Jace walked into the convenience store just like he always did, only one thing on his mind, to find the right clothes for college. He was specific about the style he wanted, something youthful but simple.

He doesn't want to flaunt his wealth in college, but also doesn't want to look like someone who was struggling to stay alive.

While in the male clothes section, picking out a few t-shirts from the hangers, he heard a familiar voice in the section behind him. Not one, but two familiar voices, one belonging to a female whom he's never failed to recognise and the other belonging to a man, someone he has probably had an encounter with.

"Try this one," said the female voice,

"It suits you a lot."

Jace paused, his hand stuck on the hanger like a statue, he heard the voice again and his jaws dropped in shock,

"Tess?"

Quickly, Jace wanted to go to the other section to see her, but suddenly the sales lady who escorted him called his attention.

"Is there any problem sir?"

"Oh," Jace m

  • [62] You will regret this

Dave stormed down the corridor, his shoes striking the polished tiles in sharp, echoing steps. The echoes followed him like a drumbeat to his fury, each one pushing him faster until he reached the heavy oak door at the end of the hall. Mr. Coleman, the name on a golden plate hung firmly on the door, indicating that it was Tristan Coleman's office, the place where his father was also expected to be. Dave didn’t knock, he just pushed the door open so hard it slammed into the wall, his breath heavy like someone who had just run a marathon. Tears still cling to the corner of his eyes, and shame washes over his face. Inside, the room smelled faintly of leather and cologne, with the tall windows letting in shafts of sunlight that fell over the polished desk where Tristan Coleman lounged in a tailored navy suit. As the door flung open, his sharp eyes flickered toward Dave with mild irritation. Beside him, seated in the high-backed leather chair, was Washington, Dave’s father, his broad

  • [62] Potential love interest: 79

Dave’s jaw was locked so tight that the muscles in his face twitched. His eyes swept over the crowd, as the elites who had cheered for him minutes ago now sat in rigid silence. The reality was humiliating, not even his father had voted for him, the same man whom he thought would be the reason he'd win, now brought him nothing but shame. Whispers darted across the hall like sparks, some sharp with shock and others dripping with disbelief. The elite students were somewhat divided, their eyes gleaming with pride and jealousy. The scholarship students were on their feet, clapping and cheering. Their faces glowed with a pride that hadn’t been there before. The elites, however, looked as if they had swallowed something bitter. Their prestige, their untouchable confidence, had just been pierced by someone they had barely considered worthy to stand at the podium. Dave growled, his hands curled into fists, but he couldn’t do anything about it. An agreement was an agreement. The terms had

  • [61] The debate 2

The debate began, and Dave started strong, at least on the surface. His voice was smooth, and his points well-rehearsed. He spoke about preserving elite traditions and maintaining the prestige of the institution. He often dropped a subtle dig at scholarship students between the lines, with statements like "Without a set of people, I believe the standard of this academy would be unmatched anywhere in the world." Whenever he talked about lowering standards, Dave's eyes flicked to Jace’s side of the room. At the same time, the elite audience nodded approvingly, almost every one of them agreed with his hinted discriminatory speech. As for the scholarship students, they shifted uncomfortably, because Dave spoke with so much confidence and Charisma that would make anyone agree with him. Even Tristan Coleman nodded his head at intervals. When Dave finished, he took a bow and stepped back from the podium, the elite audience erupted with cheers and applauses, and then finally it was Jace’s

THE NEXT DAYThe morning sun didn’t rise gently over campus, it exploded, flooding every corner with gold as though it wanted to illuminate the sequence of events that was about to unfold. From the moment Jace stepped out of his dorm, all eyes followed him and whispered voices trailed behind, each one was laced with either pity or quiet anticipation. Even Jace himself was slightly tensed, but he tried not to show it.By the time he reached the debate hall, the crowd was already swelling, a thick sea of students, both scholarship and elite, neatly divided between the left and right side of the hall, the seating arrangement wasn't a laid out rule, but everyone subconsciously knew thier places and would rather avoid trouble. On the left, the scholarship students sat in tight clusters, their faces tight with anxiety, some even refused to make eye contact with him at all.On the right, the elite circle, relaxed in their expensive jackets with smirks carved into their expressions like they

  • [59] Everyone thinks the Washingtons would crush him

Jace made it to the restroom before the lecture hall, peeling off the coffee-soaked shirt and inspecting the burn in the mirror. It wasn’t bad enough to need a nurse, but it was irritating. He splashed cold water over the stain, muttering,“First coffee, who knows, next time they’ll throw gold bricks… at least then I could sell them.”"Hey Jace!" A familiar voice called his attention from behind, and Jace quickly looked into the mirror, recognising the young man from his reflection."Uhm, hi," he answered. It happens to be the same boy that Jace is trying to defend."We meet again it seems," Jace added."No, I was following you." The boy cut in, his tone dripped with sincerity."I'm sorry about what he did to you. That's Dave's brother; they are bullies, all of them.""I guess I've learnt that now," Jace nodded, but the boy interrupted him again."I... I'm trying to beg you... again," he babbled, "It's not too late to back out of the fight now, cancel the debate and apologise to Dav

  • [58] Saved by Jane ... allegedly

"Yes mum, I'm fine and no... I'm not causing any trouble in college, don't you trust me?" Jace mumbled with a smirk while speaking with his mom over the phone. He had just returned from the classroom and wanted to take a quick snack before the next class. Normally, he would have done this at the dining lounge, where all students, both scholarship and elite, go for lunch, but he didn’t want to draw any unnecessary attention, and he didn't want to meet with anyone who would offend him."Yes Mom, I'm taking care of myself, it's only been a day since I got here," Jace rolled his eyes,"Don't worry I'll be fine."With that, he ended the call and heaved a sigh of relief."Sheesh... mom," he muttered with a smile. He reached for the refrigerator and took out a can of soda. It's a good thing Jack wasn't in the room, else he'd remind Jace of how he didn't deserve those drinks as a scholarship student."Those fools acting like the world belongs to them," he mumbled, taking his seat on the edge
