Chapter seven

Upon hearing what Steven just said, Jeremy’s glare cut through the room, pinning Steven to the floor. His eyes were so cold that Steven felt a shiver run through his spine. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe. Jeremy took a slow, deliberate step closer, the weight of his anger filling every corner of the room.

Steven’s hands trembled as he tried to steady himself, the blood on his lip mixing with the spit he swallowed hard. He forced himself to look up, but Jeremy’s presence was like a mountain pressing down on him.

“I’ll come for you too when the time is right,” Jeremy said in a low, steady voice, his tone so flat it made the words feel like a death sentence. He didn’t blink once as he stared directly into Steven’s eyes.

Steven’s throat went dry. For another second, he almost believed Jeremy would strike again right there. He swallowed hard, nodding slightly as though he understood.

“Empty threat!” Mrs. Raymond snapped from where she stood. Her shrill voice cut through the silence. “He doesn’t have the power to do anything. Someone who depended on us to survive!” She burst into mocking laughter, her voice echoing off the walls.

Jeremy slowly turned his head toward her. The laughter died on her lips when she met his eyes. There was no fear in his gaze, only a deadly calm that seemed far more dangerous than his earlier rage. He swept his gaze across the room, one face at a time, pausing as if committing each expression to memory.

It was as though he was engraving their faces into his mind for the day he would return.

Mrs. Raymond broke the silence again, though her voice was slightly tighter than before. “Stop all this useless drama! Don’t be late for tomorrow’s appointment. At exactly twelve, come and sign the divorce papers.”

Jeremy let out a long breath, as though releasing the last of his anger. Then he gave them one final glance, his lips curling into a faint, bitter smile.

“See you at exactly twelve,” he said in a voice that was calm but chilling.

Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked out of the house.

Behind him, the room erupted again. Patricia’s voice was shrill as she shouted something he no longer cared to hear. Steven muttered curses under his breath, trying to clean the blood from his lip. Mr. Raymond’s booming voice barked more threats. Mrs. Raymond kept laughing as if her mockery could erase what had just happened.

But Jeremy heard it all.

Every word followed him down the parking lot. He heard their insults, their laughter, their dismissal of his pain. He didn’t stop. He didn’t turn back. He just kept walking.

Outside, the rain had slowed to a drizzle, the last few drops sliding off the roof and onto the wet ground. The air was cold, but Jeremy didn’t feel it. The fire burning inside him had made him numb to everything else.

By the time he reached his car, the drizzle had stopped completely. The streets glistened with rainwater, reflecting the dim streetlights. Jeremy’s breath came out in sharp bursts as he leaned against the car for a moment, his chest heaving.

At that moment, Jeremy’s phone began to ring. The sharp sound broke through the heavy silence he was in. His eyes flicked down without hesitation. He had been waiting for that call no, expecting it. After all, he had given Oliver a direct instruction earlier. It could only be him.

Without wasting another second, Jeremy slid his hand into the inner pocket of his coat, pulled out the phone, and glanced at the screen.

Just as he thought it was Oliver.

He didn’t delay. He tapped the green button and brought the phone to his ear.

“Talk,” Jeremy said sharply, his tone firm and cold.

On the other end, Oliver’s voice came quickly, respectful, slightly rushed, as if he had been pacing the whole time. “Master, I actually have good news and bad news. About the seventh item you instructed me to—”

But Jeremy didn’t let him finish. His eyes narrowed slightly, the muscles in his jaw shifting.

“Skip the nonsense,” Jeremy said flatly, cutting him off. “Get to the point.”

Oliver, hearing that tone, didn’t argue. He lowered his head instinctively, even though Jeremy couldn’t see him through the phone.

“Yes, Master,” he said right away, his voice lowering. “I’ve successfully secured six of the seven items you sent me earlier. But the second item on the list… it’s still missing. We haven’t been able to get it.”

Upon hearing what Oliver just said, Jeremy didn’t respond right away. He stood still, his eyes fixed on the floor, the phone still pressed to his ear. Then slowly, he exhaled a deep breath that barely moved his chest but said everything.

