Ethan the manager was still laughing at Alex.
“A broke guy like you can’t decide my job or my life,” he said. “You have no power here.”
Alex just grinned. It was a small, quiet grin that made some people in the room uneasy.
Grandma had heard enough. She stood up from her chair.
“Stop this nonsense, both of you,” she said. Her voice was sharp. “Alex, I’ve had enough of you. You cheated on Sarah. You broke the family’s rules. You will be punished with the golden ruler.”
A loud “Whooo” went through the whole room.
The golden ruler was not a normal stick. It was long, flat, and flexible, the color of real gold. When it hit someone, the pain was terrible. Sometimes it left marks that stayed for weeks. In the Anderson family it was only used for serious crimes. Most people who heard its name started begging right away.
Alex did not beg. He stood still and watched.
Grandma ordered a guard to bring the golden ruler. The guard ran off with a big smile. He still remembered how Alex had thrown him to the floor earlier. This felt like payback.
When the guard came back holding the shiny stick, the room got noisy again. Everyone wanted to be the one to hit Alex. Sarah’s cousin Mia pushed forward. Sarah moved faster. She grabbed the ruler from the guard’s hand.
“I’ll do it,” Sarah said. “He’s my husband. I’m the one he cheated on. I should be the one to punish him.”
Most people nodded. Sarah walked toward Alex, holding the ruler tight. Alex did not move. He just watched her come closer.
Before Sarah could reach him, Ethan jumped forward and snatched the ruler from her hands. He swung it hard at Alex’s face.
Alex stepped to the side. The ruler missed him and snapped back. It hit Ethan straight across the cheek. Ethan yelled in pain. Alex grabbed his arm, twisted it, and pushed him down. Ethan fell flat on the floor, holding his face and groaning.
The room went silent again.
Grandma stood up so fast her chair almost fell. “How dare you! A cheating boy like you deserves every hit! What gave you the right to ask for a divorce after what you did?”
Alex looked at Sarah, then at the people, then at Grandma. His voice stayed calm.
“I never cheated, Grandma. Sarah is the one who—”
Sarah burst into tears again. “He’s lying! He cheated on me! I saw him with another woman!”
Alex shook his head. He felt the anger rising but kept it down. The whole family believed her. Every face in the room looked at him like he was the villain.
“You have no shame,” Grandma continued. “You bring disgrace to this family. I will not allow it.”
Alex looked around once more. That was when he noticed a new person walking through the entrance.
It was the man from the hotel. The same man who had been kissing Sarah. The same man who had laughed while security dragged Alex out.
The man stepped inside and stood next to Sarah like he belonged there.
Alex’s hands curled into fists at his sides. The quiet fire in his chest grew hotter. He had expected lies. He had expected the family to turn against him. But seeing that man walk in so freely made everything feel sharper.
Sarah glanced at the newcomer and then quickly looked away. Grandma had not noticed him yet. She was still focused on Alex.
Alex took a slow breath. The golden ruler still lay on the floor near Ethan’s hand. The manager was still on the ground, face red from the hit. The guards who had lost the earlier fight stayed back, afraid to move again.
Everyone waited to see what Alex would do next. They expected him to beg, or shout, or try to run. He did none of those things.
He simply stood there, eyes fixed on the man from the hotel, and the whole room felt the change in the air. Something bigger was about to happen. The party, the punishment, the lies — all of it was about to collide with the truth that only Alex and that man both knew.
Alex opened his mouth to speak.

