community service, right?” he asked, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Ethan's response was a mocking smile, his eyes glinting with amusement. He didn't bother to reply, his silence only fueling Caleb's anger.

Undeterred, Caleb continued, his smirk growing wider.

“I'm surprised they brought you to a rich family's house to do your service. Guess that's what happens when the Edwards want something – they can make anything happen.”

Caleb's eyes sparkled with contempt as he regarded Ethan. He believes Ethan was brought here to clean the house like some regular maids.

Caleb strolled over to the living room table, a sly grin spreading across his face. He picked up a valuable-looking jug, admiring it with a mischievous glint in his eye.

“This little treasure earns five hundred dollars,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

With a flourish, Caleb walked over to where Ethan was standing, the jug held tantalizingly in front of him.

Then, with a sudden, dramatic motion, he smashed the jug to the floor.

“Oh my, Ethan just broke the jug!” Caleb exclaimed, his voice dripping with false innocence.

Rose's cheeks spread into a wide smile as she watched Caleb's clever move, clearly delighted by his cunning plan.

“Serves him right.” Rose muttered under her breath.

Caleb and Rose were at the Edward's residence to extend an invitation to Maria's wedding.

The Edward's family and the Swayne family had recently signed a business agreement, putting them on friendly terms.

Rose turned to Ethan, her voice dripping with condescension.

“If I were you, I'd be on my knees begging right now. Maybe then we'd consider showing you some favor.”

She emphasized her point, “Caleb is the youngest master of the Swayne family, while I'm from the esteemed Bryce family. And you…?” She paused, shaking her head in disdain. "You're the son of a nobody. So, tell me, whose side of the story do you think the Edward's family would believe? A nobody like you or influential people like us?!”

“One of my men just told me something interesting.” Victoria’s stomach dropped but she kept her face still. Her heart pounded as she hoped her secret had not been leaked out. Ethan watched her eyes. Searching. “Jack escaped.” She let out a big sigh of relief she never knew she was holding. Victoria blinked once. “Escaped?” “Three hours ago. He took a pistol and vanished into the scrub.” She swallowed. “How?” “Doesn’t matter how. He’s out. And he’s coming.” Ethan reached inside his jacket. Pulled out a small, matte-black Glock 43. The tiny pistol looked almost delicate in his palm. He glanced around and then pressed it into her hand. Her fingers closed around the grip automatically. Cold metal. Familiar weight. “Hide it,” he said. “Waistband. Small of your back. Easy draw.” Victoria stared at the gun, then at him. “Why are you giving me this?” “Because tonight, when we get home, you’re going to pretend.” With that, they got into the car and drove off. The

Ethan pushed the bedroom door open without knocking. The room was quiet. He glanced around. Victoria’s silk robe lay crumpled across the foot of the bed. Her dress from dinner was folded neatly on the chair. He stepped inside and closed the door with his heel. His eyes swept the space once, twice. Bathroom door shut. Water running. He moved fast. He lifted the robe first—nothing underneath. Then the dress—pockets empty. He crouched, checked under the bed, under the mattress edge. His fingers found the hidden compartment in the vanity almost by instinct. It was empty. He straightened, jaw tight. His gaze landed on the nightstand. Her phone sat there, screen dark, charging cable coiled beside it. He picked it up. The lock screen showed the time: 11:47 p.m. He swiped. No passcode. She never bothered with one on this phone. Arrogant. Or maybe she wanted him to look. He opened the messaging app. Nothing unusual. Weather updates. Calendar reminders. A dry-cleaning confirm
