Chapter Ten: The Burning Vow

Xavier stood on the beach of the Isle of the Forgotten, his body humming with newfound power. The Trials had changed him. He could feel it in every fiber of his being, in the way the storm energy flowed through him like a second heartbeat. He was no longer the broken man who had been dragged through the streets. He was something more. Something unstoppable.

"You look different," Alaric said, approaching him from the ship. "Stronger. More confident."

Xavier turned to face the old sailor. "I feel different. I feel like I finally understand who I am and what I am meant to do."

"And what is that?"

Xavier looked out at the horizon. "I am going to destroy the empire. I am going to tear down everything my uncle has built and build something new in its place."

Alaric nodded slowly. "That is a big task for one man."

"I will not be doing it alone." Xavier turned back toward the temple. "Aurum promised me an army. Ancient dragons who have been sleeping for centuries. They will fight with me."

Alaric's eyes widened. "Ancient dragons? You are talking about waking an army of mythical beasts?"

"That is exactly what I am talking about."

Xavier walked back toward the temple, his steps steady and sure. The doors swung open as he approached, and he stepped inside. Aurum was waiting for him, its massive form filling the hall.

"The dragons are ready," Aurum said. "They have been waiting for a Sovereign to lead them. They will follow you into battle."

Xavier nodded. "How many are there?"

"Hundreds," Aurum said. "Enough to bring the empire to its knees."

Xavier felt a surge of hope. "Then let us wake them. Let us show the empire what happens when they push a Sovereign too far."

The awakening was a sight to behold.

Xavier stood in the center of the temple as Aurum called out to the sleeping dragons. The ground began to shake, and the walls started to crack. From the depths of the temple, the sounds of ancient beasts stirring echoed through the halls.

One by one, the dragons emerged. They were massive, their scales shimmering with colors Xavier had never seen before. They bowed their heads as they passed him, acknowledging him as their leader.

"I am Xavier Knight," he said, his voice echoing through the hall. "I am the Storm Sovereign. And I am here to lead you to war."

The dragons roared in response, a sound that shook the very foundations of the Isle. Xavier felt the power of their voices surge through him, filling him with confidence.

"To the ships," he commanded. "We sail at dawn."

The journey back to the mainland was faster than the journey out. The dragons flew above the ship, their massive wings blotting out the sun. Xavier stood at the bow, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

"You have changed," Sera said, appearing beside him. "You are not the same man who stumbled into my camp."

Xavier turned to look at her. "I have had to change. The old Xavier would have died in that cell. The new Xavier is going to win this war."

Sera smiled. "I like the new Xavier."

"Good. Because he is not going anywhere."

They reached the mainland three days later. The dragons landed on the coast, their massive forms causing the ground to tremble. Xavier stood at the head of his army, his eyes fixed on the capital in the distance.

"Ready?" Sera asked.

Xavier nodded. "Ready."

They marched on the capital at dawn.

The Inquisition was waiting for them, their soldiers lined up in formation outside the city walls. Lord Caspian stood at the front, his face twisted with rage.

"You think you can defeat me with a few dragons?" he shouted. "You think you can bring down the empire?"

Xavier stepped forward, his voice carrying across the battlefield. "I do not think, uncle. I know. The empire is built on lies and cruelty. It is time for it to fall."

He raised his hand, and the dragons surged forward.

The battle was brutal. The Inquisition fought with everything they had, their swords and arrows bouncing off the dragons' scales. But they were outmatched. The dragons tore through their ranks like wildfire, their fire and lightning devastating everything in their path.

Xavier fought at the front, his body crackling with storm energy. He was unstoppable, a force of nature that nothing could stand against. He cut through the Inquisitors like they were made of paper, his power growing with every enemy he felled.

"This ends now," Caspian shouted, charging at Xavier with his sword raised.

Xavier met him head-on. Their blades clashed, and the force of the impact sent shockwaves through the battlefield.

"You are still a fool," Caspian snarled. "You think you can save the world? You are just a broken boy playing at being a hero."

Xavier's eyes blazed with fire. "I am not trying to save the world. I am trying to destroy yours."

He lunged forward, his blade finding its mark. Caspian staggered back, his eyes wide with shock and pain.

"You... you cannot..." he gasped.

Xavier stood over him, his chest heaving. "It is over, uncle. The empire is done."

Caspian collapsed to his knees, his face pale. "You have won this battle. But the war is far from over."

Xavier shook his head. "No. The war is over. You lost the moment you tried to break me."

He raised his hand, the storm energy crackling at his fingertips. But before he could strike, a voice cut through the chaos.

"Xavier, wait!"

He turned to find Zara running toward him, her face streaked with tears. She skidded to a stop in front of him, her hands raised.

"Please," she said. "Do not do this. Do not become the monster he wanted you to be."

Xavier stared at her, his heart pounding. "He killed my father. He destroyed my family. He deserves to die."

"Maybe he does," Zara said. "But if you kill him, you are no better than him. You will be the same as every other tyrant who ever sat on the throne."

Xavier's hand trembled. The storm energy was burning in his veins, begging to be released. It would be so easy. So satisfying.

But she was right.

He lowered his hand.

"You are right," he said. "I am not going to kill him. I am going to let him rot in a cell. Just like he did to me."

He turned to his army. "Take him away."

The dragons descended on Caspian, their massive forms surrounding him. He was dragged away, his screams echoing across the battlefield.

Xavier watched him go, a strange sense of peace settling over him. It was over. Finally, it was over.

Zara stepped closer, her eyes searching his face. "What happens now?"

Xavier looked at her, then at his army, then at the city in the distance. "Now we build something new. Something better. The empire is going to change, Zara. And I am going to be the one to change it."

She smiled, a soft, hopeful smile. "I believe you."

Xavier turned back to the capital. The war was over. The real work was just beginning.

And he was ready.

He had grown up in this place. He knew its secrets better than anyone. But knowing and doing were two different things. He slipped through a service entrance, his body pressed against the cold stone. The corridors were empty, the guards distracted by a disturbance Sera's people had created on the other side of the city. It was the perfect distraction. Every creak of the wood made him flinch, every distant shout made his heart race."There," Sera said, pointing to a battered old ship tied to the end of the pier. "The Stormchaser. That is Alaric's vessel."Xavier studied the ship. It looked like it had seen better days, its sails patched and its hull scarred from countless storms. But there was something about it that felt right. Something that called to him."He is not going to be happy to see us," Sera warned. "Alaric does not like visitors. Especially not ones who bring trouble.""Then I will make sure I do not look like trouble," Xavier said.Sera laughed. "With that face? You look like trouble walking."They climbed aboard the ship, their footsteps echoing on the wooden deck. A grizzled old man emerged fro
