Two hundred Thousand dollars.
It was a number Abel knew well. He just couldn’t touch it.
He stood outside the glass wall of the ICU, watching his mother’s chest rise and fall beneath the white sheets.
Five years of hospital bills had kept that rhythm going. Now the machines beside her were beeping faster.
“Mr. Kane.” The doctor stopped beside him.
“Her condition has deteriorated. She needs emergency surgery tonight. If we wait, I can’t promise she will last until morning.”
Abel’s heart pounded.
“How much?” He asked. His voice shaky.
“Two hundred thousand. We need the deposit before we can begin.”
Abel wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.
“I’ll get it.”
He had no idea how.
His delivery job barely covered his phone bill. Every hospital payment for five years had come from one person, Adora, his wife.
And for the past five years, he kept paying her back with his pride and ego being dragged on the floor like a rag.
He stepped into the corridor and called her.
“What?” She answered on the fourth ring.
“I don’t know how to tell you this but, my mother needs emergency surgery right away. Two hundred thousand.”
“Please lend me, I will—-“
“You must think I’m stupid. Huh?” Adora interrupted.
“Every few months there’s a new emergency, and suddenly it’s two hundred thousand? How convenient!”
“No Adora. I promise, I am not lying—“
“Shut up Abel!” Adora snapped.
“When I tell you to fucking shut up, you shut up!” She hissed but Abel couldn’t.
His mother’s health was at stake and he knew that the only person who could help at this moment was her.
“Call the hospital. The doctor is right here, I can put him on—-”
Adora dropped the call.
Abel stared at the screen.
He sighed.
Five years ago, his mother was diagnosed with heart cancer, Abel had begged Adora for help. She had laughed at his desperation before agreeing to cover his mother’s hospital bills, but only on one condition: he would become her personal slave, obeying her every command and enduring every humiliation without complaint.
Out of fear of losing his mother, he agreed. And since then, Adora has been paying for his mother’s hospital bill.
But now, when his mother risked losing her life, she wasn’t inclined to pay and banged up the call on him.
He sighed.
He walked to the parking lot, entered into his old 1991 Toyota Corolla.
“If she wouldn’t listen over the phone, maybe she will when I see her.” He sighed again, starting the car.

The Clement estate sat behind iron gates at the top of Blackridge Hill, all marble and glass. Abel had lived inside it for five years and had never once felt like he belonged.
Adora was stretched across the cream sofa in the grand living room, scrolling through social media. A smile played on her lips as she stared into her screen.
A man appeared, lying shirtless against a pillow. Adora giggled at something he said, her fingers brushing across her lips as she smiled.
“I wish you were here,” the man said.
Adora glanced toward the entrance.
“Soon, darling. He’s not going to be around forever.”
She suddenly noticed Abel approaching.
“He’s here. Bye for now.”
Abel stepped in.
She squeezed up her face immediately.
She didn’t bother to look at him.
“You’re late. The dishes are piling up, and I’m starving.” She hissed.
“Adora, please. The hospital will confirm everything. Please understand that I never lied to you. Please, send your assistant, call them, anything. I just need the money tonight. My mother may die if we don’t—”
“And I told you, I’m not sending even a cent!” Adora snapped again.
She lifted her eyes, cold.
“Submit a request. If you really need the money for your mother, whatever. Finance will process it in seven working days, and I’ll sign it when it reaches my desk.”
“She doesn’t have seven days.” Abel voiced.
“The doctor said—-”
“I don’t care what the doctor said Abel.” Adora interrupted again.
“So far as I’m concerned, you should have planned better!” She tilted her head, and a thin smile appeared.
“Anyways, I’m not heartless. I will pity you.” She crossed her leg on the other.
“Go and cook. Wash the dishes. Show me you’re grateful for everything I have done for you, and maybe just maybe after dinner, I’ll think about it.”
“Maybe?” The word sounded in Abel’s head again.
For five years, he’d been working hard. He worked three jobs before he settled for this delivery job because it paid better. But they were never enough. Everything they could pay for was his mother's daily medication.
He swallowed hard. He knew it.
He wasn’t lazy. He never was. Just that luck wasn’t on his side and he had to depend on his wife to keep his mother alive.
But now when he needed her the most, she refused to help him and was all concerned about what she would eat before she would think if to help him or not.
“No.”
The word came out quiet.
Adora’s thumb froze over her screen.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.” His voice shook, but he held her gaze.
“My mother’s life is worth more than your dinner.”
Abel turned and walked out.
He was halfway to the car when his phone rang. He pulled it out.
“Mr. Kane, we can’t wait any longer. If we don’t begin within the hour…” The doctor didn’t finish. He didn’t need to.
One hour.
No savings. And Adora wouldn’t help.
What was he going to do?
He scrambled into his car, his hands trembling as he gripped the steering wheel.
One hour. That was all the time his mother had left.
“Mr. Morning,” he murmured, staring at his reflection in the side mirror. “You’re my only hope now.”
He turned the ignition and sped toward EasyWay Logistics. If anyone could help him raise the money in time, it was the man who signed his paychecks.
But as he pressed his foot against the accelerator, one terrifying thought refused to leave his mind.
What if Mr. Morning refused him too?
