CHAPTER 101
Liam's POVThe digital clock on my laptop said 5:57 AM and the only lights came from my small desk lamp and my computer screen. After I had tasked Sarah with looking up Scratch, I went back to work and realized just how much I'd been missing out on work. Chairman Harding's words from the Conference the other day kept ringing in my head as I worked and that served as a driving force too as I ended up working through the night. I had dozed off in the early hours of the day and was just waking up with my head slouched over my desk.I blinked at the glaring light of my laptop and reached out to shut it when I heard a soft click. Charles came in quietly, holding his usual leather bag. He placed a stack of papers on my desk and just looking at them made me feel sick.“Morning, Liam,” Charles said softly.Hans entered a few minutes later, and stood by the window, arms crossed. He didn’t say anything, just stared outside at the early morning sky. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.Sarah
CHAPTER 102
Liam's POVJust two days after that fiasco with the Blackwood servers came the invitation from the mayor inviting me to the charity gala he was hosting.I was allowed to bring a plus one so I immediately picked Sarah mainly because I knew Blackwood was also invited. I needed Sarah's quick wits.I looked at myself in the mirror. The black suit I was wearing felt strange like it didn’t belong to me. I usually wear old jeans and T-shirts.“You actually look like a billionaire tonight, Liam,” Sarah said, breaking my thoughts.“You don’t like it?” I asked, trying to sound relaxed.“Don’t like it? No. You look good,” she said, studying my face. “But don’t think this act is fooling anyone. We both know what tonight really is.”She was right. This wasn’t just a party for us. It was a show of lies and threats.“It’s just one more step, Sarah. One step closer to bringing them down,” I said.“Be careful, Liam. Dancing with snakes never ends well. Especially when the snake is Blackwood,” she warne
CHAPTER 103
Liam's POVOur car moved quietly and smoothly like a cat in the dark. Sarah sat next to me, her face lit by the soft glow of her tablet. I stared out the window, watching the city lights turn into long and blurry lines. I quietly sent a text to Hans to meet us at one of my safehouses.Sarah was typing fast on her tablet, her fingers flying across the screen like she was racing time. Then she let out a sigh, a short breath full of stress.“Damn it!” she said quietly, more to herself than to me.“Found anything?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer. She shook her head without looking up. “Nothing solid. I’ve checked every fake name, and every digital clue, and even searched the darkest parts of the internet. Every trail leads nowhere. There are firewalls, broken files, deleted pages... It’s like he doesn’t exist.”“Or someone powerful doesn’t want us to find him,” I said. She looked at me with a frown on her face. “Exactly. Blackwood isn’t just rich, Liam. He has power. He
CHAPTER 104
Liam's POVMy heart suddenly jumped to my throat at the mention of my father, and I paused for a moment, just to get my thoughts straight. “Mom? What do you mean?” I asked. “What about my father?”The fact that she was suddenly mentioning my father on our call left me feeling worried. This was the one topic she'd never discuss with me even while I was still a curious little boy growing up.There was a little pause on the other end too and I felt my curiosity and anxiety rising with the moment's pause.“What's the matter, mom?” I asked, a little too loud now. “What are you not telling me?”“Oh Liam, my dear Liam.” She spoke affectionately. “I shouldn't have left you alone. I should be there with you. This storm is way too complicated and too dangerous for you to handle alone.”I sighed with frustration clawing at my insides. “What's happening, mom? You're getting me scared!”“I'll… I'll discuss this with you in person.” She sniffed. “I'll be on the first flight back home tomorrow.”“W
CHAPTER 105
Liam's POVCarter? Tobias Carter?I was shocked and momentarily paralyzed as I stared at the stranger before me. Looking at him closely, I could now see that I had some of his features like the green eyes, and the messy hair. Even though he had tried to comb and keep it neat it was still battling to be free just like mine too!“Dad?” I blurted the word out before I could restrain myself, and then immediately regretted why I had said it out loud.“What?” The man's forehead cringed in a frown. “God no!” He exclaimed. “Are you okay?”I felt ashamed now and slowly got to my feet.“Wait outside,” I told Anna. She looked at me and then at Tobias, and then at me again uncertainly, but then she turned and left the office, closing the door behind her as she left.My attention immediately returned to Tobias who was scrutinizing me keenly as if I was a lab test.“Tobias Carter?” I asked in a slightly trembling voice. “Do you happen to be related to…”“Yes, that's the one.” He cut me off rudely, a
