The room stayed quiet for a long time after Ethan’s secrets spilled out. No one knew what to say. Ethan sat on the floor with red eyes and shaking hands. The rich guests who had clapped for him earlier now looked away. Sarah’s face had gone pale. Grandma’s hands gripped the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles turned white.
Alex did not move. He just stood in the middle of everyone and waited.
One of the older guests finally spoke. “How does a delivery boy know all that about a company manager? That information is private.”
Another man nodded. “Yes. Bank accounts. Fake papers. Secret money. How do you know these things, young man?”
Alex looked at them one by one. His voice stayed calm and steady.
“I pay attention,” he said. “That’s all.”
Grandma stood up slowly. Her voice was sharp again, but there was something new in it now — worry mixed with anger.
“You will answer properly,” she said. “You are not leaving this house until you explain yourself. Who told you these things? Who are you working with?”
Sarah stepped closer to her grandmother. “Grandma is right. You’re scaring people. Just tell us the truth for once.”
Alex looked at Sarah. For a second he almost felt tired. This was the same girl who had called him stupid and poor only yesterday. The same girl who had kissed another man in a hotel room and then cried fake tears in front of the whole family.
He did not raise his voice.
“I already told the truth once tonight,” he said. “No one believed me. Why should tonight be different?”
Williams, the man from the hotel, cleared his throat. He still stood next to Sarah like he belonged there.
“Maybe the boy is just lucky,” Williams said with a small smile. “Or maybe someone is feeding him information so he can make trouble. Either way, he has no place here anymore.”
Mia, Sarah’s cousin, laughed under her breath. “I still think he’s making half of it up. Poor people always try to sound important when they’re cornered.”
Alex turned his head toward her. The laugh stopped.
Just then a phone rang again. This time it was not Ethan’s. It was Victoria’s phone. The woman who had offered Alex the job and then claimed she dated the Brooks family heir.
Victoria pulled the phone out, looked at the screen, and her face changed. She answered quickly and stepped a few feet away from the group.
Everyone watched her. She spoke in a low voice, but parts of the call still reached the room.
“Yes… I’m still at the Anderson house… No, he is here… What? Are you sure?… Okay. I understand.”
She hung up and walked back slowly. Her confident smile was gone. She looked straight at Alex for a long second, then at Grandma.
“I need to leave,” she said. “Something important came up.”
Grandma frowned. “What is more important than this?”
Victoria did not answer. She simply picked up her bag and walked toward the door. Before she left she looked at Alex one more time. There was fear in her eyes now. Real fear.
The door closed behind her.
The room grew restless. Guests started whispering again. Some of them had begun to feel uncomfortable. The delivery boy who was supposed to be finished kept knowing things he should not know. A rich woman had just run out after a mysterious call. Ethan was still on the floor with nothing left.
Grandma sat down hard in her chair. She pointed at Alex.
“You will stay here until morning if you must. I want answers. Real ones.”
Alex took a slow breath. The fire that had started in the hotel room was still burning, but it was colder now. Controlled.
“You want answers?” he said. “Fine. Ask your granddaughter one more time if she really saw me with another woman. Ask Williams what he ordered from the delivery company that day. Ask Ethan who really owns the company he used to manage.”
Williams shifted on his feet. “I already explained everything.”
“You explained a story,” Alex said. “Not the truth.”
Sarah’s voice cracked. “Stop it, Alex. Just stop. You’re only making it worse for yourself.”
Alex looked at her for a long moment. Something in his face softened for half a second, then hardened again.
“I’m not making anything worse,” he said. “I’m just done pretending.”
Outside, car lights flashed across the windows. A black car pulled up to the front of the house. Two men in dark suits got out. They walked toward the entrance like they belonged everywhere they went.
The front door opened. One of the men stepped inside and scanned the room until his eyes landed on Alex.
“Mr. Brooks,” the man said in a clear, respectful voice. “The car is ready. The board is waiting for your decision.”
Every head in the room turned.
Grandma’s mouth opened. Sarah’s eyes went wide. Ethan looked up from the floor like he had seen a ghost. Williams took a step back.
The man in the suit did not look at anyone else. He only looked at Alex.
“Mr. Brooks,” he repeated. “Shall we go?”
Alex gave a small nod. He turned toward the door, then stopped and looked back at the silent crowd one last time.
“My full name is Alexander Brooks,” he said. “I am the only heir of the Brooks family. The companies, the money, the power you all talk about — that is my family. The delivery job was a test. Living in this house was a test. Being treated like dirt was a test.”
He paused. The room was so quiet you could hear the clock on the wall.
“You all failed that test.”
Sarah’s legs seemed to weaken. She reached for the nearest chair. Grandma’s face had lost all color. The rich guests who had promised never to hire him now stared like their whole world had flipped upside down.
Alex walked toward the door. The two men in suits followed close behind him.
Just before he stepped outside he stopped once more.
“The divorce papers will arrive tomorrow morning,” he said without turning around. “Sign them. Or don’t. It no longer matters to me.”
Then he left.
