Chapter 19: Cargo and Conscience
"If you sneeze one more cloud of pink glitter, Aether, I am going to tie you to a ballast stone and drop you straight into the harbor," Calista hissed, her whisper razor-sharp as she pressed her back against the damp, salt-crusted wall of the timber warehouse.
"That is a remarkably harsh penalty for a physiological malfunction entirely caused by your estate's exploding magical artifacts," Aether replied, his voice a breathy whisper that fluttered past his lips like dry leaves. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. "Besides, my sparkling disposition is the only reason those guards out by the main crane are currently distracted by a sneezing fit."
"They are distracted because you managed to weaponize your own structural collapse," Nyxara muttered from the other side of the loading bay door, her silver daggers already sliding silently into her palms with a faint, oiled click. "Stop bickering, both of you. The patrol boat is cutting its engine at the slipway. Move."
Calista didn't hesitate. Grasping Aether firmly by his good arm to steady his weightless, floating momentum, she drew her rapier with her free hand, the blade instantly humming with a pale, subdued golden light. The Sinking Docks at midnight were a labyrinth of rotting timber, towering shipping containers, and deep, brackish water that lapped greedily against the wooden pylons below. Master Vane needed the Luminescent Salt from these specific crates to stabilize Aether’s volatile violet veins, and Calista had no intention of letting a few armed watchmen stand between them and a cure—even if her moral code strictly prohibited lethal force.
"Remember the rules," Calista muttered to Aether as three dock guards rounded the corner of the crate aisle, heavy iron pikes raised and lanterns swinging in the foggy gloom. "No killing. Blunt-force hilt strikes only. Protect your dissolving side."
"My favorite kind of tactical planning," Aether sighed, his eyes catching the light of the approaching lanterns and glittering with reckless humor. "Violence with an ethical warranty."
"Who goes there?" the lead guard shouted, lowering his pike and squinting through the thick harbor fog. "This is private property of the Gilded Regulators' shipping syndicate. Step into the light or we—"
He didn't finish the threat. Calista moved with the lethal, fluid grace of her former military training, closing the distance in a single heartbeat. As the guard thrust his pike forward, she sidestepped the rusty point, deflected the shaft with the flat of her rapier, and brought the heavy pommel of her sword down hard against the side of his iron helm. The man crumpled instantly without a sound, sliding sideways into a pile of hemp rope.
"One down," Aether whispered, clapping his hands together softly in mock applause. "Exquisite form, Captain. Truly a masterclass in aggressive municipal negotiation."
The remaining two guards panicked, lunging forward with desperate cries, but Nyxara dropped from the crossbeams above them like a falling shadow. With two swift, silent strikes of her dagger hilts to the back of their necks, both guards dropped to the wooden floorboards, unconscious before they even hit the ground.
"Less talking, more lifting," Nyxara commanded, kicking one of the fallen guards aside with the toe of her boot and scanning the crate labels by the flickering lantern light. "Here it is. Section Four. Crates thirty-two through thirty-five. Luminescent Salt, refined from the upper peaks."
Calista rushed to the designated crate, her muscles straining as she wedged the tip of her rapier under the iron-banded lid and forced it upward with a sharp crack of splintering pine. Inside, nestled in protective layers of dark velvet, sat several heavy jars filled with a coarse, iridescent crystal salt that pulsed with a faint, steady blue luminescence.
"Vane wasn't lying," Calista breathed, reaching in to lift one of the heavy glass jars out into the dim light. "This is high-grade mineral ether. It’ll cost a fortune on the black market."
"Which is precisely why we are stealing it instead of buying it," Aether pointed out, stepping closer to peer into the open crate. As he leaned over, a sudden shiver wracked his frame, and another bright puff of pink and green dust burst from his chest, drifting lazily down over the exposed jars of salt like enchanted snow.
"Aether!" Calista hissed, snatching his arm back just as a low whistle echoed from the slipway outside. "You just dusted half the inventory!"
"It adds character," Aether protested weakly, his face turning an alarming shade of pale translucent grey. "And more importantly... I think I'm about to sneeze again."
"If you sneeze, we are dead," Nyxara warned, her daggers spinning effortlessly in her grip as she peered around the corner of the warehouse door. "A patrol boat just pulled up to the pier. The captain is stepping onto the boardwalk right now."
"Hide the jars!" Calista ordered, shoving the lid back onto the crate with frantic speed and sweeping the stray dust off the floor with her boot. "Aether, stop glowing so brightly, for the love of the gods!"
"I am regulating my luminescence as fast as humanly—or semi-humanly—possible!" Aether wheezed, stumbling backward and accidentally leaning his entire weight against a stack of imported spice sacks. The sacks shifted with a soft, ominous rustle, threatening to spill yellow turmeric and red paprika all over the damp wooden floorboards.
