“YOU deliberately disobeyed me, Isla! If I hadn’t hinted it out, you would’ve flown out of the country with my private jet.” Scott Turner was fuming as he scolded his only daughter.

“How could you let me marry off so easily, Dad? And to that trash!” Isla’s face was red. She was indeed trying to fly out of the country and run away.

“I spoiled you rotten, Isla. I gave every luxury in the world to you. And you know your obligation to be born into this family!” The veins in Scott’s temple became visible. His wife, Liliane Turner, tried to calm him down.

“Control your temper, Scott. It’s not good for your health.” Liliane stroked her husband’s back, yet it did not help to cool him. “Let me talk to our daughter, okay?”

“You better talk to her, Liliane. Or I will disown her!” Scott turned and left.

“Oh, God! You can’t do that, Dad!” Isla clenched her fist.

“Isla, darling, come with me. Let’s talk about it. You know your dad; nothing can change his decision, especially when it comes to business.” Liliane smiled and held her daughter’s hand. Together, they went inside their private library.

“Sit, Isla. Breathe in and out. Your father will disown you if you keep getting in his way,” Liliane said calmly while gently brushing her daughter’s long, wavy blonde hair. “Look at your two older brothers; they just go with the flow. You know well that marriage is a business, right?”

“But Mom! What about my happiness? I have the man I love, he’s also rich,” Isla reasoned.

“Happiness?” Liliane chuckled. “This is not a fairy tale, darling. Besides, the man you’re dating will never be as rich as the Griffin’s new heir.”

“That trash!” Her jaw tightened. “He only became a Griffin recently. We investigated him already, Mom. You know that guy is lowly trash apart from his surname!”

“And that’s a good thing, isn’t it? He’d be under your fingers. And using your charm, we can easily eliminate him. By then, his vast assets will be ours.” Liliane’s eyes gleamed with greed.

Isla finally calmed her senses. Her mother had a point; she was too blinded by her emotions lately.

“What can you say, darling? Tell your lover to wait patiently if he really loves you. I’m not against your relationship with Benedict because once I was in your shoes.”

“Thank you for enlightening me, Mom.” Isla’s lips quivered up.

“Now, prepare yourself to meet the Griffin’s heir tonight. You wouldn’t want to go to a battle unprepared, right?”

“Yes, Mom!” Isla sprang up from her seat and sprinted towards her room. She opened the small cabinet on her bedside table and grabbed the pictures of the man who was betrothed to her.

‘This trash will regret this!’

She silently swore as she looked at each picture of the man. Indeed, Maximus Griffin was complete garbage, especially his messy looks.

Isla grimaced as if about to vomit. She questioned the heavens, why would she marry him?

The man appeared dirty because of his stubble and disheveled shoulder-length hair. Isla was sure he must also have bad hygiene.

“I will make your life a living hell, Maximus Griffin!”

ISLA had prepared to meet her future husband. She chose a halter crimson dress that flaunted her curves. Her towering height was intimidating, and her lethal charm would be enough to assert her dominance over Maximus Griffin.

While inside the room, she heavily breathed out to calm herself. If her mother hadn’t talked with her about the marriage and devised a wicked plan, she’d run away, even if her father disowned her.

A moment later, one of her maids came in. “Madam, the visitors have arrived. Your father wants you to come down.”

“I’ll be out in a minute.”

The middle-aged maid exited her room in silence.

Isla gracefully walked out of the room with her head held high. She had to profile her enemy closely and focus on the goal—to take every ounce of Griffin’s vast assets.

A young bodyguard in a tactical suit stood beside the main entrance while the Turner couple awaited their visitor.

Isla smirked as she slowly walked down the grand staircase. It was part of the plan, Maximus had to see her at her best since first impressions last.

“The young master is here!” The head bodyguard announced.

The group of men parted into two groups, giving way to their boss.

Max came in confidently, which astounded Liliane and Isla at first glance.

“Maximus Griffin! Finally.” Scott warmly smiled as he offered his hand, and Max accepted it. They exchanged a firm handshake.

Liliane glanced furtively at her daughter, who seemed to freeze on the stairs.

Isla held tightly to the handrail because she was not expecting to see a dignified man before her. Maximus Griffin seemed naturally rich in the way he gestured with his body.

‘No, he must be acting.’ Isla pulled herself together. The man wore a dark navy three-piece suit, and his shoulder-length hair was cleanly tied in a man bun.

To be fair, the man was better-looking in person because he was tidy. He probably prepared a lot for this moment since the Turners also came from a very influential family.

