Fredrick stepped in again“—just a salesman. Isn’t that right, Rivers?”

Elias felt his blood boil as Fredrick interrupted him. The nerve of the man. He was just about to speak, to put everything in place, and this fool had to run his mouth.

Frederick chuckled. “Tell them the truth. You were ditched by a woman you barely knew. Publicly humiliated. And now you're here pretending to be something you're not.”

Chloe raised a brow, folding her arms. “Is that true?”Her tone was cold.

Elias met her eyes. “I work in sales, yes.”

Ryan finally spoke “Sales? Is that really what you do?” He took a step closer“So you’re just another desperate soul, begging people to buy useless crap. How dare you think you could ever be worthy of my daughter?”

Fredrick laughed behind him.

Elias kept his expression calm, even as the insults rained down. He had expected nothing less from Ryan and Chloe.

These were the kinds of people who felt entitled to treat others like dirt, just because they had money. It made him question how they could raise someone as incredible as Luna.

Chloe’s lip curled. “Luna, what is this? You brought this man into our home? Are you trying to embarrass us in front of your grandfather tonight?”

Luna’s fingers tightened into fists but she knew better than to show too much emotion. She had learned long ago to expect nothing less from her parents. Their arrogance was almost predictable at this point.

She opened her mouth to speak, but a voice interrupted her.

Tell you what, Rivers," Ryan said, stepping closer with a smirk that didn't reach his eyes. "I’m feeling generous today. How about this—I'll offer you a job at my company. A decent position, too.”

Elias raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t sure whether to laugh or get offended. “A job?” he repeated.

Ryan’s lips curled into a sneer. “Yes. A position as a security guard.” He paused for a moment.

“It’s better than whatever it is you’re doing now, right? You won’t need to do much. Just bow and nod like a dog to those higher up. You won’t even have to think. You can scrape by.”

Fredrick snorted behind him, clearly enjoying every second of it.

Elias glanced briefly at Luna. Her jaw was clenched, and her face was flushed with anger. She was fighting the urge to lash out.

"Enough! Both of you, just stop." Luna's eyes was flashing with anger. "What is it with you always thinking you can control every aspect of my life? Do you really think you have the right to decide who I’m with?

Chloe scoffed“We just want the best for you, Luna. And he isn’t it. He’s not even comparable to one strand of Fredrick’s hair. Fredrick is the heir to a company worth millions.

She paused for a second

"Do you even know who’s backing it? Umbratech Corporation. That company will be worth billions soon. And your ‘boyfriend’? He’s just a salesman. A replaceable name tag and a cheap tie.”

Elias’s eyes darkened. He gently moved Luna behind him with one hand

"Mr. and Mrs. West," he said coldly, "I have been nothing but respectful since I walked through your doors. But don’t confuse my silence with inadequacy."

He glanced at Luna briefly, then back.

"My job may not suit your taste—but it’s more than enough. To secure a future. To shield what’s mine. And to give Luna everything she could ever need."

Butterflies fluttered in Luna’s stomach as Elias gently defended her. He didn’t raise his voice. Didn’t break a sweat. Just spoke like a man who knew his worth.

But then the bastard spoke.

Fredrick scoffed loudly, slow-clapping like he’d just watched a school play. “Wow. That was touching. Really.” He stepped forward. “You should consider a career in motivational speaking. You’ve got the tone down—pity your job title doesn't match the speech.”

Elias didn’t move. His eyes didn’t even flicker.

Fredrick smirked and looked at Chloe and Ryan. “You know, I actually brought something tonight. Thought I’d show my appreciation.” He turned toward the car with a grin.

“Why don’t you all head inside? I’ll bring the gifts in. Something a little more valuable than empty words.”

Elias felt a flash of anger toward Fredrick. The guy had no idea who he was talking to, acting like his petty company meant anything to someone who could buy and sell him with a snap of his fingers.

He wondered how Fredrick would feel if he knew the truth—his monthly dividends were more than Fredrick’s entire net worth. It was laughable.

Chloe checked her watch, then scoffed. “It’s almost time for the birthday dinner anyway,” she muttered. “Let’s go, Luna.”

She dragged Luna inside, her hand gripping her daughter’s wrist. Ryan followed behind them. Fredrick smirked at Elias one last time, then headed to the car to fetch his precious gifts.

