What kind of girl is Arden? Why is my mom so terrified of her joining hands with the Morrises? What dark secrets did she and the Morrises drag from the depths of our family’s past? And why did my mother insist that my dad died before I was born? The questions swirl in Brian's mind, each one a sharp thorn that digs deeper with every passing moment. Mr. Morris even showed me pictures of Arden and me alongside our parents, and I can't shake the feeling that these images hold the key to understanding the tangled web of my family's history.

As the weight of these thoughts presses down on him, Brian feels a throbbing pain in his head. He doesn't know how to navigate the chaos that has become his life.

Why did his mom instruct that man to erase anything linking Arden to the Morris family? What kind of woman is my mother, and how many lives has she ruined to ensure that I remain distanced from Arden? How did she acquire the funds to pay off those who work for her, keeping the truth buried beneath layers of deceit? Brian can’t help but ponder these questions, each one more unsettling than the last.

Determined to escape the burden of his thoughts, Brian decides to rest his head before heading out to pick up his client. The bed is soft and inviting, almost too comfortable. He drifts off, but not for long.

A shrill ring pierces the silence; it’s his boss.

“Brian, why are you still sleeping? You’re five minutes late!” his boss barks before hanging up, leaving no room for excuses.

Brian barely has time to freshen up. “Good thing I don’t have body odor,” he mutters, rushing out the door.

In his haste, he collides with Claire, his sister. “I’m sorry for bumping into you, Claire! I hope you understand!” he shouts, not waiting for a response.

“Be careful, Brian. You're the only sibling I have, the only one who cares about us,” Claire says, her voice laced with a manic edge. “Don’t worry; I’ll make Mom, the Morrises, and the Maxwells pay. I’ll show them what it’s like to grow up with nothing to eat!”

Brian’s heart sinks at the thought of his sister’s words, but he brushes it off. He needs to focus on the job ahead.

Claire’s laughter rings hollow in his ears. “I pity Mom; she’s been standing in my way for more than three years, cleaning any path that leads to the Morris family. Now, I have to use you, Brian, as my puppet. I’m sorry, but it’s what I must do to put them in their rightful place,” she thinks, her eyes glued to the television screen.

Brian arrives at the address provided, only to discover that Ruby and Stella are the ones who booked him for the evening. He checks the client's name: Rubyrose Mic. How could he have forgotten to confirm who booked him? But it’s too late now; he has to make the best of it.

Opening the car door in a gentlemanly manner, he gestures for them to enter.

“So, Brian, you’re an Uber driver?” Stella inquires, her tone half-curious, half-skeptical.

“Are you asking or doubting?” Brian replies, a playful smirk crossing his face.

“Since we booked you tonight, you have to spend the whole night with us,” Ruby declares, a glint of mischief in her eyes.

“Then you’ll have to book me for the whole night,” he jokes, but Ruby takes it seriously. She hands him extra cash, and Brian’s boss calls to congratulate him on the unexpected earnings.

“What did you just do?” Brian asks, flabbergasted.

“I booked you for the whole night,” Ruby responds, her expression unyielding.

“I was just joking! I didn’t mean you should actually book me. Don’t you know how to recognize a joke?” Brian protests, but Ruby is already lost in her own world.

“I don’t have time to joke; just drive! I have to perform around 1 AM,” she insists, glancing anxiously at her watch.

Stella sits quietly in the back seat, taking in the vibrant cityscape. She listens to Brian and Ruby’s banter, feeling like a voyeur in their budding connection. Jealousy gnaws at her insides. She’s been in love with Brian for a while now, but Ruby’s presence complicates everything.

As they drive through the lively streets, Stella’s gaze shifts between Brian and Ruby. She can sense their chemistry, a spark that makes her heart ache. Her love for Brian has morphed into an obsession; every glance he gives Ruby feels like a stab to her heart.

While Ruby has done everything to get close to Brian, Stella has felt powerless to act. The two are a perfect match, and it seems futile to compete.

When the time comes for Ruby to prepare for her performance, Brian is left in the audience, enchanted by the talent on display. He knows little about singing or dancing, but the energy in the room captivates him.

After several contestants perform, a familiar figure walks onto the stage: Lora, the waitress he met at the Everest Hotel. Her voice is electric, and her movements mesmerizing. Brian is spellbound, wondering how Ruby will fare against such talent.

When Ruby finally takes the stage, the atmosphere shifts. Her performance is a whirlwind of emotion and skill, captivating everyone in the room. Brian watches, his heart racing. She dances with a fervor that seems almost supernatural, each note resonating deep within him.

As the host announces the results, Brian feels a rush of anticipation. “Rubyrose, wow! I love how your expression changes with your voice and dance,” the host praises, and the crowd erupts in applause. Ruby takes home the trophy, while Lora claims third place, a bittersweet victory for Brian.

