Chapter four

"Hm. Poor-poor woman." the second man said and spat to the side. Were they the cousins my supposed aunt was talking about?

The first man bent over the corpse and searched her "any sign of the pendant?" the second man asked the first, causing my heart to skip a beat. The same pendant the lady just gave me? She just put my life at risk with that single act of hers. I wish I never accepted it.

"No. She took it. Where did she put it now? I think we have to look around." the first replied the second, getting up on his feet.

"Wait... Do you smell that?" the second man asked the first. "What is it?" the first asked.

The second man bent over and I think he was staring at the lamp on the floor, "it's still hot. Someone was here. Or..." the second man added.

I felt all over the wall with my hands and soon found the window. I was ready to escape the house silently but unfortunately for me, my leg hit an unidentifiable object and the noise alerted the men.

"There is someone else in here!" the first yelled.

"You think?!" the second said to the first. "Show yourself!" he shouted in addition.

I put one foot over the window and climbed out completely. After a while, one of the men turned on his phone light.

Suddenly, a brighter light shone. I was about to run but then that bright light was followed by sirens.

"Shit! It's the cops!" the second man yelled in panic. I heard their footsteps as they ran out of the house and I breathed a sigh of relief.

"Freeze!" I heard a firm voice shout when I was about to run as the first two men did. I turned around and a bright light was directed at my face.

I used my hand to block the light from my eyes and I saw it was a policeman standing right before me.

I felt like the ground should open up and swallow me whole. I had blood stains on my hands and shirt. Damn it! I was looking like I had just committed murder and was about to run from it.

How will they believe me when I denied being guilty? And it was a sure thing that they came because of the dead woman.

"You are under arrest!" the policeman shouted to me while his colleague cuffed me from behind. "But I did not do anything," I said to the policeman. My voice fell on deaf ears. They couldn't care less about whatever it was I wanted to say.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do or say, here on out, can and will be used against you in the court of law." the policeman said to me.

My life had changed in just one night. I was forced into a police car under the watchful eyes of people who had just woken up from the noise of the sirens.

Shame and fear consumed me right at that moment. The shame of what was happening and fear for my fate from now which was still unknown to me.

I knew I would be taken in for a crime I did not commit. Nothing and no one could save me and I was left in the hands of injustice. I would rot in jail just for listening to the words of a dying woman that I discovered I was related to just minutes ago.

They took me to the police station and locked me up.

[Earlier on the same night, in a mansion far from Trevor's home]:

It's been two weeks since Mr. Sergio Vandelson died. The mansion has been quiet and still in a mournful mood.

A weak and fragile-looking woman walks down the stairs and into the sitting room. She was the wife of the late Sergio Vandelson and seemed to never want to find any atom of joy in her heart since her husband died.

Since the end of the burial and reading of the Will, she had locked herself up in her room but today she decided it was time for her to come clean.

On entering the sitting room, she found the twins, Loki Vandelson and Dean Vandelson watching television. The woman picks up the remote and turns off the television, "I need to speak to the both of you on a very important topic." she said to them.

"We are grownups aunt Penelope. You can just tell us that and we will handle the television. Loki said to her.

The woman sighed, " My apologies." she said to Loki.

"What is it that you want to tell us?" Dean asked the woman.

The woman, not knowing where to start, said the first set of words that came to mind, "the both of you cannot inherit your uncle's wealth." said the twins.

The twins exchanged looks with each other and then looked at the woman before they finally started to laugh, "if you want money then you can ask us for it. No need to get greedy. There is no way you can take it away from us." Loki said to the woman.

"It's not about my wanting the inheritance. It's my father, your grandfather, there was something he did. Only I was aware and I kept this pendant with me. Whoever I give it to takes over everything in the Vandelson name." the woman explained.

"So? Do you plan on giving it to a stranger instead of your blood relatives? We are the only ones eligible. What are you trying to say?!" Dean said, referring to himself and his twin brother Loki.

"That's what the both of you thought but today I will say everything. I have a son. He is the firstborn male and he is the one eligible for this. According to my father, everything must go to the first male in the family and I will honor that." the woman replied to them.

At that moment, the mother of the twins and sister of Mrs. Penelope Vandelson walked into the family mansion, not expecting to meet such a scene. The twins' mother noticed the atmosphere wasn't so good.

The twins, Dean and Loki seemed consumed by anger while her sister, looked off for some reason, "I was going to tell you two. My husband's property and all the money can never be inherited by you two when the eldest is still alive and..." Penelope said to the twins while their mother remains in hiding and watched the scene unfold.