Elias stood still, staring at the gift bag he had gotten for Chloe and Ryan. It had been discarded carelessly during the confrontation, now sitting forgotten on the floor.

Elias bent down, picked up the small velvet bag, and walked into the villa.

The interior was the definition of wealth trying too hard—white marble floors, glass chandeliers everywhere. Everything sparkled, but it felt cold. Like a hotel lobby with no soul.

He stepped into the hall. Fredrick was already front and center, holding two sleek boxes

“For Mr. and Mrs. West,” he said, handing one to each parent. “A little something to show my appreciation.”

Ryan opened his first—his eyes lit up. “Blancpain?”

“Villeret,” Fredrick confirmed. “Limited edition. Custom engraved. Runs about a hundred grand.”

Chloe opened hers, lifting out a diamond-studded bracelet that caught the chandelier light and threw it in every direction.

She gasped, hand to chest. “This must’ve cost—”

"Roughly one-fifty,” Fredrick said, flashing his teeth. “Only the best for My girlfriend's family.”

Luna lingered a few steps away, arms crossed, jaw tight. “Elias also brought a gift,” she said, louder than before. “For both of you.”

Fredrick chuckled. “Oh? Do show us, Rivers. I’m dying to see how a salesman impresses a billionaire family?”

Elias remained quiet. He reached into the side of his coat, pulled out a slim box, dark and elegant. No brand label. Just clean design. .

Luna tensed. Her eyes flicked to the box, then back to his face. Her head gave the tiniest shake. A warning. She hadn’t expected him to really give it. Not after she only gave him ten grand.

But Elias ignored the signal. He stepped forward and extended the box toward the couple seated ahead of him.

Ryan looked at it once. Just once. Chloe didn’t even reach for it. She turned her head, lips pursed. “How thoughtful,” she muttered, without meaning it.

Before the gift could even change hands, the butler appeared at the archway.

“Dinner is served,” he announced.

Perfect timing.

Miranda's eyes blazed with fury. She took a step forward, heels clicking sharply against the marble floor."How dare you speak to me like that?" she hissed. "Do you even know who I am? My fiancé is Fredrick. Fredrick Whitmore. The heir to the most powerful family in Crewstwick City."Luna blinked slowly, then let out a short, sharp laugh."Fredrick? That bastard?" she said, voice laced with mockery. "You mean the same Fredrick who tried to hit on me few days ago? The one I rejected so hard he nearly choked on his own pride?"Miranda stiffened. “You wish. He wouldn’t touch you with a ten-foot pole.”“Right,” Luna said with a smirk. “That’s why kept forcing himself on me’ Showed up to my grandfather’s party dressed like royalty, arms full of gifts, hoping to win me over. Elias sighed, turning back to the quiet of the boutique, realizing that peace wasn’t something he could bargain for tonight. Not while she was still standing there.“Trying to pretend you belong, are you? Walking in like some prince when you’re nothing more than a gutter rat in borrowed clothes.” He kept his eyes fixed on the midnight-blue dress he was holding, pretending not to hear. But she pressed on.“Do you really think showing up in a place like this is going to make people forget who you are? Or who you aren’t?” Her lips curled in a cruel smile. “You look like someone who’s been scraping by on handouts.”Elias turned slowly, meeting her sharp, sneering gaze.Miranda stepped forward, heels clicking. “Honestly, I’m surprised they even let you in here. I mean, look at you. You couldn’t afford the cheapest thing in this store if you begged on the street.”She gestured around the boutique, here voice rising so other customers could hear. “You degrade this place just by breathing it

She just wanted to protect him—from Fredrick, from the vultures, from the whispers circling like blood in the water. But Elias had made up his mind. If he insisted on walking into the lion’s den, then she could do nothing except go with him.And at the very least, she thought, if he

Elias sat alone in his study, a quiet room tucked behind the east wing of his estate. A glass of untouched scotch rested near his elbow. He didn’t drink while working—just liked the look of it.The tablet in front of him displayed quarterly reports. Supply chain delays. And the usual chaos of numbers. He scrolled through it slowly. Then he picked up his phone and dialed.“Adams,” he said when the line clicked.A pause. Then the voice answered.“Sir. Good evening. Everything all right?”“Just needed an update,” Elias said, leaning back in his chair. “How’s the vendor reconciliation going?”Adams cleared his throat. “On it now, sir. I’ve been at the downtown office since morning. Still compiling the figures from East Asia’s procurement files. Should have it on your desk by tonight.”“Hm,” Elias said simply.Elias glanced at the corner of his screen—camera feed showed his private office was empty. Quiet.Few seconds of silence passed.“You’re at the office now?”“Yes, sir. Just wrappi

