“He left you two.”

The words hung in the red-lit archive.

Adrian kept the pistol aimed at the intruder’s head.

Elias stood several feet away, his weapon lowered but ready.

For one second, no one moved.

Then the countdown on the wall changed.

00:26:58

Vanessa had less than twenty-seven minutes left.

Adrian’s focus sharpened.

“Name,” he said.

The intruder smiled.

“Lucian Ward.”

Elias’s face tightened.

“My son was named Lucian.”

“I know.”

“He died in the Vale purge.”

Lucian slowly turned his eyes toward him.

“You saw a body.”

“I buried you.”

“No. You buried what they wanted you to find.”

Elias’s grip tightened around his weapon.

Adrian watched both men.

Same eyes.

Same jawline.

Same controlled stillness.

But resemblance alone proved nothing.

“Ghost,” Adrian said, “verify his identity.”

The archive lights flickered.

A red scanning beam moved over Lucian’s face.

Lucian did not flinch.

“Biometric comparison in progress,” Ghost replied.

Elias took one step forward.

“Who kept you alive?”

Lucian laughed softly.

“You still think survival is mercy.”

“Answer me.”

“House Vale did.”

Silence struck the room.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“My family?”

Lucian looked at him.

“Not your father. Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Alexander Vale built more than an empire. He built systems inside systems. Plans hidden beneath other plans. People prepared for wars they never agreed to fight.”

Elias’s expression turned cold.

“Who trained you?”

Lucian glanced at the broken-crown pin fastened to his coat.

“The people who survived your loyalty.”

Adrian followed his gaze.

“The Broken Crown.”

Lucian smiled.

“So you learn quickly.”

“Who are they?”

“Those who understood that the Twelve Thrones were never meant to belong to one bloodline.”

Elias raised his gun.

“They are traitors.”

Lucian looked at him almost sadly.

“You still use Alexander’s words.”

Ghost interrupted.

“Biometric analysis complete.”

Everyone turned toward the screen.

PATERNAL MATCH: ELIAS WARD — 99.97%

Elias stopped breathing.

Lucian’s smile vanished.

For the first time, something real appeared in his face.

Pain.

Then it was gone.

Adrian lowered the pistol slightly, but not enough to offer trust.

“He is your son,” Adrian said.

Elias stared at Lucian.

“I watched you die.”

“No,” Lucian replied. “You watched Alexander choose which truth you were allowed to survive.”

The countdown changed again.

00:26:12

Adrian stepped between them.

“Whatever happened eighteen years ago can wait.”

Lucian looked toward the screen showing Vanessa.

“She cannot.”

“You know where Damian is holding her.”

“I know where he was holding her when the transmission began.”

“Then tell me.”

Lucian shook his head.

“Give me the Vale Core.”

Elias lifted his weapon again.

“You came here for it.”

“I came here to keep it away from Damian.”

“That does not make you an ally,” Adrian said.

“No. It makes me the only person in this room who understands what happens if he gets it.”

Adrian glanced toward the glass chamber.

The black component remained inside, small enough to fit in one hand.

“What happens?”

Lucian’s voice lost its mockery.

“The Vale Core was not designed only for engines.”

Ghost said nothing.

Adrian noticed.

“What else does it power?”

Lucian looked toward the ceiling.

“Ask your father.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Ghost.”

“Information restricted.”

“Override it.”

“Authorization insufficient.”

Adrian raised the black coin marked with the number one.

“You told me this was my test. Vanessa is part of it now. Give me the information.”

The room went quiet.

Then Ghost replied.

“The Vale Core was designed as a universal adaptive energy regulator.”

“Meaning?”

“It can stabilize extreme power output across multiple systems.”

Lucian continued before Ghost could.

“Vehicles. Weapons. Aircraft. Defense networks. Anything that generates more heat and pressure than conventional technology can survive.”

Elias looked at the component.

“A control heart.”

“Yes,” Lucian said. “And Marcus Vane has spent eighteen years trying to recreate it.”

Adrian remembered the leaked Vane engine designs.

The cooling flaws.

The unstable pressure channels.

Marcus had not created a revolutionary engine.

He had created an incomplete copy.

“Damian works for Vane,” Adrian said.

Lucian looked at him.

“Damian works for whoever offers him power. Right now, that happens to be Marcus.”

The screen shifted.

Vanessa remained tied to the chair.

Damian walked in front of the camera.

“Twenty-five minutes, Adrian.”

He held up a phone.

A new image appeared beside him.

An industrial warehouse.

Steel beams.

Yellow hazard markings.

A faded company logo on the wall.

BLACKTHORN INDUSTRIAL STORAGE

Elias recognized it.

“Dock Nine.”

Adrian turned.

“You know the place?”

“It belonged to Damian’s father before Blackthorn consolidated the district.”

