CHAPTER 001
In a well secured prison facility on the outskirts of Rivergate City, the warden guard walked majestically to a cell, “Hey you, Inmate 456, Steven Milton! You are free to go. I hope you don't get to come back to this awful place. Try not to come back here. Be good!” Steven walked out majestically from the cell, followed the warden guard closely from behind he was led to the storage room. He was given a box and went through some prison procedures. All the outfits he brought with him were returned back and he gave the warden a slight nod. He changed into them, everything he was imprisoned with five years ago, except for his engagement ring could be found in the box, he knew that was long gone, he didn't bother to ask, he just wanted to leave that godforsaken place as soon as possible. “Someone is here to pick you up. Steven, stay away from trouble!” The warden uttered and Steven only nodded. ‘Someone? Tsk! Does anyone even care about his well being?’ He thought. Five years ago, S
CHAPTER 002
Steven was getting really agitated by all the questioning, he just wanted to leave that vicinity but he knew that this was his only ride and had to put up with it. “*Sighs* If you must know, the day I got into prison, the guards confiscated it. Since it wasn't in my things five years later, then it is long gone.” “You liar,” Diana snapped, clearly outraged; “what are you trying to prove by saying that? I had Jack bribe the guards and everyone in there to let you lead a comfortable life to make sure that you were treated well there. So how could they confiscate your engagement ring?” Steven laughed coldly, he couldn't contain his amusement. Looking at Dianna speaking with such certainty, Steven let out a mocking laugh. "Good treatment?" On his very first day in prison, the vicious warden had forced him to strip naked and doused him with freezing cold water. And when the warden saw his ring, he had smashed Steven’s finger just to rip it off. Was that what Dianna called “good t
CHAPTER 003
Steven, who totally ignored Helen’s dreadful stares, walked towards his room just under the staircase. This particular room wasn't meant for anyone to live in, it is supposed to be a storage room, where things that aren't necessarily needed were kept until they do, but then this little space turned out to be Steven's room. When Steven newly arrived at the Milton's household, he was welcomed with open arms, he thought they cared about him but that was all a facade. When he first stepped into the mansion, his family, most especially his parents, had arranged a bright, gorgeous, clean and spacious room for him. He was so excited, he thought finally he was home to his own family and that he wouldn't need to suffer again. But then something happened, Jackson his adopted brother walked into the room and said, “Mom, dad, my game room is too small for me, I want this to be my new gaming room!” His mum asked gently; “Sweetheart, are you sure?” “Yes mum, please!” Jackson uttered pout
CHAPTER 004
Sarah Milton was heartbroken by those words of his, she couldn't even find the right words to counter it. She simply stood there and utterly embarrassed by her own son’s remarks. Helen couldn't remain calm anymore, she quickly scolded him; “Steven what has gotten into you? Are you insane? How could you say something as horrible as that to your own mother?” Steven turned to her,his eyes colder than they've ever been. “Mother? You call her my mother? What kind of a mother stands there and falsely accuses their own son?” “Stop that will you? That's your mum and the queen of this household, you shouldn't speak ill of her when all she wanted was to embrace you and welcome you home!” Steven scoffed at Helen's words and turned towards his supposed mother. “Aren't you going to say anything? Did the cat get your tongue, Mrs Milton?” Sarah's heart clenched at his cold words, they were like blazing arrows making their way to her heart. She was heartbroken and uttered; “There was nothin
CHAPTER 005
Steven laughed uncontrollably at Helen's words yet again, it was more like she was becoming even more comical by each second. “Helen, why don't you tell me or explain in layman's terms exactly, pinpointing every single thing the Milton family has ever gotten me?” She scoffed at his words and said; “Like I said before, at the very least since you are so determined that you got nothing else. But the fifty thousand dollars allowance you have been receiving over the years. Let's minus the five years you were in prison, that doesn't count, but you still received $1 million.” “I will not repeat myself again, your family didn't give me a single penny. Since you are so convinced that I received such an amount of money, prove it. Bring evidence, but if you have nothing to show for it, you will have me to contend with, I can assure you.” Steven sternly retorted. Helen scoffed and was about to retaliate when someone walked over. A tall young man with somewhat brownish hair appeared, his s
