The S-Class dungeon tore open in the middle of the city on a gray Tuesday morning, a jagged rift of black light splitting the pavement of the central plaza without warning, and within hours every major guild in the district had mobilized their strongest hunters to respond.

Ashen Vanguard sent their S-Rank team. Meridian Company sent two full squads of SS-Rank specialists. And rumor spread through the assembled crowd, with a kind of breathless disbelief, that a single SSS-Rank hunter — a legend most people had only ever seen in guild propaganda — had personally descended to join the response effort.

Michael arrived with his own people, and the reaction from the assembled elite was immediate and cutting.

"Zero-Rank?" someone in the Ashen Vanguard formation muttered, just loud enough to carry. "What's he going to do down there, hand out water bottles?"

Michael didn't answer. He didn't need to. Behind him stood his network — not the full hundred twenty-seven, but a carefully chosen core of his strongest, most deeply bonded Links, hunters who had been laughed at, dismissed, and discarded by every one of the elite squads now sneering at them from across the plaza.

The dungeon swallowed them all whole the moment the gate stabilized enough to enter.

Michael took his position at the rear of his formation, as he always did, unarmed, unarmored, his only true weapon the calm, unshakeable certainty in his own voice.

"Tanker, front and center, hold the choke point." "Mage, hold the left flank, don't release until my mark." "Scout, open the western corridor, we need an alternate route before the second wave." "Assassin, wait for the opening." "Now."

The dungeon's early chambers fell to his network with a precision that stunned even the elite guild squads working in parallel corridors nearby, word of the Zero-Rank commander's uncanny coordination spreading through the shared communication channels with a mixture of disbelief and, slowly, grudging respect.

It was in the dungeon's deepest chamber, beneath a cracked stone ceiling that seemed to pulse with its own malevolent heartbeat, that they finally found the boss.

RANK: SSS.

The creature that unfolded from the chamber's shadowed depths was massive beyond anything Michael's network had ever faced — a writhing, many-limbed horror that radiated raw destructive power in waves that made even his most seasoned Links flinch back on instinct. His squad, brave and skilled as they were, simply did not have the combined strength to bring something this powerful down. Michael could feel it in the shape of the battlefield laid out in his mind — every possible strategy ending, eventually, in his people overwhelmed and broken.

He took a slow breath, and reached for everything he had.

"Full Command Link," he called out, loud enough for every member of his core squad to hear. "All of you. Now."

[127 targets connected.]

[Command Authority: 49.8%.]

So close. Agonizingly, impossibly close.

The boss surged forward in a wave of destructive force before Michael's network had fully braced, and he watched, horror rising in his throat, as one of his newest recruits — a young former D-Rank hunter named Soren who'd joined only three weeks earlier, still barely trusting his own place in the network — took a glancing blow that sent him crashing against the chamber wall, motionless.

For one terrible second, Michael thought he had lost him.

He didn't think. He moved.

He crossed the chamber floor at a dead sprint, no borrowed speed carrying him, nothing but his own two zero-rated legs and the desperate, animal need to reach Soren before the boss's next strike finished what the first had started. He threw himself over the fallen hunter's body, shielding him with nothing but his own unaugmented flesh, and looked up at the towering horror bearing down on both of them.

For the first time in the entire fight, Michael didn't call out an order.

"I'm borrowing your strength," he said instead, quiet and fierce, the words meant for every single person bound into his network at once, whether they could hear him or not. "All of you. Right now. I need it."

Every Command Link in his network flared to life simultaneously, one hundred twenty-seven separate threads of trust and acknowledgment converging on a single point at the exact same instant.

[Command Authority: 50%.]

[EVOLUTION COMPLETE.]

The change didn't feel like the desperate, punishing flood of his earlier Full Synchronization. It felt like a door swinging open onto a room infinitely larger than anything he'd previously imagined, a vast, humming network of power settling into place around him like it had always belonged there.

COMMAND AURA → LEGION AUTHORITY

The System's description bloomed across his vision, clear and absolute.

[The user may borrow the abilities of every individual under their command.]

[No limit exists on the number of accessible abilities.]

[Borrowed strength scales with the size and loyalty of the network.]

Michael opened his eyes — he hadn't even realized he'd closed them — and felt a hundred different powers settle into awareness at once, a vast library of strength waiting for his call. Fire. Ice. Lightning. Barriers of light and stone. Regeneration deep enough to knit broken bone. The faint, distant echo of teleportation, borrowed from a recruit who'd joined only days ago and whom Michael had never personally seen fight.

All of it, available. None of it limited to two, or five, or even one hundred twenty-seven.

He rose from over Soren's unconscious body and faced the SSS-Rank horror with a calm that had nothing to do with his own personal strength, which remained, as always, precisely zero.

The fight that followed lasted only minutes. Michael moved through borrowed power after borrowed power with a fluid, instinctive grace, drawing exactly what each moment required and nothing more, his network's combined might flowing through him like water finding its natural course. When the SSS-Rank creature finally collapsed into motes of dissolving shadow, the entire chamber fell into a silence so complete that Michael could hear his own heartbeat.

His status window bloomed to life one final time, visible to every stunned hunter still standing in that chamber — Ashen Vanguard's elite, Meridian's SS specialists, even the legendary SSS-Rank hunter who had descended personally to handle a threat that, in the end, a Zero-Rank commander and his discarded army had finished first.

