CHAPTER 91
Liam's POVI barely had time to think about it when the door flew open, so fast it hit the wall with a loud bang. Sarah ran in, hugging her laptop to her chest like it was a treasure. Her hair was wild, and her eyes were shining with that wild look she always had when something big had just happened.Anna followed her, clearly shaken with her hands moving like she didn’t know whether to stop her or say sorry.“Mr. Carter, I’m so sorry,” Anna said quickly. “I tried to stop her, but—”“It’s okay, Anna,” I said, raising a hand. “You know Sarah. When she’s in the zone, no one can stop her. Not even you.”Sarah didn’t say a word to us. She went straight to the table, opened her laptop, and connected it to the big screen like she’d done it a hundred times. Her fingers moved fast, like magic, and in seconds, the screen lit up with a satellite photo.“Got it,” she said with a proud smile. “Tracked the flash drive. And guess what?”I stepped closer. I already had a feeling what she’d say. “T
CHAPTER 92
Liam's POVI felt a bit better right away—and a little hopeful. Maybe, just maybe, we had someone on the inside. I answered quickly.“Locke,” said the rough voice. No hello, just straight to business. “I got your card. I’ve been thinking about what you said earlier.”“Deputy,” I said, trying to stay calm, “Thanks for calling me back.”“Don’t get excited. I’m not promising anything. But I’ll listen. You said you had something on Blackwood. It better be good. I’m already taking a risk just talking to you.”“It is good. I can prove Blackwood has been breaking the law for years.”“Alright, then. But not over the phone. I don’t want anyone listening in. Meet me at the old gas station on Highway 12, just past the county line. In fifteen minutes. And come alone.”“Fifteen minutes. I’ll be there.” I hung up. This could be the chance we needed.Hans and Sarah were watching me. “That was Locke,” I said. “He wants to meet. He’s willing to listen.”Hans raised an eyebrow. “Locke? You think he’ll
CHAPTER 93
Liam's POVThe van came to a stop a little far from the warehouse. The engine went quiet, and dust rose around us. My heart was beating fast. This was it. After days of searching and taking risks, we were finally here, ready to face Blackwood’s group.“Alright,” Locke said in a calm but serious tone. He looked at us, his eyes hard in the dim light. “Sarah, you stay here. Watch the camera feeds and guide us. If anything goes wrong, you’ll be our eyes.”“Got it,” Sarah said, already working on her laptop. Her face was lit up by the screen. “I’m watching everything. I’ll let you know if something looks weird.”Then Locke turned to Hans and me. “Okay, listen. We go in quietly. We want to surprise them and get them to give up without a fight. No one should get hurt. But,” his face got serious, “if they fight, we protect ourselves. Understand?”We all nodded and I swallowed hard. My mouth felt dry. I looked at the pistol at my side. Locke had shown me how to use it, but I wasn’t good with
CHAPTER 94
Liam's POV“Did we get him?” I asked with my voice sounding weak and scratchy. My chest hurt badly from where the bullets had hit my vest.A shadow moved over me. “Take it easy, Liam.” said a deep voice I knew—it was Hans. He knelt beside me. “You got hit pretty hard.”I tried to sit up, but I felt sick and dizzy. “Eddie… is he… okay?”Hans looked at Bob, who was standing close. “He’s okay, Liam. Locke got him. He’s shaken up, but he’s alive.”I felt relief and almost forgot the pain. “Thank God,” I whispered while closing my eyes. Then I heard footsteps. Locke walked over. He looked really tired, but there was a proud look in his eyes. He crouched next to me.“You okay, kid?” he asked in a rough, but kind voice.“Yeah,” I said, wincing as I moved. “The vest saved me. But… who was the guy who shot me? I didn’t know him.”Locke sighed. “It doesn’t matter. He won’t be hurting anyone else for a long time.” He looked behind me. “But we have another problem.”I turned my head to see wh
CHAPTER 95
Liam's POVSheriff Grey’s words slowly registered in my head. “Under arrest? What for?” I asked, louder than I meant to. Sarah, who was standing behind me, gasped at the same time.Grey’s eyes were cold and unmoving. “Yesterday’s shooting left several people dead. They were innocent workers, Mr. Carter.”“What?” I said, shocked. “That’s crazy! We went there to save someone! Those weren’t workers!”Sarah stepped up with her eyes full of fire. “Sheriff, you’ve got it all wrong! “This has to be a mistake! Liam would never do that…”Grey cut her off. “He had help. People working with Mr. Carter. We believe they’re part of this too. We’re bringing them in.”My heart sank. Hans. Locke. I had to protect them. “Listen,” I said, trying to sound calm. “I was alone. If something happened, it was just me. Arrest me alone.”Grey smirked like he was enjoying this. “That’s brave of you, Mr. Carter. But we’ll find out the truth. Cuff him.”Two officers came forward and the handcuffs clicked shu
CHAPTER 96
Liam's POVThe room went quiet and Sheriff Grey looked furious. Hans stepped forward and leaned close to a police officer, whispering, “My client is innocent. Take your time with this so-called ‘investigation.’”Grey looked like he was going to explode. “You think I work for Blackwood?” he yelled. “After everything I’ve done here, you accuse me like this?!”Locke didn’t back down. He looked Grey in the eyes. “I’m saying what others are too scared to say. Blackwood runs this town, and you’ve helped him.”Grey stepped closer to Locke with his hands balled into fists. Then he grabbed the badge on Locke’s chest and ripped it off hard even tearing the uniform.“You’re fired!” Grey shouted so loud it echoed. “Get out of my station before I lock you up with Carter!”Locke stood tall and he stared at Grey blankly. “You know I’m telling the truth,” he said. “One day, you’ll have to pay for what you’ve done.”Hans saw the chance. He stepped between Grey and the cell bars, raising his hands.
