GRANDMA’S BIG DAY
last update2026-09-17 21:19:36

The Anderson family house was full of people. Music played. Tables were covered with food. Everyone had come for Grandma’s birthday. It was a big party, the kind the family threw every year to show how important they were.

Grandma sat in her special chair near the front, smiling and greeting guests. She looked happy, but her eyes kept searching the room. After a while she called Sarah over.

“Sarah, where is that husband of yours?” Grandma asked. “I need him to help clean up the mess. Tell him to come now.”

Sarah put on a sad face. “Sorry, Grandma. He didn’t come today. I told him it was important, but he refused.”

Grandma’s smile disappeared. “What?!”

Her loud voice made the music stop. Everyone turned to look. All eyes fixed on Grandma and Sarah.

“Why would that useless boy refuse to come to my birthday?” Grandma shouted. “Who does he think he is? Call him right now!”

Sarah nodded and took out her phone. Then she started crying. Real tears rolled down her cheeks. The whole room went quiet.

“He asked me for a divorce,” Sarah said between sobs. “He packed his things and left. I don’t even know where he is. He said he was done with me and the whole family.”

Grandma’s face turned red. “What did you just say?”

“I caught him cheating,” Sarah continued, wiping her eyes. “When I faced him about it, he insulted me and all of us. Then he left and told me to sign divorce papers by today.”

People in the room looked at each other. Some whispered. Grandma was shaking with anger.

“How dare he?” she said. “Call him here this minute!”

Sarah dialed. The phone was on speaker so everyone could hear.

Alex answered on the first ring.

“Grandma wants you at the house right now,” Sarah said in a rushed voice.

“Okay. I’m on my way,” Alex replied and hung up.

One of Sarah’s cousins, Mia, suddenly laughed. “Some girls think they’re so pretty but can’t even keep their husbands happy.”

Sarah spun around. “You’re just jealous of me. That’s why you talk like that.”

Mia smirked. “Jealous? Of a girl whose husband walks out? At least my boyfriend has money. I’m getting married soon. You’re stuck with a broke man who cheats.”

The two girls started arguing. Voices got louder. Other family members joined in. One side took Sarah’s part. The other side took Mia’s. The party turned into a shouting match.

Grandma had enough. She stood up and yelled as loud as she could.

“Shut up, all of you!”

The room went silent again.

Grandma looked at Sarah. “When is that boy getting here?”

Sarah called again. This time Alex’s voice came through quickly. “I’ll be there in a minute.” Then the call ended.

Mia laughed once more. Sarah shot her a cold look.

Grandma sat fuming. “Where is he already?”

A voice came from the entrance.

“I’m right here, Grandma.”

Everyone turned. Alex walked into the room. He wore simple clothes and carried nothing. He looked around at all the staring faces and gave a small smile.

“Sorry for the wait. There was traffic,” he said.

Grandma glared at him. “Who do you think you are, keeping me waiting? And what gave you the right to cheat on Sarah? What made you think you could insult this family and ask for a divorce?”

Alex’s face changed. The calm look disappeared for a second. He glanced at Sarah, then at the crowd, then back at Grandma.

The whole room waited. No one moved. No one spoke.

Alex stood still in the middle of all those angry eyes. He could feel the hate coming from every direction. Sarah had told her story well. Everyone believed her. They all thought he was the cheater, the ungrateful son-in-law, the problem that needed to be fixed.

He took a slow breath. Inside, his mind was clear. This was the moment he had expected. The last test. The final time he would stand in this house as the quiet delivery boy they all looked down on.

Sarah watched him with fake tears still on her face. Mia smiled like she was enjoying the show. Grandma’s hands gripped the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles turned white.

Alex knew whatever he said next would start a storm. He also knew he could not stay silent forever. The year of pretending was almost over. Soon they would learn the truth. But not yet. Not in this moment. First he had to let them show exactly how far they would go.

He opened his mouth to speak.

The room stayed completely quiet, waiting for his answer.

