The stadium was the largest structure in the city, a bowl of steel and light built solely for this one day of the year — Ranking Day, when every eighteen-year-old awakener in the district stood before the Classification Crystal and learned what kind of person the System had decided they were.Michael Stone stood in line number forty-one, and he had never felt so small in his life.Above him, the stands rose in tiers thick with families, scouts, and guild representatives, thousands of faces pressed together under the floodlights, murmuring, laughing, placing bets on who would pull an S this year. Banners for the top guilds hung from the rafters — Ashen Vanguard, Iron Halo, Meridian Company — each one a promise of the life that awaited anyone who ranked high enough to be noticed.Michael didn't have a banner waiting for him. He didn't have anyone in the stands at all.He wiped his palms against his jeans and watched the boy ahead of him — a broad-shouldered kid named Derek who'd been th

2. Commander Without a Squad

Finding even a single scrap of work turned out to be its own kind of humiliation.Michael spent the following two weeks walking from guild hall to guild hall with his status card in hand, watching the same expression cross face after face the moment they saw the word ZERO printed where a rank should be. Some didn't even bother reading past that word. A woman at Meridian Company's front desk had literally laughed out loud, apologized, and then laughed again. A recruiter at a mid-tier expedition company had told him, not unkindly, that even their support staff needed at least a D-Rank in something — anything — just so the insurance paperwork would clear.By the end of the second week, Michael had lowered his ambitions considerably. He wasn't looking for a hunter position anymore. He wasn't even looking for a real support role. He was looking for someone, anyone, willing to let him carry their bags.He found that someone in a cramped office above a noodle shop — a small, five-person exped

3. The First Man Who Stood Behind Him

Four more instances. That was what stood between Michael and whatever the System was hiding behind that locked evolution.Over the following month, he made himself indispensable to Garrison's crew in the only way available to him — not through strength, but through presence. He memorized every hunter's habits, their blind spots, the half-second delay in their reactions when they were tired. He started calling out warnings before danger fully materialized, timing his voice so precisely that hunters obeyed without stopping to question why a porter was giving orders. Nobody thanked him for it. Nobody credited him. But four more times, in four different dungeons, someone stronger than him followed his voice and lived because of it.[4 / 5.]The fifth instance, though, wasn't going to come from Garrison's crew. Garrison had made it clear, in increasingly irritated tones, that Michael's "lucky guesses" were beginning to annoy the team's actual tactician, a broad-shouldered C-Rank named Osei

4. The Power That Could Be Borrowed

The second requirement took longer to satisfy than Michael expected, not because Ryan was reluctant, but because acknowledgment, it turned out, wasn't something that could be rushed or manufactured. It had to be earned the slow way — through repetition, through trust surviving contact with failure, through Ryan watching Michael stay calm and precise even on the nights when a call came half a second late and cost them both a bruise or a scare. It happened, in the end, not during a triumphant victory but during a minor disaster. They were three weeks into their partnership, tackling a slightly harder dungeon than they should have attempted alone, when Ryan's discharge overcharged badly on a call Michael had gotten wrong — a genuine mistake, born of exhaustion rather than carelessness. The blast knocked Ryan flat, singed his jacket, and left him coughing in the dirt while a wounded frost-hound closed in for the kill.Michael didn't hesitate. He threw himself between Ryan and the monster w

5. The First Squad

Command Authority, Michael quickly learned, was not simply a number that climbed on its own. It grew only through use, through risk, through the slow, deliberate work of turning four separate individuals who barely knew each other into something that moved like a single organism. He stopped thinking of Ryan, Bram, Ines, and Farrow as four people he occasionally borrowed strength from, and started thinking of them as a squad — his squad, the first thing in his entire life that had ever truly belonged to him.He recruited two more over the following two months: a soft-spoken healer named Dahlia whose regeneration magic had been deemed "too slow for front-line use" by every guild that had ever tested her, and a lethally quiet assassin named Kestrel who worked so silently that most teams forgot she was even part of the formation until monsters started dropping around them.Dahlia had almost turned him away at the door of the small clinic where she worked, patching up low-rank hunters for c

6. Zero-Rank Leading High Rank

Word travels fast in a city built on rankings, and word of the "Zero-Rank Commander" — a title first used mockingly by a rival team and then, gradually, without anyone quite noticing the shift, used with something closer to grudging respect — began to reach ears far beyond the small training hall where it all started.Michael's squad started clearing dungeons at a pace that shouldn't have been possible for their combined rank average. Not because any single member of his team was extraordinary on paper, but because a battlefield commanded by someone who could see the entire fight the way Michael could left almost no room for the wasted motion, miscommunication, and hesitation that slowed down even elite guild teams. It was inevitable, in a city like this, that eventually a big guild would come calling. The invitation came from Ashen Vanguard — the same guild whose banner had hung over the stadium the day Michael had scored a zero in front of thousands of laughing strangers. A senior re

7. The Commander Who Couldn't Fight

Success, Michael was quickly learning, came with its own quiet cruelties. The victory against Corvin's team had made his name in the city's hunter community, but it had also revealed, in painful clarity, the true cost of the power he wielded. Borrowing an ability wasn't free. The stronger the skill, the heavier the toll on Michael's own body — a punishing drag of exhaustion, a headache like a spike driven behind his eyes, sometimes a trembling weakness in his limbs that lasted for hours after even a single use.And Squad Command, for all its power, only let him draw on two abilities at once. Beyond that limit, his own body simply couldn't bear the strain."You're pushing too hard," Dahlia told him one evening, checking his vitals after a routine dungeon run that had required three separate borrowed abilities within the span of ten minutes. "Your body isn't built for this kind of load, Michael. Zero combat rating isn't just a number on a readout. It means your physical frame has almost

8. One Body, Five Abilities

The moment Michael accepted the prompt, the world changed.Full Synchronization didn't feel like borrowing a single ability layered carefully on top of his own limited body. It felt like being unmade and rebuilt in a fraction of a second, every one of his five active Command Links pouring into him simultaneously, a flood of foreign strength crashing through a vessel never designed to hold even a fraction of it.Bram's shield energy wrapped around his entire body at once, a shimmering golden barrier thicker and more solid than anything the tanker had ever produced alone. Ines's frost magic crackled along his fingertips, no longer diminished to a fraction of her strength but burning at something close to its true potential. Farrow's heightened senses exploded outward through Michael's mind, every monster in the chamber suddenly visible with impossible clarity, their attack patterns laid bare half a second before they moved. Kestrel's speed poured into his legs, and Dahlia's regeneration

9. The Zero-Rank Commander

The S-Class dungeon tore open in the middle of the city on a gray Tuesday morning, a jagged rift of black light splitting the pavement of the central plaza without warning, and within hours every major guild in the district had mobilized their strongest hunters to respond.Ashen Vanguard sent their S-Rank team. Meridian Company sent two full squads of SS-Rank specialists. And rumor spread through the assembled crowd, with a kind of breathless disbelief, that a single SSS-Rank hunter — a legend most people had only ever seen in guild propaganda — had personally descended to join the response effort.Michael arrived with his own people, and the reaction from the assembled elite was immediate and cutting."Zero-Rank?" someone in the Ashen Vanguard formation muttered, just loud enough to carry. "What's he going to do down there, hand out water bottles?"Michael didn't answer. He didn't need to. Behind him stood his network — not the full hundred twenty-seven, but a carefully chosen core of
