His eyes moved across the table before settling on Vanessa.

For a moment, he studied her face.

"Have we met before?" he asked.

Vanessa was caught off guard.

"I don't think so."

"Strange. You look familiar."

She offered a polite smile.

"Perhaps you've seen me somewhere."

"Perhaps."

Damian extended his hand.

"Damian Sterling."

Vanessa shook it.

"Vanessa."

"Beautiful name."

"Thank you."

He smiled slightly before glancing at the others.

"Enjoy your evening, ladies."

Then he continued toward the corridor.

Patricia waited until he was out of hearing distance before grabbing Vanessa's arm.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?"

"He said you look familiar!"

"He was just being polite."

"Vanessa, please. You have to stop acting as though you don't understand these things."

Chloe laughed.

"Leave her alone. Maybe she's madly in love with her broke boyfriend."

The words made Vanessa's smile disappear.

Patricia noticed immediately.

"Oh, come on. Don't tell me you're thinking about Adrian again."

Vanessa picked up her glass and took a sip.

"Can we please enjoy our evening without mentioning him?"

"Fine," Patricia replied. "But you need to think seriously about your future."

Vanessa placed the glass back on the table.

She was beginning to realise that she could not keep avoiding the questions that had been troubling her.

What did she truly want from life?

Was love enough?

And how long was she prepared to wait for the future Adrian kept promising?

She had no answers yet.

But for the first time that evening, she found herself wishing she could experience a life completely different from the one she had known.

---

Several minutes later, Vanessa excused herself from the table and walked toward the ladies' room.

After washing her hands, she stood before the mirror and examined her reflection.

She adjusted her hair, straightened her blouse, and practised a smile.

Then she stopped.

"What am I doing?" she whispered to herself.

She was in a beautiful restaurant surrounded by people who appeared to have everything she wanted, yet she could not stop thinking about the problems waiting for her at home.

She took a deep breath.

I love Adrian.

she muttered within

But she was no longer certain that love alone could keep her satisfied.

Her phone vibrated inside her handbag.

Vanessa pulled it out and glanced at the screen.

It was a message from Adrian.

Adrian: Have you eaten? I can prepare something when you get back. Please let me know you're okay.

She stared at the message.

For a moment, she could almost hear his voice asking whether she had eaten. She imagined him sitting alone in their apartment, probably wondering when she would return.

Her thumb hovered over the keyboard.

She could have replied that she was fine.

She could have told him she would be home later.

Instead, she locked the phone and slipped it back into her handbag.

She was not ready to speak to him.

Not tonight.

Vanessa looked at herself in the mirror one last time before leaving the restroom.

When she returned to the table, Patricia was telling a story that had everyone laughing.

Vanessa took her seat and joined the conversation.

For the next hour, she tried to forget about the argument, the apartment, and the man waiting for her at home.

But the unanswered message remained on her phone.

And the promise Adrian had made about their future continued to echo in her mind.