"If you cause an avalanche of curry powder, I will leave you here for the Regulators," Nyxara muttered, darting toward the shadows near the back loading door. "Grab the salt jar you already pulled out, Calista. We have to move. Now."
Heavy boots echoed on the outer boardwalk, accompanied by the gruff voice of a senior inspector demanding a status report from the night watch. Calista grabbed the heavy glass jar of Luminescent Salt, shoving it deep into her canvas traveling bag with one hand while keeping a vice-like grip on Aether's good wrist with the other.
"Through the back delivery chute," Calista whispered, pointing toward a narrow wooden hatch near the floor that led out toward the dark, narrow alleyway behind the warehouses.
"Oh, excellent," Aether groaned, looking at the tiny square opening with profound skepticism. "Nothing quite like squeezing my partially non-existent anatomy through a hole meant for discarded crates."
"Move," Calista urged, shoving him gently toward the hatch just as the main front doors of the warehouse swung open with a loud, protesting screech, flooding the interior with the harsh, yellow light of several heavy storm lanterns.
"Hey! Who's in the salt aisle?" a harsh voice barked from the front entrance, followed by the metallic clank of drawn sabers.
Nyxara ducked through the delivery hatch first, disappearing into the black alleyway with feline agility. Calista hauled Aether down by his bound wrist, ignoring his muffled complaints as his dissolving shoulder caught against the wooden frame of the chute, leaving a faint streak of glowing orange mist on the timber. With a final, desperate heave, she pulled him through into the cool, damp night air just as a barrage of crossbow bolts splintered the wall directly above their heads.
"Run," Calista commanded, pulling Aether to his feet and sprinting down the dark, twisting alleyway as the shouts of angry guards echoed behind them in the damp dockside air.
"You know," Aether panted, his footsteps feeling strangely weightless and uneven as they wove through the maze of rotting fish crates and abandoned pushcarts, "our midnight excursions are becoming entirely too predictable. Next time, can we just rob a bakery?"
"Shut up and run, Aether," Calista breathed, her solar divinity humming fiercely beneath her skin as she dragged him deeper into the safety of the shadows, the j
ar of Luminescent Salt clanking safely inside her bag.

Chapter 20: The Salt DraughtThe workshop smelled intensely of scorched vinegar, wet parchment, and a variety of dried herbs that had clearly passed their expiration date several decades ago. Master Vane stood over a sputtering brass burner, his hair standing on end as though he had recently experienced a minor electrical discharge, glaring at the three intruders with rheumy, bloodshot eyes."You brought it?" Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. Do you have it?"Calista hoisted the heavy canvas sack onto a rickety wooden table, the contents clinking together with a dense, muted weight. "We have it. Now stop shouting and look at him. His left shoulder has been flickering like a dying tallow candle for the past

The Sinking Docks at Midnight
Chapter 18: The Sinking Docks at Midnight"I am telling you, Calista, my silhouette is an absolute necessity for social engineering," Aether wheezed, his voice carrying the airy, rattling cadence of a man whose lungs were currently composed of ninety percent decorative dust. "If we send you alone, you’ll just interrogate the dock master about his tax compliance. If we send Nyxara, she’ll murder him before he can tell us where the salt crates are. Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. You are not negotiating with dock thieves while half of your body looks like an exploded hourglass."Nyxara, walking two paces ahead with her
Master Vane’s Workshop
Chapter 17: Master Vane’s WorkshopThe heavy wooden door of Master Vane’s establishment did not have a bell; it had a rusted iron knocker shaped like a scowling gargoyle that looked as though it wanted to bite off whoever was foolish enough to touch it.Nyxara didn't bother knocking. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged
The Broker’s Toll
Chapter 16: The Broker’s Toll"If the river-rats ask," Nyxara whispered, her daggers vanishing back into their leather sheaths with a soft, practiced click, "you are two terminally ill nobles traveling to a country sanatorium. If they look at your arm, Aether, try not to disintegrate until we are past the toll-gate.""I make no promises regarding my structural integrity," Aether wheezed, leaning heavily against Calista’s side as they stepped out of the damp limestone crawlspace and onto the rotting wooden planks of the lower canal. The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. Her left wrist was bound to his by the shimmering, infuriatingly indestructible silk sash that refused to tear, burn, or rot."Quiet," Calista hissed under her
The Alchemist of the Cisterns
Chapter 15: The Alchemist of the CisternsNyxara didn’t turn around when the heavy oak door groaned against its iron hinges, her silver daggers moving with a rhythmic, rasping hiss against the whetstone. The damp air of the abandoned wine cellar clung to her leather coat like a second skin, smelling heavily of vinegar, wet stone, and old ambition."You're making too much noise," Nyxara muttered, her dark eyes flicking sideways toward the huddled figures on the floor. "The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe. He was slumped sideways against Calista’s shoulder, his entire left arm reduced to a semi-transparent haze of amber mist that flickered erratically with every pulse of his heartbeat. "It was an artistic expression of respiratory distr