THE QUIET AFTER THE STORM
The front door closed behind Alexander Brooks and the two men in dark suits. For a few seconds no one inside the Anderson house moved. The birthday balloons still floated near the ceiling. The cake still sat on the table with candles that had never been lit. The golden ruler lay on the floor where it had fallen earlier. Then the silence broke.Sarah’s legs gave out. She sat down hard on the nearest chair and stared at the empty doorway. Her mouth opened and closed but no words came out. Grandma stayed in her big chair, hands shaking. The color had left her face completely.“Brooks,” Ethan whispered from the floor. He said the name again like it might change if he repeated it enough times. “Alexander Brooks… the real one?”Williams took a step back and almost tripped over a chair. His confident look was gone. He looked at Sarah, then at Grandma, then at the door again.“That cannot be true,” he said, but his voice was weak. “A delivery boy cannot be the Brooks heir. Someone is playing
THE NAME NO ONE EXPECTED
The room stayed quiet for a long time after Ethan’s secrets spilled out. No one knew what to say. Ethan sat on the floor with red eyes and shaking hands. The rich guests who had clapped for him earlier now looked away. Sarah’s face had gone pale. Grandma’s hands gripped the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles turned white.Alex did not move. He just stood in the middle of everyone and waited. One of the older guests finally spoke. “How does a delivery boy know all that about a company manager? That information is private.”Another man nodded. “Yes. Bank accounts. Fake papers. Secret money. How do you know these things, young man?”Alex looked at them one by one. His voice stayed calm and steady.“I pay attention,” he said. “That’s all.”Grandma stood up slowly. Her voice was sharp again, but there was something new in it now — worry mixed with anger.“You will answer properly,” she said. “You are not leaving this house until you explain yourself. Who told you these things? Who are
ONLY IF THEY KNEW
The truth was out. Ethan had lied to everyone about his job. The same people who had congratulated him now looked angry and embarrassed.Grandma turned on him first.“Ethan,” she said, using his real name for the first time that night. “You stood here and lied to all of us. You made us look like fools. Apologize.”Ethan’s face went dark. Being called by his first name already felt like a fall. A minute ago he was “Mr. Manager.” Now he was just Ethan. One of the guests spoke up. “You should get on your knees. After what you did, a simple sorry is not enough.”Ethan looked at Grandma. She did not stop the idea. He felt his last bit of pride break. He dropped to his knees in front of everyone.“I’m sorry,” he said, voice low. “I was ashamed to tell you I lost the job. I didn’t want to look weak. Please forgive me.”Grandma nodded once. “Apology accepted. Stand up.”Ethan stood. His legs felt weak.Alex let out a small laugh. Everyone turned to him.“A while ago you called me a loser,” Al
THE PHONE CALL
Ethan’s phone rang loud in the quiet room. Everyone looked at him. He smiled in a shy way and took the phone from his jacket. When he saw the name on the screen he smiled bigger. It was the caretaker of the delivery company — the man who decided if managers kept their jobs.Ethan answered quickly. “Hello, good day sir.”The voice on the other end was rough. “Good day. I have news for you.”“I’m listening, sir.”“I’m sorry, but we are not renewing your contract. You are no longer the manager starting now. Go collect your things from the office.”The line went dead.Ethan’s face changed for a second. Then he forced a big smile so no one would notice. He could not let the guests, especially Alex, know he had just been fired. If they found out he would lose all respect. Grandma would stop liking him. He would become a nobody. He put the phone away and spoke in a loud, happy voice.“My contract has been extended. I am still the manager. In fact, they gave me a bigger position. I will handl
THE FAKE BOYFRIEND
“No. I am not accepting your offer. Never.”Alex’s words hung in the air. The whole room froze. The woman who had offered him the job stared at him like she could not believe her ears. Her name was Victoria. She was used to people saying yes to her. No one had ever turned her down like this, especially not a man who looked like he had nothing.Sarah’s mouth was open. Grandma’s eyes were wide, but a small smile pulled at her lips. She was happy Alex had refused. It made him look even more stupid in front of everyone.Victoria forced a smile so she would not look weak. “Fine. Since this man rejected my kind offer, I stand with Mrs. Anderson. No company I control will ever hire him.”Grandma nodded, pleased.Alex suddenly laughed. It was a short, sharp laugh that made people jump.Victoria frowned. “What is funny?”Alex stopped laughing and looked at her. “How can you speak for all those companies when you are only a vice CEO?”Victoria blinked. She had not expected him to know that. She
THE JOB OFFER
After Grandma finished speaking, the family cheered again. The rich guests who had been watching the whole drama now saw their chance. These were not normal people. They were company owners, managers, and even some billionaires. Grandma had invited them so they would want to work with the Anderson family. One man stood up first. He cleared his throat and spoke in a loud, polite voice.“Mrs. Anderson, it is an honor to be at your party. I agree with your decision completely. That young man does not belong in a good family like yours. I promise he will never get a job in any of my companies. Not even as a cleaner.”He sat down. Grandma smiled and nodded.Another man stood. “I also promise. No job for him in my firm. I will tell all my friends the same thing.”One by one the guests stood and made the same promise. No driving job. No cleaning job. No messenger job. Nothing. They all wanted Grandma to like them. They all wanted her money and her support for their businesses.Alex stood off
