By the time Adrian returned to Harrison Cole's office, the afternoon sun was shining brightly over the city.

He parked the black sedan in its usual spot, checked the envelope on the passenger seat, and stepped out of the vehicle.

The documents had been delivered safely, and he had received confirmation from the office that everything was in order.

It was a small assignment, but Adrian was satisfied.

Every day he worked without complaint, hoping that his efforts would eventually lead to something better. He had no powerful connections, no wealthy relatives he could call for help, and no savings large enough to change his circumstances overnight.

All he had was his job and his determination to make something of himself.

He was about to enter the building when his phone rang.

Vanessa.

Adrian's face brightened immediately.

He answered the call.

"Hello, baby."

"Where are you?" Vanessa asked.

"I'm at work. I just returned from delivering some documents. Is everything all right?"

There was a brief silence.

"Did you send me a message this morning?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Yes. I wanted to know how you were doing."

"just saw it."

"Oh, okay. I was beginning to wonder whether you were still angry with me."

Vanessa did not respond to that.

Instead, she asked, "What time will you finish work today?"

Adrian glanced toward the building.

"I'm not sure yet. Mr. Harrison said there might be some additional assignments. Why?"

"I need to go somewhere this evening."

"All right. Where do you want to go?"

"I haven't decided yet."

Adrian waited for her to explain, but she said nothing further.

"Do you need me to pick you up somewhere?" he asked.

"No, Adrian. Forget it."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"Vanessa, about last night—"

"I have to go."

"Wait, baby. Please. I don't want us to keep fighting."

"I'm not fighting with you."

"Then can we talk properly when I get home?"

"We'll see."

Before Adrian could say anything else, the call ended.

He stared at his phone.

Although the conversation had been brief, he was glad she had called. At least she had not completely shut him out.

He slipped the phone into his pocket and returned to the building.

He would speak with her later.

For now, he needed to concentrate on his work.

---

Inside the office, Harrison Cole was seated behind his large desk, reviewing several documents with his personal assistant.

Adrian knocked on the open door.

"Sir, the documents have been delivered."

Harrison looked up.

"Good. Did they confirm receipt?"

"Yes, sir."

"Excellent. Put the vehicle keys on the table. I won't need the car for another hour."

Adrian placed the keys where Harrison had indicated.

"Is there anything else, sir?"

Harrison leaned back in his chair.

"Actually, there is something I wanted to discuss with you."

Adrian straightened slightly.

"Yes, sir?"

"About the additional assignments I mentioned this morning. I've spoken to my assistant, and we may need you to drive some of our business associates over the next few weeks."

"That would be fine, sir."

"Some of these assignments will require you to work outside your normal hours. You'll be compensated separately, of course, but I expect complete professionalism."

"Understood, sir."

Harrison studied him.

"You seem eager."

Adrian smiled politely.

"I appreciate the opportunity, sir."

"Good. Many people want more money, but not everyone is willing to put in the extra work required to earn it."

" Are you praising me or you are mocking me??"

Adrian said boldly to his boss
