Chapter 1

The world had truly fallen apart for Luca. The past? He no longer had it. Power? Everything had crumbled, just like his own body. And his loved ones?

She was the one who had injected the poison into his body.

Laying in the dusty remains of New York City, a thin, brown haired man with faded brown eyes coughed as he tried to catch his parched breath. He wanted to scream, to get the help he desperately needed, but everyone who had been by his side was gone. His chief scientist, his supporters in the government, had all been reduced to skeletons, and even his right hand lab assistant, Kyle, had not survived.

Luca Kane should have had a bright future with his status as a member of the Kane family, that's what everyone said.

He was the talented underground heir to Genoven Kane, the king of the underworld drug business. As the youngest illegitimate child, Luca surprised everyone by inheriting the Kane family's special blood, pure Kane blood that could heal anyone with just a drop.

None of Luca's siblings inherited it, and Luca's life could have been smoother because he was also blessed with a brilliant mind. Even the government's chief scientist targeted him and made him his secret assistant.

However, fate gave Luca love, and despite everyone's warnings, Luca chose to fight for it. He abdicated his throne, even lowering himself further by accepting his role as a downtrodden husband, and now watching his wife sell his special blood information for her secret lover? Luca couldn't believe he could lower himself any further.

"Lisa... How could you?" Luca raised his hand, which looked like a death twig.

Lisa Sorella, his own wife, stared at him from her medical attire in disgust, as if she had forgotten that he earned it for protecting her from the deadly poison gas she released from his laboratory.

The entire city of New York was now contaminated by that poison gas.

"You... How could you do this to me, huh? I love you, Lisa," Luca said, before the wind knocked him out, and dust got into his mouth. His chest was bleeding, and his body was failing to heal from his gunshot wound.

“Did our 10 years of marriage mean nothing to you? I gave everything to you! Even when you asked for my blood to mix perfume, I gave it, and—”

“I’m sorry, Luca. It’s just that my heart was never entirely yours to begin with,” Lisa sighed. She crouched in front of him, her hand still holding the rosary.

In fact, the rosary was Luca’s gift to her, even when he was penniless when he first stepped down from the Kane throne.

“I’m truly sorry. I just love Daniel so much. He was my first love and will always be, and when he finally returned to my arms, I couldn’t just refuse him. But I prayed for your life that you—”

“But still, how could you sell me, the one who made your perfume a success? It was my blood that—”

“So much talk for a dying man, isn’t it time we go, honey?” A man dressed in a plain white Ralph Lauren t shirt and Gucci jeans said. He wore a plague mask, but Luca recognized him by the bastard look of his eyes.

It was Daniel, his wife's secret lover and ex lover.

“Why don't we just get this over with and let his body rot here? I've done my research, and it says that if he turns to rubble, his body will release the last of his gas,” Daniel said. “That gas can neutralize whatever poison is plaguing this city. Besides, his body has the same compound as it.”

“Come on, let's start disposing of his body. He's getting disgusting. Can you get a shovel, honey, while I wait here for the helicopter?”

“S-sure!!”

Lisa ran over to the construction workers their boss had assigned to save the company's property from the poison gas.

During their marriage, Luca had never let his wife carry anything like a shovel or even speak to a male manual laborer, and as Daniel crouched down, grabbing Luca by the collar, Luca already knew what kind of husband Daniel would be.

“So… It’s a shame I can’t take you, the ex Kane bloodline who made that ugly woman’s perfume a success. What a shame…” Daniel sighed, and Luca spat in his face. 

The spit hit Daniel square in the nose, and Daniel hit Luca hard on the head with a rock.

Luca’s eyes rolled back as he felt a terrible headache.

“You’re a very lucky man, aren’t you? I still wonder how you carry such powerful royal blood. I mean, I heard you’re just the son of a concubine, right? What a shame you’ll be a corpse soon! If only you knew that Lisa’s love was all fake and that we’ve been after you from the start, you might still be rolling in wealth.”

“Targeting me?” Luca frowned. “What are you talking about? I have nothing to do with—”

“Luca Kane’s identity? How rich are you, your family background? You don’t think Lisa was only with you because you’re simply Luca, do you?” Daniel laughed. “That girl, she’s only been after me from the start.”

“If I hadn’t told her to date you, she wouldn’t have even looked at you. In fact, she hated you chasing her, Luca! She never even wanted you in the first place. If only I hadn’t told her you were a Kane! But now that you’ve chosen her and renounced your throne? She feels like she’s been beaten to death. There’s no one out there who would want you without the Kane title, Luca. Not even your mother,” Daniel said, and it hit Luca hard.

Luca knew that his mother had abandoned him. All the servants said it was because his grandparents wouldn’t give them a share, so she killed herself, but Luca chose to believe otherwise because he remembered how warm his mother was.

“Oh, looks like the girl’s back. Alright, I have to go now,” Daniel stood up, giving Lisa a quick smile. "Besides, I have to make a good impression on my in laws. They're Sorella, after all. A renowned perfume company? Surely they've never thrown a party or a wedding for you before, right? After I proposed to Lisa, they threw me a huge party. They even gave me the Northwest house as a dowry!"
