EVERYONE gathered inside the conference hall of the Griffin Mansion. Theodore acted as if he did not cause a skirmish outside. He was more excited to meet the heir so he could profile him and decide whether he’d take his side or join the faction to eliminate him, knowing that most members of the board of directors were unhappy with the sudden change.
Oliver was presiding over the meeting. He sat in the middle chair of the long, rectangular table.
“Now that everyone is here, we shall now start.” Oliver straightened his back and met everyone’s questioning eyes.
“But, where is Mr. Griffin?” Theodore blurted out.
“As you can see, he’s not here.” Oliver grinned. “But rest assured, he’s seeing you at the moment. It’s just that he’s not yet ready to reveal his identity.”
Everyone gazed at the security cameras around the room. They couldn’t hide the disappointment on their faces and began whispering to each other.
A male voice reverberated in the conference room. “My apologies for not meeting you in person, but I’m honored to meet every one of you. This is Maximus Griffin.”
Oliver’s lips twitched up upon recognizing Max’s voice. “See? You may not see him, but he’s with us. It’s his prerogative as the major shareholder to meet every member of the board. He only wants to take extra precautions since some of you might be against the succession.”
Theodore cleared his throat. “I don’t think any of us will be against the succession. The late chairman would surely not appoint just anybody incapable of protecting his legacy. I bet he’d want to expand his business empire.”
“Go ahead, I’m listening,” Max said through the speaker.
He was comfortably seated in the swivel chair inside his private office, watching everybody in the conference hall on his huge monitor. He only wore a plain white shirt and ripped jeans since he had no plans of revealing himself yet. Max made sure to remember every face in the room.
There was a deliberation of ideas, and none of the board members openly expressed their disagreement about the succession. However, the other members of the Griffins would surely take this matter into their own hands, just like how they sent an assassin to kill him.
When the meeting was over, Theodore breathed in and out as he sauntered towards the living room. He found Georgina staring at one abstract painting.
“My love! How did it go?” Her face lit up upon seeing him.
Theodore loosened his tie. “Let’s talk in the car.”
“Sure!” Georgina gazed at the painting again. “This type of painting is familiar.”
“Of course, the artist is quite popular with affluent people. Although little is known about the artist, a piece would cost millions. I badly want one, but I can’t afford such luxury at the moment.” Theodore pointed out the painting. “This is the famous piece called Blood Symphony in Storm.”
“I see, it’s amazing. It’s like a series of spattered blood, so dark and fascinating.” Georgina smiled awkwardly as her eyes focused on the initials on the lower right of the painting—it was MxG.
Georgina shook her head. She must be imagining things. Maybe her ex-husband was just doing replicas since the stroke of the artist’s signature was the same, and she had seen some similar pieces, which she often called trash.
“Let’s go. This place is suffocating.” Theodore came out of the house without even waiting for Georgina.

MAX smoked on the balcony of his room as he looked at the cars leaving one after another. He was about to light another cigarette when Oliver came.
“Apologies for the intrusion, Max. You see, I’m an old man now. I’m transferring my job to Blaze, so he’ll always be with you.”
“I know you’ll say that, Oliver. Shall I say thank you for your service, then?” Max chuckled.
Oliver laughed. “I am not going to retire yet, probably after your succession. But I’ll remain your consultant. I know you can handle your grandfather’s empire, Max.”
Max puffed on his cigarette. “You know this is not my cup of tea. And there are many things you’re not telling me, just like how my grandfather manipulated me even after death.”
Oliver’s forehead creased. “Manipulated?”
“Stop pretending, Oliver. You must know that in his last will, he is forcing me to marry the heiress of the Turners.”
The old man nodded. “Oh, that.”
“I just got divorced. Call me old-fashioned, but marriage is a lifelong commitment, and I can’t marry someone out of family obligation. It’s not fair for my future bride.”
Oliver gently tapped Max’s shoulder. “This has been the way for the rich to merge their businesses. Like the Griffins, the Turners are one of the richest families in the world. Marriage is also business, Max.”
Max put the cigarette into the gold ashtray. “Everything is business, even human lives.”
There was a long silence between them, and suddenly, Blaze came in. “Did I interrupt something?”
“It’s alright, Blaze. I’ve already told Max about your promotion.”
Blaze’s eyes widened. “Is it official? I’ll be the young master’s secretary and personal bodyguard.”
Oliver tilted his head, smiling. “Yes, under my guidance, of course.”
Blaze arched his head down. “It’s my pleasure to serve you, Young Master.”
“Don’t do this again, Blaze. Bowing before me, I’m just a lowly human, too.” Max grinned.
He could tell that the young man was indeed happy with his promotion, and with Oliver’s recommendation, Blaze must be capable of the job.
“Now, Blaze, you’ll accompany the young master to Turner’s Mansion in Winden Ridge. Tomorrow night, eight in the evening, sharp.” Oliver gazed at Max as if he were teasing. “You have a natural charm, Max.”
“Yes, Sir Oliver! I’ll do my job well.” Blaze’s face was beaming.
Only Max’s face darkened as he could not back out, remembering his grandfather’s clause in the last will about Ares, his secret alternate identity.
‘Damn that old man! Just what are the things he knew?’