Lucian shook his head.

“Too obvious.”

Damian smiled on the screen, as though he could hear them.

“To make this fair, I will give you a choice.”

Two live feeds appeared.

Vanessa in one.

A group of workers tied together in another.

At least twelve people.

Men and women in factory uniforms.

Adrian stared at the second feed.

“What is this?”

Damian spread his arms.

“The employees from the Vane Motors prototype facility.”

Elias cursed.

Damian continued.

“One location holds the woman you care about.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“I don’t care about her.”

Vanessa looked at the camera.

Even bruised, she managed a faint smile.

“Liar.”

Damian laughed.

“The other location holds people who know why Vane Motors’ new engine keeps failing.”

Adrian looked closely at the workers.

One older man had blood on his shirt.

Another woman struggled against her restraints.

“Bring me the Vale Core,” Damian said, “and I will tell you which location is real.”

The transmission cut.

The countdown remained.

00:24:51

Adrian turned to Lucian.

“You said you know where Vanessa was.”

“I know the route Damian’s men used.”

“Can you track it?”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

Lucian looked toward the Vale Core.

“After you give me that.”

Adrian raised the pistol again.

“No.”

Lucian’s eyes hardened.

“You have twenty-four minutes.”

“And you have one bullet between your eyes if you waste another second.”

Elias looked at Adrian.

For the first time, there was no doubt in his expression.

Only recognition.

The boy in front of him was no longer simply reacting.

He was choosing.

Lucian studied Adrian, then slowly reached inside his coat.

Elias aimed immediately.

“Careful.”

Lucian removed a small data device and tossed it onto the floor.

It slid to Adrian’s feet.

“Damian’s convoy crossed the river six minutes ago,” Lucian said. “One vehicle split north. Two went east.”

“Which carried Vanessa?”

“I do not know.”

Adrian picked up the device.

A map appeared on its screen.

Two routes flashed.

The northern route led to Dock Nine.

The eastern route led to an abandoned rail facility.

“Two locations,” Adrian said.

“Exactly.”

Elias looked at the countdown.

“We cannot reach both.”

Adrian turned toward the Vale Core.

His mind moved through the problem.

Damian expected him to choose.

Vanessa or the workers.

Personal loyalty or strategic value.

That was not the real trap.

The real trap was making him believe there were only two choices.

Adrian looked up at the cameras.

“Ghost, access city traffic systems.”

“Authorization insufficient.”

“Access Blackthorn private security.”

“Authorization insufficient.”

“Access the Vale transport network.”

A pause.

“Partial network remains active.”

Elias looked toward the screen.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Show me everything still under Vale control.”

A city map filled the wall.

Most routes were dark.

Then one line turned green.

An underground freight tunnel.

It connected the bunker to both Dock Nine and the abandoned rail facility.

Lucian’s expression changed.

He had not known.

“How fast?” Adrian asked.

“Using the prototype transit platform, estimated arrival to the junction: seven minutes.”

“Can it reach both locations?”

“Not simultaneously.”

Adrian stared at the map.

“Then we split.”

Elias stepped forward.

“No.”

Adrian turned.

“You go to Dock Nine.”

“I am not leaving you.”

“That was not a request.”

Elias’s jaw tightened.

Lucian almost smiled.

Adrian pointed at him.

“You go east.”

Lucian’s amusement disappeared.

“You trust me with the woman?”

“I trust that you want the Core badly enough to keep her alive.”

“And you?”

“I stay here.”

Both men stared at him.

Elias spoke first.

“Why?”

Adrian looked toward the Vale Core.

“Because Damian does not know I can see through machines.”

He placed his hand against the glass.

The mechanical network exploded inside his mind again.

Heat.

Pressure.

Current.

Failure points.

But this time he pushed deeper.

Beyond the Core.

Beyond the prototype.

Through the archive systems connected to it.

The screens flickered.

Ghost’s voice filled the room.

“Unauthorized neural synchronization detected.”

Elias moved toward him.

“Adrian, stop.”

Adrian did not hear him.

He could see the city’s transport grid.

Traffic cameras.

Industrial access systems.

Old Vale tunnels.

And one moving signal carrying the same thermal signature as the Vale Core.

Not in the warehouse.

Not at the rail facility.

Somewhere else.

A third location.

Adrian pulled his hand away.

Blood ran from his nose.

The screen changed.

A black vehicle appeared on a hidden service road beneath the city.

Inside it sat Damian.

Beside him was Vanessa.

The woman shown at Dock Nine was a recorded loop.

Adrian wiped the blood away.

“He lied about both locations.”

Lucian stared at the screen.

“Where is he going?”

Ghost enlarged the route.

The vehicle was heading toward the center of the city.

Toward the tallest building on the map.

Blackthorn Tower.

