After what seemed like ages, Aeron’s eyes blink open.

The bright light almost blinds him as he stumbled to his feet.

But to his shock, his hands are untied.

There's no execution ground.

No crowd.

No Supreme priest.

No king Tharos.

He stared around in confusion.

The sky was unnaturally black. Large mountains than he had ever seen covered the landscape and an eerie silence surrounded him. Everything about this place looked worn with time.

“Where am I?” He muttered to himself. “Am I dead?”

Suddenly, a hot air hit his neck from behind, causing his hairs to stand on their ends.

What was that?

With slow, precautious steps, he turned around.

The creature standing before him made him scuffle back in panic and terror.

The large, golden, ancient eyes were each the size of a human head. The large scales on its skin were rock hard with age and the breath of its nostrils were as hot as the fire of hell itself.

A dragon!

Aeron opened his mouth to speak but no words formed.

His eyes left the dragon for a moment and slowly widened as he took in the scene before him.

Dragons.

A wide variety of them.

Some had raw fire on their skin as they stood. Others had large ice shards shooting from their skin. Some bore the zit of thunderbolts on their scales. Some where are black as the darkest of nights itself.

He was surrounded. Their eyes seemed to pierce into his soul.

Trembling, Aeron shut his eyes. He could make a good lunch for them. What a worse way to die! Wouldn't the gallows have been a better option?

But one minute passed. He was still breathing.

Slowly, he opened his eyes again, preparing to be terrified by the humongous beasts.

But he nearly passed out in shock.

They were all kneeling with their heads bowed. Thousands of them.

Finally, he was able to put together coherent words, “What is going on? Why are you kneeling?”

Silence.

Then suddenly, a dragon with skin older than time itself and eyes that bore ancient knowledge approached him.

His scales were scarred, its golden eyes worn with age. It was significantly larger than every of them that the ground beneath its feet trembled as it walked.

“Welcome, master. We've been expecting you. My name. Is Valeor.”

For a moment, Aeron froze. His ears had to be playing some mean tricks on him.

He stared behind him. Perhaps this mighty dragon was talking to someone else.

“I'm talking to you.”

Aeron couldn't help but chuckle despite himself. “You must be mistaken.”

The dragon watched with humorless eyes. “Destiny is never mistaken, Drakon.”

“Drakon? You're definitely mistaken. My name is –”

“Aeron.”

Aeron froze.

The dragon seemed to read his mind. “I know your human name as well. But that's not your true identity. You are Drakon, our king.”

Aeron took steps backwards, his head still shaking in disbelief.

“I must be having a very weird dream. This can't be happening.”

“Yet, it is happening.”

“I couldn't even awaken a tiny beast in five years. Not even a spark. I'm cursed. Now, you're calling me your king?”

Vaelor didn't look surprised. “I know. But you're not cursed. You never were.”

Aeron stared at him, a defeated expression on his face. “Then when can't I awaken a beast? Why am I powerless?”

The dragon chucked, a deep rumbling sound that seemed to make the earth beneath their feet resonate.

“Powerless? You're the most powerful man alive!”

Aeron stared at him with even more frustration. “Stop saying that. If I'm truly powerful, where is this power then?”

“It has been sealed within you even before you were born. They're simply too much for you to awaken normally. The chaos that would follow will be disastrous. It's not yet time for that.”

Aeron’s eyes widened. Everything that had ever happened in his life suddenly became clearer.

“Wow.”

“But don't be too happy,” Valeor chipped in. "Knowing you're Drakon doesn't make you powerful automatically. You still need a lot of training."

Aeron took offense in that. "Are you saying I'm too weak? I spent the last five years doing rigorous training to awaken my guardian beast."

"I know. It doesn't mean you're ready to face the enemies that would come after you if they know you're Drakon before you're strong enough. These are ancient enemies who walked the earth before you were born."

Aeron let out a sigh, his excitement depleting into something more sober.

Five years of being ignored had proven to be useful after all. Being underestimated would save his life.

"What do you say, king Drakon? Are you ready to be trained to acquire your position?"

"Of course! What else do I live for?"

Valeor smiled slightly. "Good. You'd need a beast by your side while you embark on this journey. I'd be that beast."

Aeron grinned. "Really? That would be great!"

He could imagine the look on everyone's faces when they saw the mighty dragon beside him.

But with a knowing glint in his eyes, a thick fog surrounded Valeor ,swallowing him.

As the fog finally dissolved, Aeron stared around, confused. "Valeor?"

"Down here," a tiny voice squeaked from the ground.

Aeron stared in utter disbelief, his expression drooping. "You have to be kidding me. This is your plan?"

"It's called concealment."

The tiny snake on the ground slithered from his legs until it got to his palms. It wrapped itself around his wrist.

"You turned into a tiny snake!" He groaned.

"A very convincing disguise."

As Aeron let out a sigh, the realm around him slowly began to dissolve into the air.

"What's happening again?"

But he got no response. Suddenly, he felt himself descend with an unearthly speed.

Valeor's voice floated around him. "Remember this, Drakon. You're still weak."

"So what am I supposed to do?" Aeron wheezed, dizziness overwhelming him.

"Survive!"

Immediately, his eyes snapped open again and the familiar setting of the execution grounds came into view.