THEY ran out of the dilapidated building as soon as they heard a familiar growl.“Your family is something else. But I hope you won’t mention this to outsiders,” Max said after sprinting away from the domed structure.“You are an outsider and not supposed to know about this family secret,” Isla said while trying to catch her breath.“Let’s continue. We could catch some sunlight soon if we reach the thinner part of the forest. The trees here look alive, as if they were here a million years ago.”Isla remained quiet even though she agreed with Max’s words. She stumbled with Max when he suddenly stopped running and gestured with his hand to make her stop.“Something is not right. Did you hear that?” Max looked around. It was still pitch dark, despite his wristwatch showing it was around noon.“I can’t hear anything suspicious.” Isla leaned in closer because her body was too exhausted to fight if another wild animal launched an attack. When Max looked up, he cursed hard. “Son of a bitch,
Chapter 16: The Facility
MAX adjusted his aim as the bear went berserk after being shot. “Don’t tell me the bullets couldn’t penetrate its thick fur.”“I’ll help you!” Isla attempted to pull the trigger but immediately paused when Max reprimanded her.“I told you, on my command. Stay put. I will find a way to eliminate it.” Max used all the rounds of bullets from his rifle and loaded another. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the next thing we see is a flying unicorn.”“What are we going to do now?” Isla ignored Max’s witty remarks.“Be quiet! Regardless of what you hear, refrain from using your flashlight. It’s better if you close your eyes.”“Understood.”Max turned off his flashlight and trained his eyes to get used to the darkness. As much as he wanted to take down the bear with the lights on, he didn't want Isla to witness such a cruel thing. Or else the lady would think he was a monster.“Max, where are you?” Isla whispered. No matter how she tried to calm her nerves, her body shook involuntarily.Max took ad
Chapter 15: Forbidden Forest
AFTER cleaning himself at the hidden waterfall they discovered along the trail, Max broke his silence.“Can you please explain why such an animal that had been long extinct existed here?”“I don’t know,” Isla said, looking down. She kept averting her gaze because Max was half-naked, revealing his perfectly chiseled body with a few notable scars. To remove the bloodstain from the tiger, Max squeezed his upper tactical suit. “Then why did you keep following me?”Isla couldn’t conceal her astonishment. “Y-You knew?”Max heaved a sigh and shook his head to dry his hair. Then he fixed it with his usual man bun.“You could have been dead if I weren’t nearby.”Isla swallowed hard. How could she stay arrogant towards the person who saved her life? She was on the verge of breaking down.“I have never been here. My father had set a rule that we shouldn’t enter this forbidden forest since there were some unexplained deaths here.”“Then why did your father not brief us about the dangers of this a

A GUNSHOT reverberated around, a signal that the hunt had begun. Every participant chose their path in haste, while Max strolled on an established trail as if he didn’t know what to do.Liliane was focusing on the monitor, pinpointing Max's location, while hundreds of drones closely monitored them. A meter away behind her was Blaze, who worried about his boss because Max seemed already lost in the forest.“You should’ve come with your boss. Look at him, he’s lost!” Liliane was silently enjoying Max’s hardship in navigating the forest.“Yes.” Blaze came near her. “I’m afraid he wouldn’t let me. And it’s against the hunting rules.”Liliane shook her shoulder. “On the surface, he looked capable. But seeing him rattle in the wild makes him so pathetic.”Blaze chose to remain silent. He didn’t want Turner’s matriarch to have bad blood with him, despite his disapproval of her slandering his boss. The monitor tracking Max’s movement abruptly lost contact after a rumbling sound was heard.“Oh
Chapter 13: Spring Hunt
“HOLY shit! I thought we’d ride a bike!” Blaze was dumbfounded to witness a helicopter inside the hangar. It was around noontime when Max decided to go.“We’ll ride this beast to Turner’s Estate. Come on!” Max threw a headset, which Blaze quickly caught.“We can request our private pilot to fly us there, Boss. It’s cloudy; I can even see a bolt of lightning.”Max clicked his tongue. “I miss piloting this baby. I’ll go alone if you don't hop in. I can’t believe you’d chicken out of mere turbulence, Blaze.”“Of course not. I’m ready to go!”When they were in the air, Max maneuvered the chopper with ease. Blaze kept his surprised expression as he witnessed his boss expertly flying the helicopter. In just an hour, they landed at the helipad of Turner’s mansion. I am concerned about my safety. Even within the company, he managed to track me down.” Georgina feigned a sob to enhance her convincing performance.“Stop crying, my love. Of course, I’ll do everything for your safety. I’ll fire him myself tomorrow.” Theodore hushed her as he gently stroked her back.“Why would this guy stalk you? Is he a fan or something?”Georgina cleared her throat. “The truth is, he is my ex-husband.”“Oh, now I get it. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he’s out of our lives.” Theodore knew what to do as soon as he heard that the man was Georgina’s ex-husband.