He leaned back in the booth like he owned the air in the room. His lips curled into smirk.“Fredrick Whitmore,The one and only” he said, voice rich with ego. “also the current reason your night just got interesting.”Arrogant. Effortlessly confident. Like the mere act of introducing himself was a favor to the world.Miranda’s eyes narrowed. “I’m only going to ask once,” she said coldly. “Did that piece of trash send you?”Her voice was sharp. She didn’t bother hiding her anger.Fredrick didn’t flinch. Instead, he stretched his arm out over the back of the booth, casually tilting his wrist. The Patek Philippe watch caught the light. He tapped it like he was checking the time—except it was clear he wanted her to notice. And she did.Her gaze dropped to the watch. Then the Montblanc pen. Then his cufflinks. Diamond-encrusted. Classy. Expensive. She leaned in slightly, the corners of her lips curving just enough to suggest interest. The anger hadn’t left her eyes, but it had cooled— repla

Miranda Crane walked into the reception of the restaurant with the sort of entitled walk only someone delusional about their worth could muster. She looked around, nose wrinkling in distaste. And only when the city’s better establishments had longer waitlists. Not that she belonged here. She told herself that every time she had to endure something so… beneath her. Miranda deserved marble floors, crystal chandeliers, imported champagne. Not this. She walked forward,—until her shoulder collided with something solid. There was a crash. Fredrick had played his hand well so far—hadn't pushed too hard, hadn't exposed his full intentions. But the evening was far from over, and he still had one more card to play. “Like I previously said,” he began smoothly, Adams will be arriving in the city tomorrow.”He paused before continuing. “He’s taking time out of his busy schedule to visit. We thought a banquet would be a fitting welcome for such an important guest.”Fredrick turned his focus to Harold, locking eyes with him as if gauging his reaction.“What do you think, sir?” Fredrick asked, “Perhaps you and your family would join us this evening? It would be good for Adams to meet everyone here.”Harold didn’t hesitate. “Of course. That sounds like a fine idea.” Fredrick’salmost smiled but he was careful not to let it show too much. His plan was falling into place just as he intended.Harold’s gaze shifted briefly to Elias. It was a brief moment, but Fredrick didn’t miss it. Harold had just looked at Elias like he was asses

Chloe’s jaw dropped. Ryan blinked rapidly, as if trying to process what he just heard. Even the butler froze mid-step, eyes fixed on the medal. The room went dead silent. No one had expected thisBut then Fredrick laughed. “It's just a souvenir. You can buy them online these days. Please. A salesman with a presidential honor? Do we look stupid?”He turned to Luna. “You believe this?”Luna didn’t answer. Her fingers clenched under the table. She stared at the badge. It looked real, but... she had only given him $10,000. How could he afford something like that? Elias was just a salesman. It didn’t make sense. Fredrick gave a dismissive wave. “Recently, the president issued a medal, yes. To the real ‘king of war,’ the CEO of Umbratech. But someone like you?” Fredrick laughed cruelly. “You’re just a salesman. How could you ever be the real king of war?” His words sent a ripple of disdain through the room. Fredrick looked at Elias as if the very idea of him possessing such a medal was la

Elias smiled. Not because anything was funny—but because Fredrick had already lost. He just didn’t know it yet. At this point, he didn’t even see Fredrick as a threat. Just a clown in an overpriced suit, performing for applause that never came.Fredrick hadn’t earned anything. Not the respect, not the girl, and definitely not Harold’s approval.Across the table, Luna’s patience snapped. “That’s enough,” she said, “You don’t get to talk down to him.”Fredrick’s smirk twitched. He turned his full attention to Elias. “Oh, I’m just getting started.”Elias leaned back, “Then start with this—what did you bring?”Fredrick straightened like he’d been waiting for the spotlight all night. “Glad you asked.”He gave a signal. Two servants entered, carrying a glass display case. Inside sat a green jade Buddha, polished to a shine.“Five hundred thousand dollars,” Fredrick announced. “Ming Dynasty. Certified antique. One of a kind.”Ryan clapped. Chloe gasped. They were all visibly shocked. Only
