Chapter 9: So, There Is Wolf Between Us?

Niff's two eyes and the gray wolf's two eyes locked eyes.

For a split second, a thought crept into Niff"s head: that necklace... does it belong to Arres? Did Arres not make it until the necklace was on the gray wolf's neck?

Wait.

There is still a feeling of propping up in Niff's heart. There was no way a wolf could take the necklace off Arres' neck just to put it on him. Or, it's also impossible, if Arres really didn't survive, he took off his necklace and put it on the neck of one of the wolves that attacked him.

What for?

Wolves are not human unless...

'GRRAAA!'

Niff's body jerked because the gray wolf suddenly threw the black wolf's body. The bite slipped away, and it seemed that the black wolf was dead.

Niff shifted his gaze from the black wolf to the gray wolf. The gray wolf's gaze didn't care about him in the least. Instantly Niff felt a shiver of fear and panic in his body.

Slowly, the gray wolf moved closer to Niff.

Slow, slow, slow.

Niff's body was stiff for no reason. He watched the gray wolf with fear, panic.

"D-don't come any closer!" Niff said to the gray wolf.

The result is nil.

The gray wolf kept walking very slowly approaching Niff. The glare in his eyes that glowed dark yellow made Niff's hairs stand on end.

"I told you, don't come any closer!" Niff gave a warning.

Surprisingly, the black wolf immediately attacked a second after seeing Niff's presence. But this gray wolf showed absolutely no signs of attacking.

Even though the gray wolf growled, baring its fangs, Niff didn't feel as much danger as facing the black wolf.

What does this gray wolf really want?

"I-I'll thank you... i-if you... stop..." Niff voice stuttered because of nervousness.

The gray wolf still wouldn't stop walking. On the other hand, Niff realized that as the distance between the two of them got closer, the gray wolf's steps slowed down.

Niff didn't know if his feelings were right or wrong. While watching the gray wolf from a not far distance before, Niff noticed something on the gray wolf's body.

The wolf's head gesture, which every few seconds, always moves broken. Repeatedly. Like someone stretching a sore neck.

Niff's brow furrowed. He tried to remember because he felt the gray wolf's gesture was very familiar to him. For a few seconds, Niff paid close attention to detail.

Unknowingly his body stood slowly on the sidelines watching the gray wolf. Niff narrowed his eyes. As his memories began to form abstract possibilities, Niff took a step.

One step, one step, and one step, slowly.

Alert and curious, Niff stretched out one hand as he got closer to the gray wolf. Niff's hands trembled slightly, worried that the gray wolf would attack him suddenly.

"NIFF! DON'T CLOSE IT!"

BANG!

A sudden burst of bullets shot from the side. Niff look in surprise and spontaneously jumped backwards, while the gray wolf reflexively moved backwards.

The bullet didn't hit the wolf's body.

'GRRRRR...'

The gray wolf turned its head and growled angrily in the direction where the shots had come from. Niff noticed someone running in a hurry carrying a long rifle.

"Niff!"

John. Why could John be here?

Niff gaped when John again positioned the shotgun towards the gray wolf.

"NO JOHN! DON'T SHOOT THAT WOLF!" Niff shouted a warning to John.

John would not listen. He remained focused on aiming at the gray wolf.

"No!" Once again Niff forbade.

Niff already knows why he feels familiar with the Arres necklace and the repeated gestures on the neck.

The gray wolf that saved Niff was Arres.

Unfortunately Niff's attempt to block the gray wolf's body failed.

Another bullet fired. Now, the bullet hit the wolf's body. Giving out a brief howl of pain, the gray wolf's body jerked back a few steps.

Niff's heart seemed to stop beating. He stared blankly at the gray wolf's body that slowly fell to the ground.

Then Niff's gaze shifted to John. Highlights flashes of anger.

"John, why did you shoot him?!" Niff's tone was high.

John was already standing in front of Niff. His breath is relieved.

"The wolf is dangerous, Niff. He will kill you," John answered with an annoyed look at the gray wolf's body.

"He's not dangerous John, he saved me!"

"Niff, he saved you because he wanted to eat you—"

"Arres can't eat me!"

When Niff said that, John immediately became silent. John's gaze that was both surprised and in disbelief moved to Niff.

"What are you saying?" asked John, his voice lowered.

With his shoulders heaving as his emotions rose, Niff turned his body. He was about to approach the gray wolf's body. But how surprised he was when he witnessed a strange sight.

The body of the gray wolf lying on the ground gradually deformed. The size is getting smaller. The fur on all four legs disappeared as it transformed into two human legs. Then the change spread upwards, his waist became a human waist.

Until finally the whole body of the gray wolf was now the body of Arres.

Niff was stunned. He had already guessed. But he couldn't deny his surprise because his guess was right.

"Arres?" Niff whispered.

On the ground, Arres' body lay limp. Arres' groaning sound was painful. On one of his legs there was a very clear bloodstain printed on his pants.

"Arres!" John panicked and suddenly ran towards Arres.

John's rifle had been tossed around carelessly.

Arres held his right leg with a long groan. His eyes were closed tightly, his face pained.

"Argghhh..." Arres' moaning voice was muffled because his body was curled up.

John and Niff sat on either side of Arres' body.

"Arres! Gosh, your blood..." John looked in shock and disbelief as he watched the blood flowing from the slit of Arres' pants.

"I told you not to shoot him!" Niff said angrily to John.

John shook his head regretfully. "I don't know. I didn't expect this to happen."

Niff frowned. Before he could say his question, John had rushed to lift Arres' limp body.

That night Niff didn't know that Arres would save him. So, Arres told him to leave so as not to witness this wolf's body change?