Holding his head, he muttered, "Was it all a dream?"

But he felt a movement across his wrist.

He pulled his hands back into view. He had been untied, though he still sat before the gallows.

In place of the ropes, wrapped around his wrists, was a tiny snake…..

Ria watched the exchange in silence, her eyes moving between them as she began to understand that there was far more history between the three people standing before her than she had initially assumed.Cassius stepped forward.“Aeron.”Aeron turned toward him.“You seem to have forgotten who you’re speaking to.”A sneer formed at the corner of Aeron’s mouth. “Then remind me.”Cassius’s jaw tightened. The atmosphere changed instantly. He really wanted to deal with Aeron! Even Ria’s eyes sharpened. She clearly didn't tolerate disrespect. Cassius stared at Aeron for several seconds before a slow smile appeared on his face, and although the smile looked controlled, the tension in his fingers betrayed how deeply the casual dismissal had irritated him.“You survived one execution and suddenly believe you’re important.”“I didn’t say that,” Aeron hissed, feeling irritated. “You don’t need to.” Cassius glanced toward the arena. “If you’re determined to embarrass yourself, at least make it

  • Chapter Seven:

The moment the man’s hand came swinging toward Jace’s face, Aeron caught his wrist so cleanly that the slap never landed! The sudden stop was so sharp that the entire entrance seemed to freeze around them as the gang member stared at Aeron’s fingers wrapped tightly around his arm.Aeron did not raise his voice or even bother to look angry, which somehow made the situation more threatening. While the man struggled to pull himself free and the other gang members began closing in around them, Aeron simply held his ground with the same cold expression he had worn when he first stepped into the arena.“Don’t touch him.”The gang member’s face twisted with humiliation as he pulled again, but Aeron’s grip did not loosen. When he finally shoved the man backward, the force sent him stumbling into two of his companions and immediately turned the mocking atmosphere around the entrance into something far more dangerous.“You little—”“Enough.”The single word came from behind them, quiet enough

After leaving the gang behind, Aeron did not wait around for the old man to thank him, because whatever gratitude the man wanted to offer could wait, and he had already spent more than enough time in that part of the city. His thoughts remained fixed on what had happened earlier, particularly on the strange power that had surged through his body when Valeor allowed him to borrow a fraction of his strength. Even though the power had been terrifying enough to crush five men in moments, the pain that followed had been just as frightening, leaving every muscle in his body aching as though he had pushed himself far beyond his limits.Whatever Valeor truly was, Aeron knew one thing. He could not depend on that power carelessly. His body was not ready for it.With barely enough money to last him a few days, he headed toward the poorer side of Valerius, hoping to find somewhere cheap enough to sleep without wasting everything he had. He barely turned into a narrow street when a commotion ah

“Leave him alone.”Aeron’s voice was not loud, but it was enough to make the men turn. The elderly man was still being held by the front of his clothes. His face was bruised, and blood stained the corner of his mouth. The five men slowly looked Aeron up and down. They exchanged glances and then one of them laughed.“And who are you?"Aeron walked closer. For some reason, the hugeness of the men didn't intimidate him like it should have.“I said, leave him alone.”The man holding the old man shoved him aside, focusing on Aeron with a deadly glare. “He owes us money.”The elderly man nearly fell. “I already paid you!” he shouted. “I gave you almost everything I had!”One of the men kicked the ground beside him, scratches around his body. “You paid what you wanted to pay. We told you the amount changed.”“The amount keeps changing every time I come here!” the old man cried. “How am I supposed to pay you?”“That isn’t our problem.”Aeron studied the five men.Their clothes were rough, wea

  • CHAPTER Four

Aeron pushed open the door of his family home and stepped inside. For a moment, nobody spoke. It looked like a ghost had walked in. His mother was the first to move. The moment she saw him standing there alive, relief flashed across her face. She had begun to believe that her son might never return from the execution ground even after being moments away from death. However, the relief did not last however. Her eyes slowly moved down to the tiny snake wrapped around Aeron’s wrist. His father noticed it too and his face contorted slowly. The man stared at the little creature for several second “What did you awaken?” Aeron looked at him calmly. “My Guardian Beast.” His father frowned, hoping there was more explanation. “I know that. But what is it?” “A snake.” Silence filled the room. His father looked at the snake again as though it offended him. “A snake?” His face hardened. “After five years?” Silence. “After five years of waiting?” his father continued, his voice was r

  • CHAPTER THREE

Aeron’s eyes snapped open to the execution grounds again. Only a few seconds had passed. Everyone was still murmuring and confused. Ignar’s eyes still burned brightly with curiosity as he stared intently at him. But something was different; and it wasn't just the fact that the weather had returned back to normal. Aeron felt a strange fire burn within his chest now, but it didn't hurt this time. It gave him a sense of confidence and identity. “What is that?!” The executioner shrieked, jumping back slightly. That was when the priest noticed the snake wrapped around his arm. But because he was sitted behind the gallows, most of the spectators couldn't see the snake. Questions and whispers floated around the square. “What do you think it is?”“Has he finally awoken a beast?”“Good heavens! Is the land purged?”“After five years?!”“What are the odds? That's impossible!”Priest Ignar raised his hands to silence the crowd. “Patience, everyone. It would seem the lad has awakened so
