"Breaking News!"

The words echoed across every television station in the Eastern ports and the Northern region.

The anchor's voice was direct and serious:

"Following the resolution of the Military Council earlier today, Major General Asher River has been stripped of his rank, medals, privileges, and every military honor. Effective immediately, he has been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces."

Within minutes, the news spread like wildfire, and phones rang without stopping. Videos flooded social media and, within minutes, generated thousands of views.

People abandoned their meals, meetings, and conversations just to watch the report. The man once praised as the nation's greatest war hero had become the biggest disgrace of the year.

"The investigation is still classified," the anchor continued. "However, military officials insist that the punishment followed overwhelming evidence. Major General Asher River has declined to make any public statement."

Across the country...

People sniggered, some shook their heads, while others felt disappointed. No one believed the hero they once admired would fall this hard.

The heavy gates of the military headquarters slowly opened.

Asher River walked out alone.

A simple black travel bag rested on his shoulder. The uniform that had followed him through countless battlefields was gone. So were the medals that had once been accorded to him.

He wore an ordinary black shirt and dark trousers. At first glance, he looked like any other man walking down the street.

The soldiers guarding the gate stood in silence. Not one of them saluted while a few lowered their eyes.

Others tightened their knuckles behind their backs, pretending not to notice him. They knew the rules. A dishonorably discharged officer no longer deserved military respect.

The moment Asher stepped onto the sidewalk, dozens of reporters rushed toward him.

Camera shutters flashed around his face. Microphones were shoved toward him from every direction.

One of the investigative journalists mouthed with judgment laced in his tone: "General River!"

"Did you betray the country? Do you admit your crimes? Were the rumors true? Do you regret throwing your future away?"

The questions came one after another, each one reeking of mockery, accusations, and humiliation.

Asher never slowed down; his face remained calm. He already knew none of them would believe him even if he'd responded.

The officials could strip him of his rank and tear the medals from his uniform. But they could never take away the discipline the battlefield had bestowed on his soul.

The youngest reporter pushed through the crowd:

"General!"

"If you're innocent, why aren't you defending yourself?"

Asher finally stopped for a brief second, every camera still focused on him. Thousands watching the live broadcast held their breath.

He looked at the young reporter.

Then he gave a faint smile.

"The truth doesn't become a lie because the crowd is loud."

Those were the only words he spoke. He adjusted the strap of his travel bag and continued walking, leaving every reporter standing there in stunned silence.

Nearly an hour later...

A taxi stopped before a familiar mansion. Asher stepped out and quietly looked at the iron gate before him.

The Bennett Villa.

He had lived there for eight years. It was supposed to be home, yet standing outside that gate felt heavier than facing enemy gunfire. He let out a hitched breath before pushing the gate open. The creak sound echoed across the compound.

Before he could take another step…

"Daddy!"

A little girl ran out of the house as fast as her tiny legs could carry her. Her school bag bounced behind her.

One shoe wasn't even properly tied, but she didn't care. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she threw herself into his arms.

"Daddy!"

Asher's tired eyes softened.

He quickly dropped his travel bag and caught her before she could fall.

"My Sunshine."

His voice became gentle.

The little girl wrapped both arms tightly around his neck.

He managed to chime in, controlling his emotions: "I missed you so much."

"I believed you'd come back. They kept saying you wouldn't… But I knew they were lying."

Asher closed his eyes for a brief moment. Everything that had happened that day: the unjust tribunal, the heartbreaking insults. The cameras and the shame. For one small moment, it all disappeared.

He gently kissed her forehead.

"Daddy missed you too."

Lily looked up with watery eyes: "I protected your favorite mug and cleaned your room every day. I told everyone you'd come home."

Asher laughed softly: "Then my Sunshine has been very brave."

She nodded proudly.

"I learned it from you."

A warm smile appeared on his face. It was the first real smile he had worn all day.

Then…

"Enough!"

The cold voice cut through the beautiful moment like a knife.

Asher slowly lifted his head.

Standing at the front entrance was Elaine Bennett, his mother-in-law. She folded her arms tightly across her chest.

Her face carried nothing but disgust. Instead of looking at a son-in-law returning home, she looked at a burden she wanted gone.

"So… You still dared to show your face." Her voice was loud enough for everyone nearby to hear: "I watched the news. The whole country did. It recorded the highest viewed content in the last decade."

"Our family has become a joke because of you."

She pointed toward the gate with a bloodshot glare: "Leave! You are no longer welcome here."

Lily immediately stepped in front of Asher. Her tiny body blocked him as if she could protect him from the entire world.

"No!"

"You can't send Daddy away!"

Elaine frowned: "Lily. I'm not in for such K-DRAMA rehearsals, move aside."

The little girl shook her head: "This is Daddy's home too."

Elaine let out a cold, cruel laugh: "Home?" She measured Asher up to his toes, wearing a cruel expression: "A man without a rank. A man thrown away by the military, whose name has become a national joke."

"What home does he have?"

Several servants had quietly gathered nearby. None of them dared to speak. They had worked in the Bennett family for years.

Unlike Elaine...

They remembered Asher River. The Major General who regardless of his military portfolio, greeted every worker politely. The man who secretly paid hospital bills for a servant's sick mother.

The man who never acted superior despite wearing a general's uniform.

Watching him stand there carrying one small travel bag, their hearts felt heavy.

Elaine noticed their consoled expressions and became even angrier: "What are all of you staring at?"

"Get back to work!"

The servants immediately scattered. No one wanted to lose their job. At that moment, voices came from outside the villa and chimed through the background:

"I heard Asher River came home."

"Really?"

"Let's see the fallen war hero."

Within moments, curious neighbors began gathering outside the gate. Some openly laughed, while others pointed their phones toward the compound.

One man mocked loudly: "So this is the mighty General? I expected someone taller."

Another laughed.

"Heroes don't stay heroes forever."

The laughter spread.

Lily's little face turned red: "They're bad people! They shouldn't laugh at my daddy!"

Asher gently rested his hand on her head: "It's alright, Sunshine. They're only speaking from what they know."

Elaine scoffed: "What they know? They know enough."

She looked straight into Asher's eyes: "You brought shame to this family. You've destroyed Serena's hard work. If you have even a little dignity left..."

"You'll leave before she comes out."

Asher shook his head in utter disappointment. His fingers slowly tightened around the handle of his travel bag.

Not because her words were new, but because every insult was falling into Lily's innocent ears.

Then...

The front door slowly opened. High heels clicked softly against the marble floor. A graceful woman stepped outside.

She wore a cream-colored business suit. Her beautiful face looked pale after everything she had watched on television.

This was Serena Bennett…

Asher's wife.

She had rushed home the moment the news broke. She wanted answers on what really happened. But the moment her eyes landed on the man standing in the courtyard...

Every word she had prepared disappeared.

She froze.

The crowd outside also fell strangely quiet.

Just then...

The sound of several powerful engines whooshed from the end of the street. Five black luxury SUVs slowly drove toward the Bennett Villa before screeching to a halt outside the gate.

The doors opened at the same time. More than a dozen men in black suits stepped out. Their movements were accurate, expressions were cold.

Without sparing anyone else a glance. They walked straight toward Asher River. Then, before the shocked eyes of those present—

Every one of them lowered his head.

"Commander…”