The black car drove away into the night. Inside the Anderson house no one moved for a long time. The birthday decorations still hung on the walls. The food still sat on the tables. The golden ruler still lay on the floor where it had fallen.
But nothing felt the same.
Sarah stood frozen, staring at the empty doorway. Grandma’s hands shook in her lap. Ethan stayed on the floor, whispering the name “Brooks” over and over like it might change if he said it enough times.
Outside, the city lights kept shining. Somewhere far from the Anderson house, Alexander Brooks leaned back in the car seat and closed his eyes for a moment.
The test was over.
The real game had just begun.
And the people who had spent a whole year stepping on a quiet delivery boy were about to learn what it felt like when that boy stood up.

THE QUIET AFTER THE STORM
The front door closed behind Alexander Brooks and the two men in dark suits. For a few seconds no one inside the Anderson house moved. The birthday balloons still floated near the ceiling. The cake still sat on the table with candles that had never been lit. The golden ruler lay on the floor where it had fallen earlier. Then the silence broke.Sarah’s legs gave out. She sat down hard on the nearest chair and stared at the empty doorway. Her mouth opened and closed but no words came out. Grandma stayed in her big chair, hands shaking. The color had left her face completely.“Brooks,” Ethan whispered from the floor. He said the name again like it might change if he repeated it enough times. “Alexander Brooks… the real one?”Williams took a step back and almost tripped over a chair. His confident look was gone. He looked at Sarah, then at Grandma, then at the door again.“That cannot be true,” he said, but his voice was weak. “A delivery boy cannot be the Brooks heir. Someone is playing

ONLY IF THEY KNEW
The truth was out. Ethan had lied to everyone about his job. The same people who had congratulated him now looked angry and embarrassed.Grandma turned on him first.“Ethan,” she said, using his real name for the first time that night. “You stood here and lied to all of us. You made us look like fools. Apologize.”Ethan’s face went dark. Being called by his first name already felt like a fall. A minute ago he was “Mr. Manager.” Now he was just Ethan. One of the guests spoke up. “You should get on your knees. After what you did, a simple sorry is not enough.”Ethan looked at Grandma. She did not stop the idea. He felt his last bit of pride break. He dropped to his knees in front of everyone.“I’m sorry,” he said, voice low. “I was ashamed to tell you I lost the job. I didn’t want to look weak. Please forgive me.”Grandma nodded once. “Apology accepted. Stand up.”Ethan stood. His legs felt weak.Alex let out a small laugh. Everyone turned to him.“A while ago you called me a loser,” Al
THE PHONE CALL
Ethan’s phone rang loud in the quiet room. Everyone looked at him. He smiled in a shy way and took the phone from his jacket. When he saw the name on the screen he smiled bigger. It was the caretaker of the delivery company — the man who decided if managers kept their jobs.Ethan answered quickly. “Hello, good day sir.”The voice on the other end was rough. “Good day. I have news for you.”“I’m listening, sir.”“I’m sorry, but we are not renewing your contract. You are no longer the manager starting now. Go collect your things from the office.”The line went dead.Ethan’s face changed for a second. Then he forced a big smile so no one would notice. He could not let the guests, especially Alex, know he had just been fired. If they found out he would lose all respect. Grandma would stop liking him. He would become a nobody. He put the phone away and spoke in a loud, happy voice.“My contract has been extended. I am still the manager. In fact, they gave me a bigger position. I will handl
THE FAKE BOYFRIEND
“No. I am not accepting your offer. Never.”Alex’s words hung in the air. The whole room froze. The woman who had offered him the job stared at him like she could not believe her ears. Her name was Victoria. She was used to people saying yes to her. No one had ever turned her down like this, especially not a man who looked like he had nothing.Sarah’s mouth was open. Grandma’s eyes were wide, but a small smile pulled at her lips. She was happy Alex had refused. It made him look even more stupid in front of everyone.Victoria forced a smile so she would not look weak. “Fine. Since this man rejected my kind offer, I stand with Mrs. Anderson. No company I control will ever hire him.”Grandma nodded, pleased.Alex suddenly laughed. It was a short, sharp laugh that made people jump.Victoria frowned. “What is funny?”Alex stopped laughing and looked at her. “How can you speak for all those companies when you are only a vice CEO?”Victoria blinked. She had not expected him to know that. She
THE JOB OFFER
After Grandma finished speaking, the family cheered again. The rich guests who had been watching the whole drama now saw their chance. These were not normal people. They were company owners, managers, and even some billionaires. Grandma had invited them so they would want to work with the Anderson family. One man stood up first. He cleared his throat and spoke in a loud, polite voice.“Mrs. Anderson, it is an honor to be at your party. I agree with your decision completely. That young man does not belong in a good family like yours. I promise he will never get a job in any of my companies. Not even as a cleaner.”He sat down. Grandma smiled and nodded.Another man stood. “I also promise. No job for him in my firm. I will tell all my friends the same thing.”One by one the guests stood and made the same promise. No driving job. No cleaning job. No messenger job. Nothing. They all wanted Grandma to like them. They all wanted her money and her support for their businesses.Alex stood off