CHAPTER 97
Ryan's POVI sat on the couch with my legs resting on the coffee table, holding a half-full bottle of beer in my hand. The local news was on the TV with the anchor sounding quite serious. “Billionaire CEO, Liam Carter was held for a short time today because of a shooting at a warehouse last night, but he’s been let go due to…”The camera showed Liam walking out of the sheriff's office. Reporters rushed toward him, pushing microphones at him.“Mr. Carter, what do you say about the people who died?”“Mr. Carter, were you part of the shooting?”“Mr. Carter, why were you at the warehouse?”Liam stopped with his face showing no emotion. “It was all a mix-up,” he said calmly. “The police and I worked everything out. That’s all there is to it.”The reporters shouted more questions. Before Liam could speak again, Hans Hoffman stepped forward like a wall.“No more questions,” Hans said clearly. He led Liam away, protecting him from the press until they got into a car.I suddenly felt angry a
CHAPTER 98
Ryan's POV“I know you,” I said quickly. The man sitting in my chair... it couldn’t be. But it was. The scars on his face were clear. Silas Scratch. A famous criminal. Just got out of jail.Silas smiled creepily and the scars around his mouth stretched. They looked even worse up close. “Well, well, well,” he said slowly. “Looks like the little bird knows who I am. Ryan Blackwood, right? You’ve gained some weight.”I felt my face flush red with anger. What was going on? “Why are you in my office, Scratch?” I asked, trying to stay calm. This had to be a bad dream. Maybe from drinking too much last night. Then, someone spoke from behind. “I invited him, Ryan.”I turned around quickly. My dad. Standing in the doorway. His face showed nothing, no emotions as usual and my stomach dropped. This was real. It was really happening.I felt both angry and confused. “Dad? What is going on? Why is Silas Scratch in my office?” I pointed at Silas, who just sat there with his eyes shining with amu
CHAPTER 99
Ryan's POVWith a deep breath, I pushed away from the desk. I had to leave this place. I needed a plan. And maybe, just maybe, I could use Silas to help me.I grabbed my jacket and threw it over my shoulder. I picked up my car keys from the desk and walked out, feeling the workers' eyes on me all the way.The Golden Dragon was just what I thought, small and dark, but fitting for Scratch. Silas was already there, sitting at a table in the back, holding a drink that looked like whiskey.I walked over to him with my jaw tight. “You’ve got a lot of nerve,” I said, sitting across from him.Silas looked up with a cold light in his eyes. “Relax, kid. I’m not here to make things worse. Maybe easier, but not worse.”I gave a short laugh. “Sure. You’re here to ‘help’ me. That’s funny.”He leaned back, looking at me without blinking. “I won’t lie. I wasn’t happy about this either. But your dad made me an offer I couldn’t say no to. I’ve learned how to play this game. He wants me to do a job,
CHAPTER 100
Liam's POVCharles stood there, looking kind of awkward like he was late for dinner instead of missing for weeks. “Where have you been?” I almost shouted with my anger just waiting to explode. “You disappeared. No calls, no messages. You left me hanging. The board doesn't run Carter Enterprises anymore, Charles. You need to report directly to me!”Charles sighed and ran a hand through his messy hair. “I know, Liam. I'm sorry. I owe you a real explanation, and I know it won’t fix things. But I had to go away for a while and guess what, I found something big.”“Something big?” I repeated, not hiding how little I believed him. “That’s your excuse? You just vanished for ‘something big’ while everything was falling apart here?” I crossed my arms, not wanting to let him off easy. “We were supposed to handle Carter Enterprises together, remember?”“I know the timing was awful, the worst. I regret it. But trust me, what I found…it matters. It's huge,” he said.“Huge enough to leave me behind
