Chapter Twenty: The Crown of Thorns

The wedding was a small affair.

Xavier had insisted on it. He did not want a grand ceremony with thousands of guests and months of preparation. He wanted something simple, something real. Just his closest friends and the woman he loved.

"I cannot believe you talked me into this," Zara said, adjusting her dress. It was a simple white gown, elegant but understated. "I was expecting a palace full of nobles."

Xavier laughed, adjusting his own tunic. "And I was expecting to be alone forever. We both have to make compromises."

She smiled, a soft, radiant smile. "I love you."

"I love you too."

The ceremony was held in the small garden behind the palace, surrounded by flowers and trees. The sun was shining, the sky clear and blue. Sera officiated, her voice steady and warm.

"We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of two souls," she said. "Two souls who have been through hell and back, who have faced impossible odds and emerged victorious."

Xavier looked at Zara, his heart full. She was beautiful, more beautiful than he had ever seen her. The white gown suited her perfectly, and her silver-blonde hair was loose, falling around her shoulders like a waterfall of light. Her blue eyes were shimmering with tears, but she was smiling, a smile that reached deep into his soul.

"Xavier," Sera said. "Do you take Zara to be your wife?"

"I do," he said, his voice steady. "I take her to be my partner, my ally, my home. I will love her and protect her, through the good times and the bad. I will stand by her side, no matter what challenges we face. I will be her strength when she is weak, and she will be mine. I promise to cherish her, to honor her, and to build a life with her that is worthy of everything we have sacrificed."

Zara's tears were flowing freely now, but she was still smiling.

"Zara. Do you take Xavier to be your husband?"

Zara took a deep breath, her voice filled with emotion. "I do. I take him to be my partner, my ally, my home. I will love him and protect him, through the good times and the bad. I will stand by his side, no matter what challenges we face. I will be his strength when he is weak, and he will be mine. I promise to cherish him, to honor him, and to build a life with him that is worthy of everything we have sacrificed."

Sera smiled. "Then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Xavier leaned in and kissed her, a soft, gentle kiss that promised a lifetime of love. The storm energy swirled around them, warm and bright, as if even the dragons were celebrating.

The reception was small and intimate. They ate and drank and danced, celebrating the beginning of a new chapter. Xavier looked around the room, at the faces of his friends, and felt a surge of gratitude.

Sera was there, her eyes shining with pride. Aldric was there, his face finally free of the guilt that had haunted him for so long. Alaric was there, the old sailor who had risked everything to help them. And Tempest was there, a presence in Xavier's mind, silent but watchful.

"Thank you," Xavier said, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you all for being here. Thank you for everything you have done. Without you, I would not be standing here today."

Sera raised her glass. "To Xavier and Zara. May their love endure forever."

"To Xavier and Zara!" the crowd echoed.

The night passed in a blur of laughter and joy. Xavier and Zara danced together, their bodies moving in perfect sync. The storm energy swirled around them, warm and bright, as if even the dragons were celebrating.

"I never thought I would be here," Xavier admitted. "I never thought I would be happy."

Zara looked into his eyes. "You deserve to be happy. You have earned it. After everything you have been through, everything you have sacrificed, you deserve this moment."

He kissed her again, deep and passionate. "I love you."

"I love you too."

The night ended with a quiet walk through the garden, the stars twinkling above them. Xavier held Zara's hand, his heart full. The flowers were in full bloom, their fragrance filling the air. The sound of music drifted from the palace, soft and distant.

"What happens now?" she asked. "What comes next?"

Xavier was silent for a moment. He had been so focused on survival, on fighting, that he had never really thought about the future. But standing there, with Zara at his side, he realized that the future was not something to be feared. It was something to be embraced.

"Whatever comes," he said. "We face it together. We have faced the empire. We have faced the darkness. We have faced death itself. We can face anything."

Zara smiled. "Together."

They walked back to the palace, their steps slow and steady. The world was still healing, still rebuilding. There would be challenges ahead, obstacles to overcome. But they would face them together.

As they entered their chambers, Xavier felt a wave of emotion wash over him. This was real. This was happening. He was married to the woman he loved, the woman who had stood by him through everything.

"What are you thinking about?" Zara asked, her voice soft.

Xavier turned to look at her. "I am thinking about how lucky I am. How lucky I am to have you. How lucky I am to be alive."

She stepped closer, her hand resting on his chest. "You are not lucky. You are brave. You are strong. You are everything I ever wanted."

He kissed her, deep and slow. The storm energy crackled around them, responding to his emotions. He pulled her closer, his hands finding her waist.

"Zara," he whispered. "I love you."

"I know," she whispered back. "I have always known."

The night passed in quiet intimacy, a celebration of their love and their future. Xavier held Zara in his arms, feeling her heartbeat against his chest. The storm energy was calm, a gentle hum beneath his skin.

The Exile Dragon King had found his queen.

And their story was just beginning.

The next morning, Xavier woke to the sound of birds singing outside the window. Zara was still asleep beside him, her hair spread across the pillow like a silver halo. He watched her for a long moment, marveling at how beautiful she was.

"You are staring," she said, her eyes still closed.

"I am admiring," he corrected.

She opened her eyes and smiled. "That is the same thing."

"No, it is not. Admiring is respectful. Staring is creepy."

She laughed, a soft, warm sound. "You are impossible."

"You have told me that before."

"And I will tell you again."

They spent the morning together, enjoying the quiet peace of their new life. No battles. No wars. Just them.

Later that day, Xavier walked through the city. The streets were bustling with activity, the markets filled with merchants and shoppers. Children ran through the streets, laughing and playing. It was a scene of peace and prosperity, a world that had risen from the ashes of the empire.

"Xavier!" a voice called out. He turned to see Sera approaching, her face flushed with excitement.

"What is it?" he asked.

"I have news," she said. "Good news. The council has officially recognized you as the king of the new kingdom. The Exile Dragon King. They want to crown you."

Xavier felt his heart sink. He had been dreading this moment. He did not want to be a king. He did not want the power or the responsibility.

"I cannot," he said. "I told you. I am not built for it."

"You are the only one who can do it," Sera said. "The people need a leader. They need someone they can trust. That is you."

Xavier was silent for a long moment. He thought about everything he had been through, everything he had sacrificed. He thought about the people who had died to make this moment possible.

"Okay," he said finally. "I will do it. But not as a king. As something else."

"What?"

"Call me what you want. But I will not sit on a throne. I will walk among the people. I will be their protector, not their ruler."

Sera smiled. "That is exactly what they need."

The crowning ceremony was simple. Xavier stood at the steps of the palace, looking out at the crowd that had gathered. Thousands of people filled the square, their faces filled with hope and joy.

"People of the new kingdom," he said, his voice carrying across the square. "I am not your king. I am your protector. I am your ally. I will fight for you. I will defend you. And I will never abandon you."

The crowd cheered, their voices rising like thunder.

Xavier looked out at them, his heart full. He had finally found his place in the world.

The Exile Dragon King had come home.