He already knew this would happen, Item number two.

That one had always been the most unpredictable, the most looked for, and perhaps one of the most important. Even when he sent Oliver out earlier, he knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Still, deep down, Jeremy had hoped for a miracle. A part of him had wanted to believe that maybe, just maybe, Oliver could pull it off without needing his help.

But hearing those words now, he felt something shift in his chest, it wasn't anger, not fear. Just... resolve.

They had twenty-four hours left. Only one item remained. And Jeremy had never been the type to leave something so critical in someone else's hands.

He brought the phone closer to his mouth, his voice low but steady. “Oliver, don’t worry about it anymore.”

Immediately Oliver froze on the other end. “But Master—”

Jeremy didn’t let him finish.

“Six are already secured,” he said, eyes now locked on the window ahead, his reflection barely visible against the glass. “I’ll handle the second item myself.”

And with that, without waiting for another word, without hesitation, Jeremy ended the call.

Then without wasting another Seconds he reached for his back pocket and pulled out an old SIM card. His hands shook as he stared at it for a brief moment. That small piece of plastic held a part of his life he had kept buried for years.

With a deep breath, he slipped his old SIM card into his phone and powered it on. The moment the network connected, his screen lit up with missed calls and unread messages from a life he had walked away from.

He ignored them all. Instead, he dialed a number he hadn’t called in five years.

The call barely rang once before the receiver picked up, as though he had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Young master! Finally…” the receiver’s voice cracked with relief and excitement. “We have waited for this day for the past five years. Not a single day has passed without me checking my phone, praying that you would call. Everyone has been—”

Jeremy cut him short, his voice sharp and heavy with authority.

“I am not in the mood for long talks, I only called to inform you of my coming back.” he said flatly.

“I still have something important to do tomorrow,” he said slowly. “When I’m done, I will return home and assume my rightful position .”

The receiver gasped, his voice suddenly bright with excitement, as though this was the news he had been waiting to hear for years. “Yes, young master… this is a good—”

But before he could finish, Jeremy ended the call.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket and stood still for a moment, his breathing slowing.

“When I'm done, the Raymonds will regret hurting me so deep!”

But nobody seemed particularly convinced by his explanation, and the situation was deteriorating rapidly. Even Elijah's father, who had been standing among the crowd of influential guests trying to maintain his distinguished dignity throughout this increasingly embarrassing evening, was now staring at his son with barely contained fury and mortification.“Elijah,” his father said in a low but absolutely furious voice that somehow managed to convey decades of disappointment and present humiliation simultaneously. “Who invited you into this situation tonight? Why on earth would you attempt something like this in front of all these people? Do you have any idea what you're doing to our family's reputation right now?”The assembled crowd of powerful and influential individuals who had flooded into Eat with Pride began muttering among themselves, and the consensus forming among several of them was becoming increasingly hostile toward Elijah and his companions.“They should be removed immed

At that moment, the manager made a swift and calculated decision that self-preservation and the protection of everything he had worked so hard to build had to take absolute priority over every other consideration. He knew with terrifying clarity that he needed to perform the role of a completely uninformed and appropriately concerned restaurant manager with absolutely convincing precision. He paused, his eyes scanning his security team to ensure they understood the gravity of what he was saying. “Specifically, any man, any male person of any age who attempts to exit Eat with Pride from this point forward, you stop them immediately at the door. You hold them politely but firmly, and you notify me instantly so I can personally verify their identity and determine whether they might be the person we're looking for. I don't care if they claim to be the mayor, the police chief, or God himself - nobody leaves without my clearance. Do you understand these instructions completely?”His security guards nodded with professional efficiency and immediately began repositioning themselves strategically around all visible exits from the establishment, their trained eyes already scanning for anyone who might attempt to leave. So at that moment, having given his explicit orders and having already wasted far too much valuable time standing outside in the cold night air while the real o