CHAPTER 006
“Wait, what?! He said the heir of the Milton family is just an adopted son? That can’t be true!” “This is huge news! We really came to the right banquet today!” The murmurs of the guests filled the entire room. Steven’s sudden revelation had completely caught Helen off guard. How dare he! Helen was seething with rage. Looking at Jackson, who stood frozen in place, she knew she had to come up with something fast to protect his reputation. “Ridiculous! Do you really think anyone would believe your nonsense?” Helen sneered, forcing a scornful expression. “Our Jackson is the rightful heir, raised with the best elite education since childhood! He’s not someone a piece of trash like you can slander!” “Kneel down right now and apologize! Admit that everything you said was a lie—or I’ll call the police and have you thrown back in prison!” Helen shouted furiously. In her mind, Steven was nothing more than a weak coward. Just a few harsh words, and he’d usually lower his head like a
CHAPTER 007
Steven’s words hit like an explosion. For a heartbeat, no one moved, no one breathed. The party hall, once buzzing with laughter, champagne glasses clinking, and music now fell into an unnatural stillness. Sever ties with the Milton family? The murmurs started softly, then grew into a hum like a swarm of angry bees. “Did he just—?” “He’s insane.” “Who walks away from the Miltons?” “He’s giving up everything!” The Milton name wasn’t just powerful—it was untouchable. Their empire sprawled across Riverage City like a web, worth hundreds of millions and feared by rivals. People clawed for a fraction of what Steven had by birthright… and here he was, throwing it all away willingly. Helen finally snapped out of her shock, her eyes wide, chest heaving as her face twisted with anger. Her voice cut through the crowd like a whip. “How dare you, Steven? How dare you!” Sarah Milton stumbled forward, nearly tripping on the hem of her gown. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her hand trem
CHAPTER 008
Helen’s lips trembled, but not from remorse. Her pride was an unshakable fortress, and no truth however sharp—would break it down. She straightened her shoulders, sneering as if she hadn’t just been cornered by Steven’s revelations. “Even if this family failed to change your school,” she spat, “we have a driver. A driver, Steven! Why on earth would you walk twenty kilometers every day? Were you choosing to look pitiful so people would pity you?” A wave of gasps swept through the room. Steven froze. His temples throbbed, his head pounding. Did she really just twist her cruelty into his failings? His voice cut through the murmurs, sharp and unflinching. “You want to talk about drivers? Fine. The Milton family had a driver, yes—for Jackson. I remember the day I asked to tag along, just one time.” He paused, eyes locking on Helen. “Jackson glared at me and said he wasn’t used to sharing a car with anyone let alone strangers. I was thirteen. And what did you do, Helen?” The cro
CHAPTER 009
Helen’s voice cracked through the tension like a whip. “You are lying, Steven! It couldn’t possibly be you. You’re a liar! Jackson wouldn't do such a thing.” She kept repeating. Steven didn’t flinch. His voice came back low, deliberate, and sharp. “Your so-called favorite, Jackson, can’t even boil water without supervision. He can’t cook to save his life. I made those meals, Helen, every single one of them. And every day, I left them in a lunchbox with your name on it.” Helen shook her head furiously, denial clawing at her pride. “I don’t believe you.” Steven stepped closer, his eyes steady, almost pitying, “Then don’t believe me. But why not check your kitchen’s surveillance? Why not go back and watch the footage from all those years? You’ll see who was there every morning before I walked twenty kilometers to school.” The crowd gasped softly, whispers rippling like waves. Jackson’s shoulders tensed, his hands fiddling nervously with the edge of his suit jacket. Sweat bea
CHAPTER 010
Helen's eyes were like a piercing arrow, if eyes could kill Steven would have dropped dead from those gazes. She couldn't believe that her reputation was almost damaged because of Steven's lies. Helen’s knuckles tightened around her phone, her face a mask of self-righteous indignation. In the entire room no one moved, everyone was transfixed waiting to get every word and every action. There was only heavy silence that came before a storm. Helen’s voice dripped with disdain. “Everything I’ve done for you, Steven, has been for your own good. You came into this family like some… some uncultured country boy.” She spat, “If I hadn’t stepped in to teach you proper manners, you’d still be addressing elders like you used to and apparently you’ve learned nothing!” The corners of Steven’s lips curled into a cold, humorless smile. “Proper manners? You mean humiliation. You mean pretending I didn’t exist or did you mean locking me out of family dinners because I didn’t dress the par