  • THE QUIET AFTER THE STORM

The front door closed behind Alexander Brooks and the two men in dark suits. For a few seconds no one inside the Anderson house moved. The birthday balloons still floated near the ceiling. The cake still sat on the table with candles that had never been lit. The golden ruler lay on the floor where it had fallen earlier. Then the silence broke.Sarah’s legs gave out. She sat down hard on the nearest chair and stared at the empty doorway. Her mouth opened and closed but no words came out. Grandma stayed in her big chair, hands shaking. The color had left her face completely.“Brooks,” Ethan whispered from the floor. He said the name again like it might change if he repeated it enough times. “Alexander Brooks… the real one?”Williams took a step back and almost tripped over a chair. His confident look was gone. He looked at Sarah, then at Grandma, then at the door again.“That cannot be true,” he said, but his voice was weak. “A delivery boy cannot be the Brooks heir. Someone is playing

  • THE NAME NO ONE EXPECTED

The room stayed quiet for a long time after Ethan’s secrets spilled out. No one knew what to say. Ethan sat on the floor with red eyes and shaking hands. The rich guests who had clapped for him earlier now looked away. Sarah’s face had gone pale. Grandma’s hands gripped the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles turned white.Alex did not move. He just stood in the middle of everyone and waited. One of the older guests finally spoke. “How does a delivery boy know all that about a company manager? That information is private.”Another man nodded. “Yes. Bank accounts. Fake papers. Secret money. How do you know these things, young man?”Alex looked at them one by one. His voice stayed calm and steady.“I pay attention,” he said. “That’s all.”Grandma stood up slowly. Her voice was sharp again, but there was something new in it now — worry mixed with anger.“You will answer properly,” she said. “You are not leaving this house until you explain yourself. Who told you these things? Who are

  • ONLY IF THEY KNEW

The truth was out. Ethan had lied to everyone about his job. The same people who had congratulated him now looked angry and embarrassed.Grandma turned on him first.“Ethan,” she said, using his real name for the first time that night. “You stood here and lied to all of us. You made us look like fools. Apologize.”Ethan’s face went dark. Being called by his first name already felt like a fall. A minute ago he was “Mr. Manager.” Now he was just Ethan. One of the guests spoke up. “You should get on your knees. After what you did, a simple sorry is not enough.”Ethan looked at Grandma. She did not stop the idea. He felt his last bit of pride break. He dropped to his knees in front of everyone.“I’m sorry,” he said, voice low. “I was ashamed to tell you I lost the job. I didn’t want to look weak. Please forgive me.”Grandma nodded once. “Apology accepted. Stand up.”Ethan stood. His legs felt weak.Alex let out a small laugh. Everyone turned to him.“A while ago you called me a loser,” Al

  • THE PHONE CALL

Ethan’s phone rang loud in the quiet room. Everyone looked at him. He smiled in a shy way and took the phone from his jacket. When he saw the name on the screen he smiled bigger. It was the caretaker of the delivery company — the man who decided if managers kept their jobs.Ethan answered quickly. “Hello, good day sir.”The voice on the other end was rough. “Good day. I have news for you.”“I’m listening, sir.”“I’m sorry, but we are not renewing your contract. You are no longer the manager starting now. Go collect your things from the office.”The line went dead.Ethan’s face changed for a second. Then he forced a big smile so no one would notice. He could not let the guests, especially Alex, know he had just been fired. If they found out he would lose all respect. Grandma would stop liking him. He would become a nobody. He put the phone away and spoke in a loud, happy voice.“My contract has been extended. I am still the manager. In fact, they gave me a bigger position. I will handl

Grandma’s eyes were wide, but a small smile pulled at her lips. She was happy Alex had refused. It made him look even more stupid in front of everyone.Victoria forced a smile so she would not look weak. “Fine. Since this man rejected my kind offer, I stand with Mrs. Anderson. No company I control will ever hire him.”Grandma nodded, pleased.Alex suddenly laughed. It was a short, sharp laugh that made people jump.Victoria frowned. “What is funny?”Alex stopped laughing and looked at her. “How can you speak for all those companies when you are only a vice CEO?”Victoria blinked. She had not expected him to know that. She

  • THE JOB OFFER

After Grandma finished speaking, the family cheered again. The rich guests who had been watching the whole drama now saw their chance. These were not normal people. They were company owners, managers, and even some billionaires. Grandma had invited them so they would want to work with the Anderson family. One man stood up first. He cleared his throat and spoke in a loud, polite voice.“Mrs. Anderson, it is an honor to be at your party. I agree with your decision completely. That young man does not belong in a good family like yours. I promise he will never get a job in any of my companies. Not even as a cleaner.”He sat down. Grandma smiled and nodded.Another man stood. “I also promise. No job for him in my firm. I will tell all my friends the same thing.”One by one the guests stood and made the same promise. No driving job. No cleaning job. No messenger job. Nothing. They all wanted Grandma to like them. They all wanted her money and her support for their businesses.Alex stood off
