"Jace! Jace, can you hear me?!" Skyler's voice cracked with static over the comms. "Answer me, damn it! What the hell just happened out there?"

He pressed a hand to his earpiece. "Skyler... I hear you." He replied. "The chopper... It's gone. Shot down."

"Shot down?" By who?"

Jace's eyes narrowed as he looked toward the rooftop where he'd seen them. "Not who, what. Some men in black robes. Faces covered. They fired a rocket and brought it down. Then..." He hesitated, his jaw tightening. "They pointed at me. Like they knew me or something."

Skyler went silent for a moment, her voice trembling when she spoke again. "Jace, that doesn't make sense. No one's supposed to be in Creek Falls besides you and Ana. That place was sealed off after..."

"I know," Jace interrupted. "But it seems this cursed place isn't planning to let us go. Not until it gets what it wants."

Ana, still shaken, clutched his arm. "You mean... until they take me?"

Jace turned to her, his expression softening. "I don't kn

"Jace, don't you think it'll be safer for us to stay here in the building till the chopper arrives?" Ana asked."It's too dangerous, Ana. Something big is headed toward this building, waiting here is suicide." Jace said as he pulled Ana through the doorway, sprinting down the cracked pavement. The night air was thick with dust and fog, every sound swallowed by the distant rumble of something impossibly huge moving behind them."What is that thing?" Ana asked in ragged gasps as her eyes widened with terror."Trust me, you don't wanna know." he shouted, dragging Ana forward. The sound came again, a deep, guttural roar that rolled through the city like thunder. A vibration followed, strong enough to make nearby lamp post fall. Somewhere behind them, a building collapsed in a burst of flame and dust."Jace!" Ana screamed as part of the ruins crashed to the ground just inches away.Jace didn't look back. His firearm was empty, his grenades were gone. All he had left was his combat knife, t

The walls trembled as the creature lunged forward, it's claws slicing through the air like blades. Jace ducked, rolling beneath it's swip and slashing upward with his combat knife. The blade struck it's flesh, but the monster barley flinched. It roared heavily, shaking the broken windows as it swung it's other arm. Jace barely had time to react as the force of the blow sent him crashing into a concrete pillar. Pain exploded across his ribs, and his knife clattered to the floor."JACE?" Ana screamed from the upper floor, leaning over the railing."Stay back!" he shouted, blood dripping from the corner of his mouth. "Do not come down here!"The creature moved cautiously toward him, it's red eyes glowing, and it's voice slithered through the air."Jace," the monster called mockingly. "You know you can't protect her forever, soldier. She's marked and there is nothing you can do to change that. You should've accepted my offer.""Never." Jace replied as he lunged for his knife, sliding bene

"Jace... we're completely surrounded," Ana whispered, fear trembling in her voice as she clutched his back tightly. "What are we going to do?"Jace stood still, a grenade clutched in his hand. "Ana, do you trust me?" He asked calmly."Why are you saying that now?" She shot back, her voice shaking."Because we're about to do something crazy." Jace replied."What...?" Ana barely managed to say before Jace grabbed her wrist, pulled the pin, and hurled the grenade toward the pack of monsters closing in. Without another word, he turned, sprinted with Ana, and leapt from the bell tower.Ana screamed as they plummeted through the air. Jace held her tightly, firing his magnetic rope toward the nearest building. The line shot out with a metallic snap and caught hold. The rope swung them violently toward a tall glass window as they crashed through it, tumbling hard across the floor.Jace groaned, quickly scrambling to his feet. He rushed to the shattered window, retrieved his rope, then hurrie

Ana ate slowly, the crackers vanishing in tiny bites, as though she were afraid the food itself might disappear if she hurried. She drank too, easing the dryness in her throat. And for the first time in days, her trembling hands grew still.Ana was finally too tired to stay awake and rested against the wall, breathing slowly as she slept. Jace stayed by the window, rifle ready, watching the streets of Creek Falls. The ruined city was too quiet as hours passed by. Jace thought maybe, just maybe, they had won a few stolen moments of peace. He glanced at Ana, sleeping soundly for the first time, and allowed himself the smallest exhale of relief. Then, he caught the sound of someone stepping on the stone.Jace gripped his gun tightly thinking it was the monsters again. But the sound was calm, patient, as if human. Then, a familiar mocking voice spoke."Do you really think you could keep her hidden, soldier?"Immediately, Jace knew it was the masked priest. From the shadowed doorway at the

The voice echoed again, thin and sweet, like a child lost in the dark."Help me... please..."Jace's gut screamed trap, because the tone sounded as if it was calling on purpose. It didn't sound like the panicked cry of a trapped child, it sounded like a bait.Ana suddenly, Ana held Jace's arm tightly, trembling. "It's... it's a kid," she whispered, her voice breaking."No, Ana," He said sharply. "That's not a child."The creeping sound grew louder as Jace's flashlight, caught the long limbs of a monster with shiny skin, gleaming like black tar. It's face looked shadowy, twisted with a childlike smile, it's eyes were empty holes, and from it's mouth spilled that same innocent plea."Help me..."Ana tried not to scream and stumbled away. The monster lunged forward, Jace fired immediately. The shot punched into it's chest, spraying dark fluid against the stone. The monster shrieked like a metal tearing apart, before it's limbs lashed forward, smashing into the wall where Ana had been a m