Adrian’s eyes became cold.

“He isn’t waiting for me to bring him the Vale Core.”

The final route appeared in red.

Damian was heading directly above the bunker.

Adrian looked at Elias.

“He’s coming to take it himself.”

Station One slammed shut. The sound traveled through the underground chamber like thunder. Then everything stopped. No whispers. No screaming machinery. No Oracle. Only silence. Adrian remained connected to the interface. Golden lines still covered his arm. His breathing came slowly. Painfully. “Adrian?” Mira’s voice. He heard her. That alone felt important. “Adrian, look at me.” He opened his eyes. Mira stood several feet away. Alive. Real. Not a possibility. Not a memory. Her. Adrian looked around. Cassian was on one knee beside the mechanical lock. Lucian leaned against the wall. Elena remained connected to the fading observer circuit. Alexander stood opposite her. And Caelum— was gone. “Where is he?” Mira understood. “Caelum?” Adrian nodded. Ghost answered. “Distributed observer architecture remains active. Twelfth observer signature has dispersed across surviving Crown nodes.” “He survived?” “Definition unclear.” Adrian hated that phrase. “

  • ch-42 Seven Minutes of Truth

Pain did not come first. Memory did. The moment Adrian touched the interface, every locked door inside his mind opened at once. He was four. Nathan’s voice came through a speaker. “Can you hear me?” He was five. Alexander watched through glass while machines mapped his brain. He was six. Mira sat beneath a laboratory table beside him, whispering that if they stayed quiet, maybe the adults would forget they existed. He was seven. Station One opened. Then Adrian remembered dying. Not almost dying. Dying. His heart stopped. His body became still. Celeste screamed at the medical team. Elena stood behind the glass with blood on her hands. Rebecca held a crying Mira away from the room. Alexander was nowhere. The monitors went black. Nathan’s voice filled the laboratory. “There is another possibility.” Elena looked up. “What?” “A version where his heart did not stop.” “No.” “Elena—” “He is my son!” Nathan’s answer was brutally quiet. “And he is dead.” Station

  • ch-40 The Night House Vale Fell

Whatever Adrian had forgotten, both his parents were afraid of him remembering it. That was enough. He looked at Elena first. “Tell me.” She said nothing. “Now.” Alexander stepped forward. “Adrian, this is not the time.” Adrian turned toward him. “You've both used that sentence my entire life.” The black door shifted behind them. Three centimeters. Maybe slightly more. Oracle whispered through the gap. They will lie. Adrian didn't look at it. “Stay out of this.” A soft laugh came from beyond Station One. I already know the answer. “Good for you.” Then Adrian looked back at his mother. “Elena.” Her eyes were wet. “House Vale did not fall in one night.” “That's not what I asked.” “No.” “But it matters.” “Then make it matter quickly.” She flinched. Adrian felt cruel. He also felt tired of being protected by lies. Elena took a breath. “Alexander had already lost control of several internal systems before the attack. The Empty Throne had turned against him.

“Your body.” Adrian stared at Alexander. For a second, the words made no sense. Then they made too much. “My body is standing here.” Alexander’s gaze remained fixed on the small hand reaching through the gap. “Your current body.” Adrian’s voice hardened. “Explain.” Behind the black door, the child whispered again. Adrian… Mira tightened her grip on his arm. “Don't go closer.” He didn't. Not yet. Alexander stepped toward the door. “Thirty-one years ago, Station One could move physical matter between possible states. Nathan used it to save me from the Crown Chamber.” “You said that already.” “What I didn't tell you is that the process had been tested before.” Adrian understood. “On me.” Alexander nodded. Elena went pale. “No.” Alexander looked at her. “You didn't know.” “Don't.” “Elena—” “Don't tell me what I knew about my own son.” “You knew what happened at Center Nine.” “Yes.” “You didn't know what happened afterward.” Adrian stepped between them. “St

“Alexander.” Adrian tightened his grip on the radio. Nobody in the room moved. Cassian’s face changed first. “That’s impossible.” Nathan’s weak voice crackled through the speaker. “Tonight has made that word useless.” Vanessa quietly nodded. “Finally, someone said it.” Adrian ignored her. “Which Alexander?” Silence. Then Nathan answered. “I don't know.” “Ghost?” The isolated console flickered. “King Protocol cognitive signature is no longer detectable through available local records.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “When did we lose it?” “During your direct cognitive contact.” When Alexander had removed the lock from Adrian’s Anti-King. When he had said— Goodbye, son. Adrian looked toward Celeste. “Could King Protocol have transferred through me?” “No.” “Marcus?” She hesitated. “The bridge passed through his Finance interface.” Marcus immediately looked at his hand. “But Finance is clean.” “Now,” Adrian said. Marcus understood. King Protocol might have used t
