Chapter 11: The Residue of Sunlight

"Take it!" Calista shouted, her voice cracking as she forced another wave of brilliant, blazing solar divinity from her palms directly into Aether’s chest.

Instead of anchoring him, the raw holy light violently reacted with his shifting molecular state, causing his amber mist to hiss and crystallize with a sharp, glass-like crackle. Aether gasped, his semi-transparent features twisting in sudden, acute agony as jagged orange crystals formed across his collarbone before instantly shattering back into glowing dust.

"Stop—" Aether wheezed, his voice carrying the eerie, hollow resonance of a wind tunnel. "You’re making me into a wind chime. It’s a very painful aesthetic."

"Shut up and let me fix this!" Calista’s hands hovered frantically over his shoulders, terrified to touch him again yet equally terrified to pull away. Her silver divinity bled uselessly into the empty air between them, illuminating the floating, microscopic amber particles that used to be a man. "Why is it crystallizing? I’ve bound divine wounds before! This shouldn't be happening!"

"Because you're trying to staple sunlight to a ghost," a dry, mocking voice cut through the ozone-heavy gloom from the edge of the ruined ballroom.

Calista spun around instantly, her right hand dropping to the pommel of her rapier with military precision, the blade hissing half an inch out of its scabbard in a flash of cold silver.

Emerging from the jagged shadows of the collapsed vaulted ceiling, Nyxara stepped over a slab of scorched marble. The assassin’s daggers were already sheathed at her hips, her dark leathers dusted with white soot, her expression a masterclass in cynical boredom.

"Keep your little silver firecrackers in your trousers, Captain," Nyxara said, nodding toward Aether’s disintegrating form with casual indifference. "He isn't dying."

"He is literally coming apart at the seams!" Calista snarled, stepping protectively in front of Aether’s flickering silhouette, her rapier pointed straight at Nyxara’s throat. "Explain yourself right now, or I will run you through before you can take another breath."

"Put the toothpick down," Nyxara sighed, rolling her eyes and walking right up to the tip of Calista’s blade without an ounce of fear. "If you kill me, you lose the only person in this ruined palace who knows what a density shift looks like. He didn't die when the artifact blew. He just bottomed out. Shifting to a lower density. It’s what happens when a walking magic battery gets overcharged and drops the core."

Calista glanced back over her shoulder. Aether was currently staring at his right hand, which had completely vanished, leaving only an empty space where his fingers should have been.

"She’s actually right, you know," Aether’s voice drifted over, sounding faint and terribly distant, though a weak, crooked smile still hovered where his face ought to be. "Though I take mild exception to being called a battery. I prefer 'energetic masterpiece.' And honestly, Calista, your interior design choices need work. This rubble really clashes with my new, minimalist aesthetic."

Calista stared at him, her chest heaving, a fierce mixture of overwhelming relief and homicidal fury warring behind her eyes. "You think this is funny? You are half-vapor!"

"I think," Aether replied, floating an inch off the scorched floorboards before dropping back down with a clumsy stumble, "that if the Gilded Regulators don't show up in the next two minutes to arrest us for blowing up the aristocracy's favorite ballroom, we’re going to have plenty of time to discuss my new silhouette over a very stiff drink."

"He’s got a point," Nyxara said, her ears twitching as the faint, rhythmic sound of heavy boots echoing up the grand marble staircase began to pierce the lower levels of the estate. "The city guard heard that little light-show you two put on. If we don't move right now, you won't have to worry about his density dropping, because you'll both be swinging from the gallows by morning."

Calista’s jaw tightened. She sheathed her rapier with a sharp click, her solar divinity flaring once more as she grabbed Aether’s remaining solid arm to haul him upright. "Can you walk?"

"Walk? Darling, I can barely remember what having legs feels like," Aether groaned playfully, leaning heavily against her side as his left shoulder flickered into a bright cluster of orange sparks. "Fortunately, leaning on a gorgeous, highly decorated military officer has always been high on my bucket list."

"Keep talking and I'll drop you," Calista snapped, though she adjusted her grip to support his weight more securely.

"Lead the way, shadow-girl," Aether called out to Nyxara as the sound of boots grew dangerously closer down the corridor. "Try to find us a route with good lighting. I want my new transparent

phase to be properly appreciated."

Chapter 20: The Salt DraughtThe workshop smelled intensely of scorched vinegar, wet parchment, and a variety of dried herbs that had clearly passed their expiration date several decades ago. Master Vane stood over a sputtering brass burner, his hair standing on end as though he had recently experienced a minor electrical discharge, glaring at the three intruders with rheumy, bloodshot eyes."You brought it?" Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. Do you have it?"Calista hoisted the heavy canvas sack onto a rickety wooden table, the contents clinking together with a dense, muted weight. "We have it. Now stop shouting and look at him. His left shoulder has been flickering like a dying tallow candle for the past

He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. "Besides, my sparkling disposition is the only reason those guards out by the main crane are currently distracted by a sneezing fit.""They are distracted because you managed to weaponize your own structural collapse," Nyxara muttered from the other side of the loading bay door, he

"If we send you alone, you’ll just interrogate the dock master about his tax compliance. If we send Nyxara, she’ll murder him before he can tell us where the salt crates are. Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. You are not negotiating with dock thieves while half of your body looks like an exploded hourglass."Nyxara, walking two paces ahead with her

Chapter 17: Master Vane’s WorkshopThe heavy wooden door of Master Vane’s establishment did not have a bell; it had a rusted iron knocker shaped like a scowling gargoyle that looked as though it wanted to bite off whoever was foolish enough to touch it.Nyxara didn't bother knocking. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged

If they look at your arm, Aether, try not to disintegrate until we are past the toll-gate.""I make no promises regarding my structural integrity," Aether wheezed, leaning heavily against Calista’s side as they stepped out of the damp limestone crawlspace and onto the rotting wooden planks of the lower canal. The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. Her left wrist was bound to his by the shimmering, infuriatingly indestructible silk sash that refused to tear, burn, or rot."Quiet," Calista hissed under her

  • The Alchemist of the Cisterns

Chapter 15: The Alchemist of the CisternsNyxara didn’t turn around when the heavy oak door groaned against its iron hinges, her silver daggers moving with a rhythmic, rasping hiss against the whetstone. The damp air of the abandoned wine cellar clung to her leather coat like a second skin, smelling heavily of vinegar, wet stone, and old ambition."You're making too much noise," Nyxara muttered, her dark eyes flicking sideways toward the huddled figures on the floor. "The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe. He was slumped sideways against Calista’s shoulder, his entire left arm reduced to a semi-transparent haze of amber mist that flickered erratically with every pulse of his heartbeat. "It was an artistic expression of respiratory distr
