Chapter 5: A Trap of Gravity and Vanity

"Oof! Okay, that landing was a solid zero out of ten," Aether groaned, his face pressed flat against cold, glowing metal. "My ribs are officially lodging a formal complaint with the celestial bureau."

"Get your knee out of my side, Aether," Calista hissed, her voice muffled against his shoulder.

"I'd love to, really, but my left hand is currently magnetized to this wall, which means you are also magnetized to this wall."

The dark portal snapped shut behind them with a metallic hiss, leaving them trapped inside a cylindrical cage of pulsing, crimson light. Their chained wrists were clamped tight against the glowing vertical bars, locked by a crackling magnetic field.

"Great. Just great," Calista muttered, trying to pull her arm back. The pink chain rattled, but the red energy hummed louder, locking them in place. "Runic containment. Cassian really went all out."

"Oh, look, he even got us a room with a view," Aether said, nodding toward the shadowed chamber outside the cage. "Though the decor is a bit too 'mad scientist' for my taste. Very cliché."

"Ah, you're awake. I was worried the transit might have scrambled your delicate brains," Cassian's voice echoed from the shadows. He stepped into the light, tapping his brass device with a smug smile.

"Cassian," Calista spat, her eyes glowing with suppressed fury. "Release us. You are violating three major celestial treaties and at least five local municipal codes."

"Oh, municipal codes! I'm shaking," Cassian laughed, stepping up to the cage. "You always were a stickler for the rules, Calista. Too bad the High Court doesn't care about you anymore."

"They'll come for us," she said.

"No, they won't," Cassian sneered. "They think you're chasing a rogue ex-god. If you disappear, they'll just assume you failed. Meanwhile, your combined divine essence is going to power my new dimensional gateway. An active Goddess of Justice and a fallen God of Aesthetics... the polarization of your energies is the perfect fuel."

"Fuel?" Aether chimed in, trying to sound casual despite the cold sweat on his forehead. "First of all, rude. Second, my energy is highly refined, thank you very much. It's not some cheap gasoline you can just pump into your portal."

"We'll see how chatty you are once the extraction starts," Cassian said, turning toward a massive, swirling vortex in the back of the room. "I'll leave you two to bond. You have about ten minutes before the ritual begins. Enjoy the quality time."

As Cassian walked away into the shadows, Aether let out a slow, shaky breath. He looked down at Calista, his usual playful grin faltering.

"Calista... I'm sorry," Aether whispered, his voice uncharacteristically quiet.

"For what? Being annoying? Because you're always annoying," she grumbled, though she didn't look at him.

"No. For dragging you into this," Aether said, staring at the pink handcuffs. "If I hadn't crashed into you... if I wasn't such a useless, coreless mess... you'd be back at the High Court right now. You wouldn't be stuck in a cage waiting to be drained."

Calista paused, her silver eyes softening for a brief second before she snapped her gaze back to him. "Don't be ridiculous, Aether. I'm a Goddess of Justice. I chose to follow the anomaly. Besides, you're not entirely useless. Those pigeons were actually quite creative."

"Thanks," Aether smiled faintly. "I do try to keep things whimsical."

"Now, stop wallowing and help me think," she said, her tone returning to its sharp, practical edge. "How do we get out of this?"

"Well, hold still. I need to reach your hair," Aether muttered, his eyes darting to her head.

"Why are you looking at my hair at a time like this?" she snapped.

"Because you have a silver hairpin, and I am an expert in the delicate art of unauthorized lockpicking."

"It's called stealing, Aether."

"It's called survival! Now, lean your head closer. Yes, like that... got it!" Aether maneuvered his free right hand, plucking the pin from her silver locks. "Perfect. Now, don't move."

"I don't need a hairpin," Calista said, her arm muscles tensing. "I can channel my solar alignment. I'll shatter these bars with pure pressure."

"No, don't! The feedback—"

"Quiet!" Calista closed her eyes, her silver eyes flaring as she pulled against the bars.

A sharp spike of blue light flared from her wrist, but the crimson bars flared back instantly, sending a harsh shockwave through the pink chain.

"Ow! Stop it!" Aether yelled, his hand shaking as he tried to insert the hairpin into the runic lock. "You're ruining my focus! I almost had the first pin!"

"The first pin? There are ten of them, Aether! We don't have time for your amateur lockpicking!"

"Amateur? I'll have you know I once picked the lock on the Vault of Whispers!"

"And you got caught!"

"That was because Loki cheated! Now, hold still before I accidentally poke your wrist!"

"If you poke me, Aether, I will personally ensure your next fall from heaven is permanent."

"See? This is why we have communication issues. You're always so threatening."

"Stand back, foul villains! The champion of the sun has arrived!" a booming, obnoxious voice echoed through the chamber.

The heavy iron doors of the warehouse blasted inward, shattered into a thousand pieces by a brilliant, blinding flash of golden light. Standing in the dust cloud was a tall man in a gleaming golden chestplate, his blonde hair practically glowing under his own self-generated spotlight.

