Chapter 10: The Awakening of the Forbidden Vortex

"Aether! Stay with me! Look at me!" Calista’s voice was a ragged edge, slicing through the eerie silence that followed the artifact’s destruction. She pulled him closer, but her arms felt empty, as if she were embracing a column of warm, flickering sunlight instead of a man.

"I’m looking, I’m looking," Aether whispered. His golden eyes were the only part of him that still looked solid, floating in a face that was quickly turning into amber mist. "You’re really pretty when you’re terrified, you know? It’s a very strong look. High fashion."

"Stop joking! You’re literally turning into sparkles!" Calista’s hands shook as she pressed them against his chest. Her silver divinity flared, leaking out of her skin in jagged, desperate pulses. "Why isn't it working? Why can't I give you my energy?"

"Because there’s no bucket to catch the water, darling," Aether gasped, a faint, translucent smile playing on his lips. "I’m all empty space. No core, remember?"

"I don't care! Take it anyway! Take everything I have!"

She let out a sob, and as her tears fell onto his transparent chest, they didn't just roll off. They sparked. The droplets turned into pure, blinding silver embers that sizzled against his fading form.

"Whoa," Aether breathed, his gaze dropping to their wrists. "Uh, Calista? I think we might have a minor problem. Or a major one. I’m not great with scale today."

The pink handcuffs between them didn't just rattle; they screamed. The metal began to glow, shifting from a soft bubblegum pink to a deep, bruising violet. The links of the chain grew thick, vibrating with a frequency that made the stage beneath them crack.

"What is that?" Calista asked, her voice trembling. "What’s happening to the cuffs?"

"I think your sad magic and my messy nothingness are having a bit of a disagreement," Aether said, his form flickering like a dying candle. "The chain... it’s trying to bridge the gap."

Suddenly, the air in the ballroom vanished. A vacuum formed around them, dragging scraps of silk, debris, and shattered glass toward their joined wrists.

"The vault!" a voice screamed from the entrance. "Get back! Everyone get back!"

Dorian Wicaksana stood by the heavy iron doors, his face drained of color as he watched the space around Aether and Calista begin to warp.

"Is that a rift?" Evren Satyanegara shouted, pushing his way past the fleeing guests, his enforcer’s mark glowing on his brow. "What did they do?"

"They’re overloading the binding!" Dorian yelled back, shielding his eyes. "The shackle can’t handle the spiritual resonance between a God’s collapse and a Goddess’s grief! It’s creating a feedback loop!"

"Shut it down, Evren!"

"I can't get close! The gravity is inside-out!"

The violet light between Aether and Calista suddenly exploded upward. It wasn't just a flash; it was a vertical spear of energy that tore through the starlight-woven ceiling of the manor, punching a hole straight into the sky.

"Calista, let go!" Aether yelled, though his voice was barely a hum now. "You have to pull away! The vortex is going to eat you too!"

"Never!" Calista roared, her silver hair whipping wildly in the supernatural wind. "If you’re going into the void, I’m going with you! I’m not losing you again!"

"You didn't lose me the first time!" Aether tried to sound indignant, though his eyes were wide with fear. "I was just... on a break! Seriously, Calista, your wrist is going to snap!"

"Let it snap!"

"This is insane!" Cassian Jayendra’s voice cut through the roar of the wind. He was standing on the far balcony, clutching the railing with white-knuckled force. "It wasn't supposed to do this! The Shackles were meant to drain them, not ignite the atmosphere!"

"Your plan is gone, Cassian!" Oriana Baskara shouted from the shadows below, her waitress uniform torn as she clung to a marble pillar. "Look at the sky! You’ve killed us all!"

"I didn't do this!" Cassian screamed back, looking genuinely terrified. "They’re doing it! Their compatibility is off the charts! It’s making a resonance vortex!"

High above the manor, the night sky was no longer black. It had turned a bruised, swirling shade of neon pink and deep indigo. Thick, roiling clouds of magical smog expanded outward, visible from every corner of the celestial city.

Theron Arkapura, standing far out in the gardens, stared up at the swirling heavens, his golden armor reflecting the chaotic violet light.

