Ash fell before sound returned. Caster stood alone in the lower vault corridor as the last ward dimmed from amber to gray.

The stone floor was clean a breath ago. Now a thin layer of ash drifted down, slow and steady, like snow that refused to melt. It did not fall straight.

It slid sideways, then up, then settled into sharp edges along the seams of the stone. He did not move. The corridor lamps flickered once. They steadied. The air tasted dry.

Caster knelt and reached out with two fingers.

Caster turned around, preparing to walk out of the tent and disappear back into the chaos of the camp. But as he turned, a shadow fell across his path. Standing in the entrance of the large canvas tent was a man. He did not wear the gray armor of a soldier. He did not wear the blue robes of a healer. He wore a long, perfectly clean, sharp black coat. His silver hair was slicked back smoothly. His pale gray eyes looked at Caster with absolute, freezing intelligence. It was Inquisitor Graves. The highest, smartest, most dangerous spy of the Glassview High Council. The man who had interrogated Caster in the freezing underground cells just a few days ago. Graves stood in the doorway. He slowly raised his pale hands. He clapped three times. The slow, mocking sound echoed loudly in the quiet tent. "A miracle," Inquisitor Graves said softly. His voice was smooth as silk, but it carried a deadly, hidden blade. "A true, beautiful miracle."Caster froze. His heart hammered against his bro

Caster ignored her. He pulled the glowing lavender crystal out of his pocket. The soft, silver-purple light illuminated the dark, muddy tent. The healers gasped. They had never seen magic like this before. It did not look like Tower magic. It looked incredibly old and incredibly pure. "Hold him still," Caster ordered the healers. The head healer was too shocked to argue. She saw the absolute, unbreakable authority in Caster’s gray eyes. She rushed forward and held the screaming boy’s shoulders down against the crate. Caster looked at the terrible, mutated red bone growing out of Toby’s chest. He gently pressed the glowing lavender crystal directly against the red bone. The sound was not a violent explosion. It was the sound of a massive, heavy breath being sucked inward. The moment the lavender crystal touched the mutation, the red magic reacted in pure terror. The screaming red energy tried to run away. It tried to dig deeper into the boy’s body. But the crystal was a perfect,

Caster pulled his brown hood low over his face. He gripped his wooden walking stick. He walked casually toward the trucks, acting like a busy mechanic looking for tools. When he was ten feet away from the guards, Caster stopped. He reached down into the mud. He picked up a small, smooth stone. He looked at a truck parked right behind the guards. The truck was full of spare iron tires and heavy metal chains. Caster flicked his wrist. He threw the small stone as hard as he could. The stone flew through the air and hit the metal side of the truck. The sound was sharp and loud. "What was that?" one of the black-armored guards shouted. He raised his glowing purple rifle. "Check the truck!" the squad leader ordered. "It might be a Crimson spy!"All four guards turned their backs on the lead boxes. They ran toward the truck, pointing their guns into the shadows. It was a very old, very simple trick. But in the middle of a terrifying, noisy war, simple tricks worked perfectly. Caster

The sky above the Rift Plains was a nightmare of torn colors. Half of the sky was a bruised, sick purple. The other half was a screaming, violent red. Down in the mud, the Glassview medical tent was a place of pure horror. It was a massive tent made of thick gray canvas, set up a mile behind the front lines. But the front lines were falling apart. The Crimson Alliance was pushing forward with their terrible red energy weapons. The walking mountain of iron, the Crimson Engine, fired its heavy cannons again and again. Inside the medical tent, there were no beds left. The ground was covered in wet, freezing mud. Hundreds of young Glassview soldiers lay in the dirt. They were bleeding. They were crying. They were begging for their mothers. Caster Spellbound walked through the mud. He carried a heavy wooden bucket of dirty water. He was supposed to be a simple mechanic named Cass. He wore a torn, dirty gray jacket. His face was covered in dark soot. He had tried to walk straight towar

"The dark ash," Sikoa realized. "Caster said the dark ash is pure entropy. It eats heat. It eats magic. It is freezing cold."Sikoa ran to the corner of the cave. She unlocked the heavy lead box. She pulled out three glowing, pulsing purple crystals. The sick, beautiful light cast strange shadows on her scarred face. She carried the freezing crystals back to the table. She set them down next to the red blueprints. "What are those?" Master Toris asked, shivering as the temperature in the cave dropped. "This is the poison that almost destroyed the world," Sikoa said grimly. "And we are going to feed it to the monster."She looked at the young woman with curly hair. "I need you to build me a bomb," Sikoa ordered. "I need you to take these purple crystals and put them inside a heavy iron casing. But I do not want them to explode outward."Sikoa placed her hands on the table and leaned forward. "I want the bomb to explode inward," Sikoa instructed. "When I throw this into the exhaust

Sikoa reached to her belt. She pulled out her sharpest, heaviest steel dagger. She raised the dagger high into the air. Sikoa drove the steel blade directly into the center of the wooden table. The blade buried itself deep into the wood. The loud noise shocked everyone. The screaming stopped. The running stopped. Thirty terrified mages turned to look at the muddy, angry woman with the eye-patch. "Nobody is packing any bags!" Sikoa roared. Her rough, harsh voice echoed off the cave walls like a cracking whip. "You cannot give us orders, thief!" an older man with a gray beard snapped. His name was Master Toris. He used to be a very important earth-mage. "We are scholars of the Guilds! You are just a street rat! The world is ending, and we are leaving!"Sikoa pulled her dagger out of the table. She pointed the sharp tip directly at Master Toris’s nose. "The world is ending because cowards like you run away!" Sikoa shouted. She stepped toward the old man. She did not look like a stre
