Then the general's voice carried authority as he signaled his men. “Take him away,”he ordered, nodding toward Dr. Maxwell.

“I have unfinished business with him, but that can wait. Lock him up where I can find him later.”

Maxwell barely had the strength to resist. His body sagged as the General guards grabbed him, his pleas turning to broken sobs.

“Please... I'm sorry... I have a family... please…” His voice trailed off as he was dragged from the room, his words swallowed by the silence that followed.

At that moment the mayor turned his attention back to Damien, a mixture of shame and gratitude on his face.

“I owe you an apology... and my mother’s life,” he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Had I listened to that fraud, she wouldn’t be breathing right now. I was blinded by my own doubts, but you—“ He exhaled, shaking his head. “You did what no one else could.”
