1. The Ordinary Son-in-Law Has Returns

"Grandpa, that's not true! Xania couldn't have killed herself!" Xavier arrived at the Smith Townhouse. An apartment complex built in the centre of the city. Xavier tried to tell Grandpa Smith about his suspicions.

But when he saw that Grandpa Smith did not react, Xavier did not give up and he still tried hard to continue his words: "I am sure, someone must have set her up. We have to investigate this case, and how could you give the company that Xania ran and built to Janiska? That's not fair, I'm back and I'll take responsibility for my family's property!"

Grandfather Smith gave Xavier a sharp look, as the extended family gathered at Xavier's invitation.

"Xavier... Xavier... I thought you wouldn't come back and die on the battlefield. So the company is well suited to be run by Janiska. Do you know anything about the beauty industry? You're just a soldier who happened to be discharged because your general thought your skills were rather poor. You don't even have a title or a job, and you don't have anyone now that your sister and parents have gone to heaven. And you don't intend to follow them, do you?" Grandpa Smith said so cruelly that it pierced Xavier's heart.

"Grandpa, I'm your grandson too." Xavier stared at his grandfather in disbelief, as if he were being treated like the stranger he despised so much.

All the members of the family looked at him with pity.

"Xavier, you are indeed a Smith because you carry the Smith family title. But you should know that you left Scotland to pursue your dream of becoming a soldier. You have abandoned and neglected your family here. How can a son not come on the day his parents die? Even when your twin committed suicide, you didn't show any concern. Do you still want to be considered Smith's family? The news about you is spreading, you're considered so bad". Peter Smith even took Xavier to task.

Janiska went over to Xavier, showing him her delicate fingers with a wry smile. "I think Grandpa wants you out of the Smith family."

Xavier's hands clenched into fists behind his back, he looked at each of the Smith family members present. Tonight, Xavier swore he would never ask them for help, even if he found the culprits who had committed the crime against Xania, he would finish them off. He would show no mercy.

"Get lost Xavier, you're just like your father. Being here will be a nuisance for Grandpa," Grandpa Smith said for the last time before Xavier left without saying a word.

"Hahaha, look at him going and giving up. I don't know how he'll live, maybe he'll go to his in-laws and depend on his wife." Peter laughed loudly, his voice still clearly audible in Xavier's ears.

All these insults were not returned by Xavier at all. He still tried to hold back and let them do as they pleased. As he reached the edge of the motorway and left the townhouse complex, a black Mercedes-Benz pulled up in front of Xavier. The man scanned the surrounding streets to make sure no one saw him get into the car.

Once seated beside Leo, who was driving the car, Xavier leaned his head back and closed his eyes.

Giving Xavier a look, Leo asked. "Did they treat you badly, boss?"

Xavier didn't answer Leo's question immediately, he just sighed tiredly and then looked out of the window to take in the scenery.

"Take me to my wife, Leo."

Leo realised that his boss couldn't tell a story, so he didn't ask any more questions. He just nodded briefly and showed his respect. Leo knew Xavier very well, he never felt superior and always taught his special forces to be humble, no matter who they were. He believed that on the battlefield they should fight together to protect their brothers and their country.

For the first time in years, Xavier came back to this house. Xavier deliberately parked his car a short distance from Savana's house, he didn't want his wife's family to know that he was driving a luxury car. Xavier didn't even bring anything with him, perhaps he would be criticised by Savana's family afterwards.

Xavier knocked on the door of the teak house while he waited for the owner to come out, he looked around this house which was already better maintained. As soon as the door opened, Xavier looked at his father-in-law.

"Xavier Smith? Is that you? Is it really you?" Joseph Cooper looked at Xavier in surprise, both of his eyeballs widening.

"Yes, Father, I'm back." Xavier smiled broadly and the two exchanged hugs.

"Father, who's here?"

Hearing his daughter's voice, Joseph broke the embrace and told her to come in.

"I've brought a special guest," Dad said as he pulled Xavier inside until he was facing Savana.

Naturally, Savana was quite surprised. Savana still remembered the look on her husband's face. This person in front of her felt very strange and distant because they had never communicated, not even made love. Savana was so shocked she could only stand still.

"Savana, Daddy, who's coming?"

As for Mom, she had once hoped that the news of Xavier's death would make Savana divorce him and marry another man who would make her happier. But Savana was a very loyal woman, she hardly ever hung out or played to enjoy her life. Savana always worked hard, came home on time, ate regularly, but as a mother, Anggie knew exactly how Savana felt. She just covered it up. Now that her husband had just returned, Anggie wanted to scold him for making his wife suffer and be lonely. Anggie wondered why Xavier never sent any messages to his wife, not even money to support her.

As dinner was about to start, Joseph got them all to sit around the table and eat together. The atmosphere around the table seemed to be very quiet because they really wanted to hear Xavier's explanation.

"Sorry to keep you waiting, Savana." Xavier opened his mouth after swallowing his food, looking straight at Savana who was sitting in front of him.

"I'm sorry dad, mum, for making you angry, upset and disappointed. There are many things I can't tell you. But I really came back for you, for Savana." Xavier smiled sincerely and reached out for Savana's hand on the dining table.

"What is your position in the military? Did you come back with any wealth? After hearing the news about your family, we were worried. But the news about you sounds so bad, it's already spread everywhere," Anggie said, keeping her cheeky expression.

"Mum..." Savana looked at her mother, she didn't want a fight here. Although she did want to know a lot about her husband.

Xavier answered calmly. He looked at Savana who was looking at him, then at Anggie. "As you know, I'm just an ordinary soldier with no accomplishments. I may not have a job yet and I don't know what my future goals are. But if you believe that I will bring happiness to your daughter, that happiness does not always come from wealth and riches."

Joseph, sitting next to Xavier, cleared his throat, distracting Anggie and her two children. "Xavier, it would be better for you to get a job that pays, so that people don't underestimate you. I want my daughter to have the happiness she deserves, she's been waiting for you and loyal to you, so I hope you won't waste her when you return. Of course, if you have nothing to be proud of as Savana's husband, I'll take strict measures to divorce you. Possessions and wealth are not the main thing to achieve happiness, but you have to be realistic about living in this world, everything we want has a price. Joseph explained to Xavier in a language that was easy to accept, even his words were more pleasant to listen to than the questions of his mother-in-law, who seemed not to care about his life. So Xavier could still accept criticism from his daddy-in-law.

"Okay, Daddy."

Joseph patted Xavier's shoulder. "A month is enough time, isn't it? My wife will be furious if you don't earn and live with us."

"I'll try to do better, don't worry." Xavier replied firmly, because for him it was not yet time to show the world who Xavier really was.
