Not a joke

“Do you really think we’ll fall for it, Brandon?” Kayle sneered. He looked at the others who were getting up from the floor and they all started to nodd. “My dad is rich and you, shit head, is a good-for-nothing beggar!”

Brandon remained silent, just watching while his butler worked on the phone. He was just staring, serious, and his expression was blank.

Erika, who was still by Kayle’s side and watched the whole thing, was now observing Brandon a bit better. She had just played her role as Kayle asked and, in fact, she had not looked at the man near her. But now she could see how handsome he was. And of course, his kiss was great, although she could never admit it.

“Kayle’s father will end you!” One of the bullies said. “Not only you, Brandon, but those clowns, too!”

“Yeah, he will. Nobody touches me and lives another day!” Kayle smirke, nodding.

“All done, sir. The information is gathered.” The old man said in a very polite and professional way. Then, turning to Kayle, he continued. “Your family, Young Mr. Jamerson, will go bankrupt in thirty minutes from now. Take or leave a few minutes.”

Kayle and the others started to laugh hysterically.

“You know, I might hire you for some kid’s party!” Kayle continued to make jokes. The butler looked at Brandon, who gave a slight negative with his head, indicating they should let those idiots continue while they could.

It didn’t take long until Kayle’s phone started to buzz and he saw it was his father.

“Now you’re dead! It’s my father.” He spit the words, full of pride. “Dad! You can-”

Then, Kayle’s expression started to change. First, he frowned, then, he opened his mouth, trying to say something, but no words came out of his mouth.

‘You are a disgrace to the name of this family, Kayle!’, his father yelled on the other side of the line. ‘Because of you, all my business partners called to terminate our partnerships!’

Kayle couldn’t believe his ears. His family’s business was having issues? Why would the partners want to end their cooperation with Jamerson & Cia?

“But, why is it on me?” He finally asked. Kayle was not convinced yet that Brandon and all those people with him had anything to do with this problem. Maybe that was just a coincidence.

‘WHY? I told you more than once to quit bullying people, but did you hear me? No. I always cleaned up your mess, but this time, you fucked up, son!’

Arnold Jamerson was not one to lose his temper easily, but he was moved by money and he was a proud man with his solid business career. He worked a lot to build his name in the industry and he did not accept his son, his only son, to ruin everything.

His voice, normally serious, but very calm and controlled, was furious, reverberating inside Kayle’s head.

“H-how it happened? T-this idiot i-is a b-beggar! He has nothing!” Kayle tried to explain himself, stuttering.

‘Oh, really? If you used your time to know more about our business, about the good families of this country, you’d know that the Ashford Family is damn powerful! I’m ashamed of having you as my son!’

Arnold Jamerson hung up the phone while his son was still trying to talk, leaving Kayle panicked.

“Who the fuck are you?” He asked, looking at Brandon with widened eyes.

Kayle knew now that Brndon was no ordinary man, despite his clothes from department stores, cheap shoes, lame job and his weak figure. Although Brandon was tall, he was quite skinny and everyone assumed it was because he had no money to buy food.

“Man, I’m sorry, ok?” Diego said. “My parents ain’t this rich, we cannot afford to lose our business!” Diego was Latin and his family had just started a nice business. It was already hard for them because of people's judgment. And that was the reason why Brandon would not excuse him at all, since he should know better than to bully others. But he wouldn’t make him and his family penniless. The guy had a younger little brother.

“Yeah, forgive us!” It was Collin’s turn to beg. Brandon didn’t know much about Collin, except the guy was from another country.

“What must I do, sir?” The butler asked, and Brandon didn’t even look at those bullies, who were now at their feet, begging. All, except Kayle, who just stared at Brandon with hatred eyes.

Erika was the only daughter of a midi class family, having her parents worked hard to send her to college and find a good husband. She lied to Kayle in order to win his heart. She was frozen in fear that her secret would be revealed, but the butler just cast a glance at her. She knew he knew, but he said nothing. For now, she was grateful.

She was afraid of asking for forgiveness and having Kayle breaking up with her .Even if his family’s business was going down, they were still economically superior to her.

Brandon started to walk to the door and the butler followed him. Turned out that he was the heir of the great Ashford family. The only heir, to be exactly. But he wanted to taste a normal life, he wanted to achieve his goals in life without his family’s influence. That was why he endured all that crap for all those years.

“Are we going to the Ashford Manor, sir?”

Brandon didn’t answer until they were outside the hotel room.

“No.”

“But, sir…”

The butler stopped talking when Brandon glanced at him. Even though to others he was normally very calm, right now, still indignant and furious, Brandon Ashford’s aura was dangerous and cold. The butler wouldn’t dare to keep insisting and just watched as the young man left.

Brandon just sent by message what should be done to each one of the other bullies and that was it. Now, he would get back to his normal life and forget all that happened that night.

Kayle had different plans.