[MICHAEL STONE] RANK: ZERO STRENGTH: 0 COMBAT POWER: 0

Michael looked at those numbers — the same humiliating zeroes that had followed him since the day a stadium full of strangers had laughed at a boy who couldn't throw a single meaningful punch — and, for the first time in his life, he smiled at them without a trace of shame.

He finally understood.

He wasn't Zero-Rank because he lacked power.

He was Zero-Rank because the System had never possessed a framework for ranking a commander — for measuring a strength that lived not in one person's fists, but in the trust of everyone willing to stand behind him.

One final notification settled quietly into view, almost gentle after everything that had come before.

[Legion Authority has reached its first stage.]

[Second Stage Requirement: 1,000 loyal subordinates.]

Michael looked out at his network — Soren stirring awake against the chamber wall, Ryan already moving to help him up, Dahlia hurrying over with healing already gathering in her palms, one hundred twenty-seven people who had once been told, by a world built on cold arithmetic, that they were worth nothing at all.

One hundred twenty-seven, out of a thousand.

He allowed himself a slow, tired, genuinely happy smile.

"Well then," he said, to no one and everyone at once, his voice carrying easily through the settling dust of the chamber. "Let's go build the rest."

  • The Uncountable Army

Michael began recruiting the very next week, and this time, he didn't limit himself to hunters with obvious, untapped potential the way he had with Ryan or Bram.He went to the washouts. The forgotten. The ones the guild system had discarded entirely — low-rank hunters who'd never advanced past their starting classification, veterans too old and too injured to keep pace with the front-line meta, awakeners whose abilities had manifested so strangely or so weakly that no guild had ever bothered giving them a real chance.Every single one of them shared the same story, in one form or another: nobody had ever given them a chance. Nobody had ever looked past the number on their status card to ask what they might actually be capable of, given the right role, the right coordination, the right commander willing to see value where the System's cold arithmetic had seen none.Michael understood that story better than anyone alive."I'm not offering you a promotion," he told each new recruit, the

  • One Body, Five Abilities

The moment Michael accepted the prompt, the world changed.Full Synchronization didn't feel like borrowing a single ability layered carefully on top of his own limited body. It felt like being unmade and rebuilt in a fraction of a second, every one of his five active Command Links pouring into him simultaneously, a flood of foreign strength crashing through a vessel never designed to hold even a fraction of it.Bram's shield energy wrapped around his entire body at once, a shimmering golden barrier thicker and more solid than anything the tanker had ever produced alone. Ines's frost magic crackled along his fingertips, no longer diminished to a fraction of her strength but burning at something close to its true potential. Farrow's heightened senses exploded outward through Michael's mind, every monster in the chamber suddenly visible with impossible clarity, their attack patterns laid bare half a second before they moved. Kestrel's speed poured into his legs, and Dahlia's regeneration

  • The Commander Who Couldn't Fight

Success, Michael was quickly learning, came with its own quiet cruelties. The victory against Corvin's team had made his name in the city's hunter community, but it had also revealed, in painful clarity, the true cost of the power he wielded. Borrowing an ability wasn't free. The stronger the skill, the heavier the toll on Michael's own body — a punishing drag of exhaustion, a headache like a spike driven behind his eyes, sometimes a trembling weakness in his limbs that lasted for hours after even a single use.And Squad Command, for all its power, only let him draw on two abilities at once. Beyond that limit, his own body simply couldn't bear the strain."You're pushing too hard," Dahlia told him one evening, checking his vitals after a routine dungeon run that had required three separate borrowed abilities within the span of ten minutes. "Your body isn't built for this kind of load, Michael. Zero combat rating isn't just a number on a readout. It means your physical frame has almost

  • The First Squad

Command Authority, Michael quickly learned, was not simply a number that climbed on its own. It grew only through use, through risk, through the slow, deliberate work of turning four separate individuals who barely knew each other into something that moved like a single organism. He stopped thinking of Ryan, Bram, Ines, and Farrow as four people he occasionally borrowed strength from, and started thinking of them as a squad — his squad, the first thing in his entire life that had ever truly belonged to him.He recruited two more over the following two months: a soft-spoken healer named Dahlia whose regeneration magic had been deemed "too slow for front-line use" by every guild that had ever tested her, and a lethally quiet assassin named Kestrel who worked so silently that most teams forgot she was even part of the formation until monsters started dropping around them.Dahlia had almost turned him away at the door of the small clinic where she worked, patching up low-rank hunters for

  • The Power That Could Be Borrowed

The second requirement took longer to satisfy than Michael expected, not because Ryan was reluctant, but because acknowledgment, it turned out, wasn't something that could be rushed or manufactured. It had to be earned the slow way — through repetition, through trust surviving contact with failure, through Ryan watching Michael stay calm and precise even on the nights when a call came half a second late and cost them both a bruise or a scare. It happened, in the end, not during a triumphant victory but during a minor disaster. They were three weeks into their partnership, tackling a slightly harder dungeon than they should have attempted alone, when Ryan's discharge overcharged badly on a call Michael had gotten wrong — a genuine mistake, born of exhaustion rather than carelessness. The blast knocked Ryan flat, singed his jacket, and left him coughing in the dirt while a wounded frost-hound closed in for the kill.Michael didn't hesitate. He threw himself between Ryan and the monster
