Kai summoned his halberd and his grip tightened on it, muscles flexing as he braced himself for the fight of his life. The forest trembled, the ground shook and then from the shadows burst forth……a tiny, squeaky thing.Kai blinked.Once then twice and again and again. Seriously?He slowly lowered his halberd, his expression caught somewhere between confusion and pure disbelief.“Wait a minute,” he muttered. “You’re… you’re kidding me.”The creature hovering weakly before him wasn’t a terrifying ten-meter monster. No. It was barely the size of a goat, maybe smaller or slightly bigger, with silky white fur that shimmered faintly under the moonlight. Two tiny wings sprouted awkwardly from its back, flapping weakly as it wobbled in the air. Its tail flicked like a cat’s, and its large golden eyes blinked up at him with the kind of innocent curiosity that could melt a warlord’s heart.It looked like a lion cub had gotten drunk, fallen in love with a pegasus, and somehow been born adorable.

Kai sneezed so loud that a few nearby birds took off like arrows. He blinked groggily, sitting up under the tree he had collapsed beneath. The air split like a blade as Jian’s punch landed, the sound so sharp it felt like thunder striking the earth. The impact cracked through the monster’s torso and black lines webbing across its body and for one glorious second, everyone thought that was it.But then the cracks glowed faintly red… and sealed themselves shut.“Oh, come on,” Abigail hissed under her breath, already springing forward.Her blade sang through the air, a sharp whistle slicing into the creature’s chest with a flash of heat.