“This is Isla, my only daughter. Darling, meet your fiancé, Maximus Griffin.” Scott introduced her after Liliane.

“It’s a pleasure to meet Scott’s only princess.” Max lightly arched his head, and then he took advantage when Isla raised her hand for a handshake. He kissed the back of her palm, which caught her off guard.

“It’s an honor to meet you, too.” Isla casually pulled out her hand. His manly scent warmed up her senses.

At that moment, she realized that she had to work hard because Maximus Griffin wasn’t the gullible man she thought he was.

Meanwhile, Max silently breathed out. He was against this meeting, but Oliver had laid down the pros and cons. Besides, he had to dig out information about his grandfather’s whereabouts when he was still alive. Max was sure the Turners were a big part of it.

“So, what do you think of my daughter? I guess her good looks would complement yours,” Scott said amidst their dinner.

Max smiled timidly. “I don’t want to force her. Let’s do this slowly. I’m sure Isla needs time for our formal engagement.” Max casually chewed a medium-rare steak and drank the most expensive red wine from the cellar.

Isla remained quiet. She was still observing Max, who seemed at ease in the presence of his family.

Scott and Max seemed to get along, while Isla and Liliane were tense. Could they possibly bring down the Griffin heir?

THEY ran out of the dilapidated building as soon as they heard a familiar growl.“Your family is something else. But I hope you won’t mention this to outsiders,” Max said after sprinting away from the domed structure.“You are an outsider and not supposed to know about this family secret,” Isla said while trying to catch her breath.“Let’s continue. We could catch some sunlight soon if we reach the thinner part of the forest. The trees here look alive, as if they were here a million years ago.”Isla remained quiet even though she agreed with Max’s words. She stumbled with Max when he suddenly stopped running and gestured with his hand to make her stop.“Something is not right. Did you hear that?” Max looked around. It was still pitch dark, despite his wristwatch showing it was around noon.“I can’t hear anything suspicious.” Isla leaned in closer because her body was too exhausted to fight if another wild animal launched an attack. When Max looked up, he cursed hard. “Son of a bitch,

MAX adjusted his aim as the bear went berserk after being shot. “Don’t tell me the bullets couldn’t penetrate its thick fur.”“I’ll help you!” Isla attempted to pull the trigger but immediately paused when Max reprimanded her.“I told you, on my command. Stay put. I will find a way to eliminate it.” Max used all the rounds of bullets from his rifle and loaded another. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the next thing we see is a flying unicorn.”“What are we going to do now?” Isla ignored Max’s witty remarks.“Be quiet! Regardless of what you hear, refrain from using your flashlight. It’s better if you close your eyes.”“Understood.”Max turned off his flashlight and trained his eyes to get used to the darkness. As much as he wanted to take down the bear with the lights on, he didn't want Isla to witness such a cruel thing. Or else the lady would think he was a monster.“Max, where are you?” Isla whispered. No matter how she tried to calm her nerves, her body shook involuntarily.Max took ad

AFTER cleaning himself at the hidden waterfall they discovered along the trail, Max broke his silence.“Can you please explain why such an animal that had been long extinct existed here?”“I don’t know,” Isla said, looking down. She kept averting her gaze because Max was half-naked, revealing his perfectly chiseled body with a few notable scars. To remove the bloodstain from the tiger, Max squeezed his upper tactical suit. “Then why did you keep following me?”Isla couldn’t conceal her astonishment. “Y-You knew?”Max heaved a sigh and shook his head to dry his hair. Then he fixed it with his usual man bun.“You could have been dead if I weren’t nearby.”Isla swallowed hard. How could she stay arrogant towards the person who saved her life? She was on the verge of breaking down.“I have never been here. My father had set a rule that we shouldn’t enter this forbidden forest since there were some unexplained deaths here.”“Then why did your father not brief us about the dangers of this a

A meter away behind her was Blaze, who worried about his boss because Max seemed already lost in the forest.“You should’ve come with your boss. Look at him, he’s lost!” Liliane was silently enjoying Max’s hardship in navigating the forest.“Yes.” Blaze came near her. “I’m afraid he wouldn’t let me. And it’s against the hunting rules.”Liliane shook her shoulder. “On the surface, he looked capable. But seeing him rattle in the wild makes him so pathetic.”Blaze chose to remain silent. It’s cloudy; I can even see a bolt of lightning.”Max clicked his tongue. “I miss piloting this baby. I’ll go alone if you don't hop in. I can’t believe you’d chicken out of mere turbulence, Blaze.”“Of course not. I’m ready to go!”When they were in the air, Max maneuvered the chopper with ease.