"My sun..." Theron whispered, for once looking completely un-heroic. "It’s being choked out. What kind of monster did they awaken in there?"

"It’s not a monster, you golden idiot!" Sylvan Daneswara yelled, running past him with a crate of emergency potions. "It’s a merger! They’re combining! If we don't find shelter, we’re all going to be turned into glitter and justice!"

"Shelter where?" Evelina Candrani shouted, her dual-bladed glaive held ready. "The whole sector is being pulled in!"

"Underground!" Nyxara Pusparani appeared from the shadows, her eyes locked on the manor’s crumbling silhouette. "Move! The epicenter is going to collapse in thirty seconds!"

"We can't leave them!" Amaris Kartikasari cried out from beside her sister Selene. "The guests... the manor!"

"The manor is gone, Amaris!" Selene yelled, her lunar light forming a temporary shield over a group of crying mortals. "Save who you can! Go!"

Back on the stage, the world was nothing but noise and violet light.

"Aether!" Calista screamed, her face pressed against the empty space where his chest used to be. "I can't feel my hand anymore!"

"That’s probably because it’s becoming part of the sky!" Aether yelled back. He was almost entirely gone now, just a shimmering golden outline within the center of the violet storm. "Hey, Calista?"

"What? What is it?"

"I think... I think I figured out the punchline," he whispered.

"You are not allowed to make a joke right now! You are absolutely not allowed!"

"It’s a good one, though..." he trailed off, his golden eyes flickering.

Suddenly, the vortex tripled in size. The stage beneath them simply ceased to exist, ground into atoms by the raw power of the chain.

"Calista, listen to me," Aether’s voice was suddenly clear, sounding inside her head instead of through her ears. "Hold on tight. Whatever happens next... keep the rhythm."

"Aether, no!"

"One, two, step, darling," he murmured.

With a deafening crack that echoed like the breaking of a world, the violet pillar of light contracted inward for one heartbeat before exploding outward in a silent, blinding wave of pure aesthetic chaos.

The pressure was immense. Calista felt her ribs groan under the force of the magical collapse, her lungs refusing to take in the ozone-heavy air. She squeezed her eyes shut, her fingers locked onto the invisible tether between them, refusing to yield even as her body felt like it was being pulled through a needle's eye.

She couldn't see the city anymore. She couldn't see the terrified faces of the other gods or the smoking ruins of the manor. There was only the feeling of his presence—jagged, chaotic, and bright—wrapping around her like a shield.

Then, the sound came.

It wasn't the roar of the wind or the scream of the vortex. It was a sound that came from above the sky, deeper than the earth, vibrating through the very fabric of reality itself. It was a voice that didn't use words but made the meaning known through the sheer weight of its tone.

"The forbidden union has awakened."

The ground beneath them didn't just fall away; it vanished.

"What's happening?" Calista tried to shout, but her voice was lost in the amber glow that suddenly swallowed her.

"We’re going up," Aether replied, his voice sounding stronger, richer than it had in days.

As the light became total, the last thing Calista felt was a warm, solid hand—real flesh and bone—intertwin

ing with her own, right where the violet chain had once been.

"Ready for Chapter Eleven?" he whispered.

Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. Do you have it?"Calista hoisted the heavy canvas sack onto a rickety wooden table, the contents clinking together with a dense, muted weight. "We have it. Now stop shouting and look at him. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. "Besides, my sparkling disposition is the only reason those guards out by the main crane are currently distracted by a sneezing fit.""They are distracted because you managed to weaponize your own structural collapse," Nyxara muttered from the other side of the loading bay door, he

Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. You are not negotiating with dock thieves while half of your body looks like an exploded hourglass."Nyxara, walking two paces ahead with her

She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged

The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. Her left wrist was bound to his by the shimmering, infuriatingly indestructible silk sash that refused to tear, burn, or rot."Quiet," Calista hissed under her

"The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe. He was slumped sideways against Calista’s shoulder, his entire left arm reduced to a semi-transparent haze of amber mist that flickered erratically with every pulse of his heartbeat. "It was an artistic expression of respiratory distr