Claire forced a smile as Brian sat down next to her. He wore a faint smile as he looked at her, then at the distant city below. He let out a cold smile as he turned back to her. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him, wondering if he had already seen her smoking. He looked at her. “I never thought you smoked,” he said. Her smile stiffened as she looked up at him. She couldn’t deny the fact that she did.Back then, during the sea mission, she had learned how to push the cold away, but she couldn’t tell him that. From then on, she had started smoking whenever she felt confused or overwhelmed.“I do smoke, but not often. Only when things seem hard,” she said as she looked at him.He didn’t say anything for a few seconds. Then he smiled.“Life is really full of ups and downs. Whoever thought that I would be entangled with Mabel again?” he said as he looked up at the stars. But that wasn’t even what was making him sad.He then turned to look at her. “From tomorrow, we’ll be moving to th

Brian came in with a smile. He looked at Ruby, Claire, and Chloe. Today, they were all sitting together with no argument and no issue. A sweet smile spread across his face as he dropped the takeout on the table beside the bed.“You bought food?” Ruby was the first to speak as she hugged Brian and kissed him.“Eww,” Claire and Chloe said at the same time, both smiling.Chloe looked at them and then at her sister, who did not even look up.She had come to accept the fact that Brian and her sister were no longer together, and there was no need to keep being enemies with Ruby over what her sister had lost through foolishness.Brian and Ruby turned to look at them.“Sorry, I forgot you guys were here,” Ruby said with a smile as she let go of Brian and took one of the takeout packs.“You don’t have to be sorry, but remember there’s a baby in the house,” Claire said as she turned to look at Mabel, who was busy trying to close the food flask.“Oh,” Ruby said as she looked at Mabel struggling

Claire walked into the ward, and the only people she saw were Mabel and Ruby. She stopped, walked back out of the ward, and checked the number again to confirm if she was in the correct room.“Hmmm,” she sighed as she walked back in after confirming it. It was indeed Mabel’s ward, but what was Ruby doing here alone with Mabel? she wondered as she walked past them with the food flask in her hand.Ruby turned to look at her with a smile. “You’re here, Claire,” Ruby said as she took the flask from Claire’s hands. “What did you cook?” she asked with a smile. This was unlike the Ruby she once knew, the one who would make a fuss over the tiniest issue. Claire thought about it as she stared at Ruby without blinking.“Is there something on my face?” Ruby asked.Mabel was the one who answered. “No, Aunty, there’s nothing wrong with your face,” Mabel said with a smile.“Are you okay, Mabel?” Claire asked, because she still couldn’t believe how calm Ruby was while sitting next to Mabel.“I’m fin

  • 50. Too nice to be true

Ruby stood in the hallway of the hospital, holding a bag of fruit. She walked into the room, her eyes landing first on Mabel, who was sleeping, and then on Chloe, who was seated next to her.“You’re still here?” she asked in surprise. From the way Chloe had stormed out of the ward earlier, Ruby had thought she was finally going to leave their lives for good. But here she was, sitting down as if nothing had happened.“Yes, I’m still here. I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon,” Chloe said without even looking at Ruby. “My sister is still in the hospital, so I have to be here. And don’t worry, I’m not here to disturb you and your boyfriend.”“Hmm, like you’re even worthy of disturbing us.” Ruby rolled her eyes as she sat in one of the empty seats next to the sleeping Mabel. I can’t wait for her to get back to normal so I can have Brian all to myself, Ruby thought as she brought out a fresh apple from her bag.“Where’s Claire?” she asked.Chloe looked at her. Even she didn’t know wher

.Claire booked a taxi to Aron's house. It had been almost a week now—she was sure he would be worried about her."Finally, you remember me, princess," Aron said as he wrapped his arms around her waist, drawing her toward himself as he sniffed the scent from her hair."You look thin recently," he said as he looked at her, before hugging her tightly. "When are you going to make us a thing?" he asked as he turned her to face him.She smiled. "We are already a thing," she said, trying to act like she didn't understand what he was saying. How could they get married now when she hadn't claimed the Morris family yet?"You know what I mean. I want us to get married, not just dating," he said as he looked at her. In their line of work, nothing was predictable. He had the money if money was the issue, and she also had no issue when it came to that."I have to take down the Morris first, and then I would get married to you in grand style," she said, but his eyes darkened as he pushed her away.

Chloe smiled as she held his hand. "What do you think you are trying to do?" she asked as she stared at him angrily. With a smile, she slapped him hard enough."This is a correction to reset your brain. I'm not Mabel. You and your mother have no influence on me," she said as she pushed him backward."Now listen, you two fools. I'm Chloe Maxwell. If I see your four legs close to my sister's ward, then don't blame me for being ruthless. I don't mind showing you what I'm capable of," she said as she pushed her hair backward before walking back inside.Claire laughed as she walked back without saying anything, her smile was full, so long as she saw such a show.Ruby looked at Chloe. She could no longer hide her hatred and anger. "Such a shrew," Ruby sneered as she walked toward Kate.As Chloe passed, she could hear their gossip. "Whoever raised this girl did a big bad job.