"Oh, great. It's Theron," Aether groaned, dropping the hairpin. "Of all the gods in all the realms, we get the human solar panel."

"Theron?" Calista blinked, squinting through the dust. "What are you doing here?"

"Saving you, of course, my dear Calista!" Theron declared, striking a heroic pose with his hands on his hips. "I tracked the disturbance. And look at you, trapped in a cage like a common criminal, chained to... wait, is that Aether?"

"Hi, Theron. Still wearing too much hair gel, I see," Aether waved with his free hand.

"Silence, peasant! I shall free you from this hideous cage," Theron said, stepping forward. He raised his glowing golden hands. "Observe! The power of the morning sun!"

"Theron, wait!" Calista yelled. "Do not strike the bars! It has a—"

"Behold!" Theron roared, launching a massive beam of golden light straight at the runic cage.

The golden beam slammed into the crimson bars. Instead of breaking, the cage absorbed the energy, turning a violent, pulsing shade of purple. A high-pitched, deafening siren began to echo through the warehouse.

"What? Why is it making that sound?" Theron blinked, his golden glow flickering.

"Because you're an idiot!" Aether screamed, his teeth rattling as the cage began to vibrate violently. "You just triggered the secondary defense! It's overloading!"

"This cage is now a thermal bomb," Calista said, her voice tight with panic. "In less than two minutes, the energy feedback will vaporize everyone inside it!"

"That... that shouldn't happen," Theron stammered, backing away. "My sunbeams are supposed to destroy evil, not make it explode!"

"Well, your sunbeams just doomed us all!" Aether yelled. "Do something!"

"I can't! My magic doesn't work on purple things! It clashes with my color scheme!" Theron cried out, looking genuinely distressed.

"I am going to die because of a sun-god's fashion crisis," Calista whispered, closing her eyes.

"Wait," Aether's eyes widened as he looked at the pulsing purple glass of the cage. "It's reflective. The high-density energy is turning the runic barrier into a perfect mirror."

"How is that helpful, Aether?" Calista hissed. "We're about to be turned into ash!"

"Theron!" Aether shouted, leaning against the bars. "Look at the barrier! Look closely!"

"Why would I look at a bomb?" Theron huffed.

"It's not a bomb, Theron! It's a test! Cassian knew you would come. He built this cage out of highly reflective runic glass to capture your ultimate, legendary beauty!"

"My... beauty?" Theron paused, his chest puffing out.

"Yes! Look at your reflection in the purple glass! It's flawless! But it's also a challenge. The cage is trying to contain your radiance. It thinks your vanity isn't strong enough to shatter it!"

"A challenge to my radiance?" Theron's eyes locked onto the glowing purple surface. "Preposterous! No mortal glass can contain my magnificent visage!"

"Exactly!" Aether urged. "You have to strike a pose! Your most devastating, heart-stopping, ego-shattering pose! Aim it directly at the glass! The sheer force of your self-love will overload the runes!"

"Is this a joke?" Calista whispered to Aether, her jaw slack.

"Trust me," Aether whispered back. "He is literally too dumb to fail this."

"Very well!" Theron shouted, stepping right up to the glowing cage. He ran a hand through his glowing hair, winked at his own reflection, and struck his signature 'Sun-Kissed Smolder' pose, channeling every ounce of his solar ego into his face. "Behold... perfection!"

A blinding, golden-purple wave of pure vanity energy erupted from Theron’s face, clashing violently with the runic glass. The runes shrieked, vibrated, and finally cracked under the absurd pressure of the sun-god's ego.

"It's actually working!" Calista gasped.

"Told you!" Aether laughed. "Never underestimate the power of a narcissist!"

With a deafening shatter, the runic cage exploded outward in a storm of glowing, razor-sharp shards. The magnetic hold on their wrists snapped, releasing them.

"Yes! I did it! I am indeed the fairest of them all!" Theron cheered, completely oblivious to the flying debris.

"Calista, look out!" Aether shrieked.

Through the swirling storm of dust and light, a massive, jagged shard of dark runic glass—still humming with unstable, explosive energy—was flying straight toward Calista's exposed chest. She was off-balance, her foot slipping on a piece of debris.

Without thinking, Aether lunged forward. The pink chain rattled violently as he threw his body directly in front of her.

"Aether, no!" Calista screamed.

The dark shard slammed directly into Aether's chest. A sharp, sickening gasp escaped his lips as a wave of cold, necrotic purple energy rippl

ed across his skin. His eyes went wide, and his knees instantly buckled, dragging Calista down with him as he collapsed onto the cold stone floor.

Master Vane stood over a sputtering brass burner, his hair standing on end as though he had recently experienced a minor electrical discharge, glaring at the three intruders with rheumy, bloodshot eyes."You brought it?" Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. "Besides, my sparkling disposition is the only reason those guards out by the main crane are currently distracted by a sneezing fit.""They are distracted because you managed to weaponize your own structural collapse," Nyxara muttered from the other side of the loading bay door, he

Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged

The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. "The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe.