CHAPTER 106
Liam's POVI pulled up at the parking lot just outside Hans' office so aggressively and earned myself a couple of raised eyebrows from the people around. My head kept replaying all that had happened that morning, and the more I thought about the whole situation, the more restless I felt. Even though I tried to keep my feelings at bay and approach Hans as calmly as possible, Tobias' cold and calculating eyes, his smirk and his calm nature kept getting on my nerves for obvious reasons.“How may I help you, sir?” A receptionist asked.I focused my attention on her, for once, getting out of my thoughts. I strolled into the building and straight at the first desk I saw at the entrance.“I have an appointment with Hans Hoffman,” I replied while holding out my identity card to the receptionist.“Oh, Mr Carter.” The lady smiled. “You look even younger in person. Perhaps even more handsome.” She winked.I didn't even react to her words. I already had enough on my plate and flirting with a rece
CHAPTER 107
Liam's POV“Liam! There, that's my boy, Liam!”I looked up quickly and saw Mom walking over, dragging her luggage behind her as she approached.I had zeroed off and didn't even know when she had entered the hall until she was right in front of me. I clumsily got off the chair and approached her.“Mom,” I called.Even though I was happy to see her arrive safely, my body wasn't responding due to the events of the previous day, I guess.“Oh. Liam. It's good to see you again!” Mom said as she threw her arms around me and hugged me so passionately. For a brief moment, I just wanted to stay there. I wanted to remain there in her embrace, the one place where I felt safe and secure, but then I was a full-grown man now, I had to face and slay my demons. Now was no time to find shelter and refuge in my mom.“I've missed you, Liam,” she sang as she squeezed me a little too tight.“Missed you too, Mom,” I replied. What was that? A tear? Liam?I quickly wiped my eyes, hoping she didn't notice. It w
CHAPTER 108
Liam's POVFor the past half an hour I sat still, listening to my mom's story with our drinks forgotten on the table in front of us. Her story was quite the wild one and I admit, confusing and complicated as well.According to her account, she had met my father while she was a secretary, his secretary at Carter Enterprises. He was quite the womanizer too, but when he met her, something in him clicked into place and it didn't take long before they realized they loved each other. With my father being from an aristocratic family, it was required of him as the eldest to marry and produce an heir to carry on the family name, business and legacy and my father chose my mom as the woman he loved, but there were complications. For her safety, he refused to introduce her to his people and in secret, they got married away from his family and society's problems. His younger brother, Tobias always suspected that he had a relationship with his secretary, but it was no secret that Tobias wanted Carte
CHAPTER 109
Liam's POVI heard the commotion before I saw it. A small crowd of reporters had gathered at the entrance of Carter Enterprises and were trying to force their way into the building.“What the hell?” I muttered under my breath as I slowly pulled the car into my parking space. What exactly was going on here?I could see Charles at the top of the entrance stairs at the entrance issuing quick commands to the security men. What was this noise all about? I wondered silently as I made my way towards the entrance.“Mr. Carter!” A reporter saw me and quickly made a beeline for me. Soon enough, his colleagues realized what he was doing and in no time, the crowd came stampeding toward me.“Mr. Carter, what do you have to say about the return of your Uncle?”“Is it true, Mr. Carter? Is it true that your uncle was the actual heir to the family business?”“What do you have to say about your Uncle being responsible for your father's death?”Question after question was thrown at me from all sides and
CHAPTER 110
Ryan's POV“What do you mean?!” I screamed at the men before me.The men shifted uncomfortably and even looked away except Zane who I was addressing.“Like I said, he just seemed to vanish,” Zane repeated. “We could've told where he went to.”I was burning with rage and this is just how I've been for days now, at least ever since my father saw the need to recruit Silas Scratch!“How possible is it to lose a full-grown man in broad daylight?!” I asked angrily. “You had one job! Your job was to closely follow this Scratch guy, and know what he's up to! I need to know what he's planning with father!”“Easier said than done,” Cole muttered under his breath.“Excuse me?” I asked with narrowed eyes. “Did you say something, Cole?”“I only mean it's pretty difficult when it comes to Silas Scratch,” Cole said. “The man is a walking shadow. He's a pro, Boss. He's good at what he does and honestly, no one can follow someone like that.”“Give me your firearm.” I stretched out my hand at Zane.“Umm
