Chapter 1
The Path of The Perfect Foundation
Leo kaelen moved in a low crouch, the reinforced polymer of his reclaim suit whispering against the shattered tile of what was once a Starbucks.
Outside the gaping hole in the wall, the canyons of Manhattan were choked with verdant, aggressive life. A giant, bioluminescent moss clung to the side of the Empire State Building, and the distant, guttural roar of a Titan-class beast echoed from the direction of Central Park. “Kaelen! You lagging again?” a sharp voice crackled in his earpiece. Leo tightened his grip on the standard issue pulse baton at his hip. “Just being thorough, Roric. This sector’s unstable.” A scoff was the only reply. Roric, a burly man whose family had minor ties to the Ironbloods, was the team lead. He made sure Leo never forgot his place. The team Leo, Roric, and two others was in the “Midtown Tangle,” a newly expanded zone where old office buildings had been violently fused with a petrified, aura-saturated forest. Their mission: secure a cache of Spirit-Growth Herbs rumored to be in the server room of this collapsed skyscraper. A simple, low-risk mission. But in the New Wilds, low-risk was a relative term. Leo’s gaze swept the room, his instincts, honed by three years of survival, prickling. His family’s lost bloodline, the Starseekers, had always been sensitive to energy flows. It was a faint, ghostly sense now, like a phantom limb, but it was the only advantage he had left. He felt a subtle, pulsing warmth from deeper within the ruin. The herbs. “Heat signature confirmed,” chirped Elara, the team’s scout, from her perch on a higher floor. “Concentrated life-force aura. No major beast signatures nearby. Looks clear.” “See, Dreg? Nothing to it,” Roric broadcasted. “Move in. Kaelen, you’re on point.” Of course, Leo thought, a familiar bitterness coating his tongue. The disgraced one always got to walk into the potential ambush first. He pushed down the resentment. It was fuel. He moved forward, his boots crunching on debris. The corridor ahead was dark, illuminated only by the faint green and blue glow of fungi clinging to the walls. The air grew thicker, the sweet scent intensifying. His phantom sense tingled stronger. The herbs were close. They reached a reinforced door, warped and half-melted, likely from the initial energy surge of the Revival. Roric gestured impatiently. “Pry it.” Leo wedged his baton into the gap and levered his weight against it. With a groan of tortured metal, the door gave way, swinging inward to reveal the server room. It was a treasure trove. The room was bathed in a soft, emerald light emanating from clusters of plants that had grown through the cracked floor, twining around the dead server racks. Their leaves were a perfect, shimmering jade, and at the center of each cluster were small, pulsating berries that glowed with condensed life energy. Spirit-Growth Herbs. Enough to be worth a small fortune on the Exchange, or to significantly boost a low-level cultivator at the Skin or Marrow Refining stage. “Jackpot,” breathed the fourth member of the team, Jax, a quiet man with no family affiliations. Roric’s face split into a greedy grin. “Alright, bag it all. Quick and clean.” They set to work, using specialized ceramic tools to carefully harvest the herbs and place them in null-field containers to preserve their potency. Leo worked methodically, his senses still on high alert. The tingling in his blood hadn’t subsided; it had grown stronger, more urgent. It wasn’t just coming from the herbs anymore. It was coming from beneath them. “Roric,” Leo said, his voice low. “There’s something else here.” “Shut up and harvest, Kaelen. Don’t ruin this with your paranoia.” “I’m serious. The energy signature… it’s deeper.” Elara’s voice came over the comms, a note of tension entering it. “Uh, guys? I’m getting some minor seismic activity on the bio-scanner. Very localized. Right on your position.” It was then that the floor trembled. A fine dust sifted from the ceiling. Everyone froze. The tremor came again, stronger this time. A deep, resonant thump, as if a giant heart were beating below the foundation. “The herbs…” Jax whispered, his face pale. “They’re not just growing here. They’re rooted in something.” The center of the room, a patch of earth that had burst through the concrete, began to bulge. The Spirit-Growth Herbs there withered in an instant, their life force sucked dry. The earth cracked open, and a wave of pure, malevolent aura washed over them, so thick it was hard to breathe. A head emerged. It was the color of bleached bone, slick with slime, and featureless save for a massive, circular maw lined with rows of rotating, crystalline teeth. It was a Grub-Spawn, a juvenile subterranean beast, but this one was enormous—far larger than any recorded. Its aura placed it at least at the peak of Organ Refining. “Fall back!” Roric yelled, his bravado evaporating. It was too late. The Grub-Spawn let out a chittering shriek that vibrated in their bones and surged forward, its segmented, worm-like body tearing through the floor. It moved with shocking speed, its maw aimed directly at Jax. Jax fumbled for his pulse rifle. The beast was on him before he could fire. There was a sickening crunch, a brief, choked scream, and then Jax was gone, swallowed whole. “Damn it!” Roric roared, unleashing a blast of his own Ironblood-enhanced strength. His fist, sheathed in gray, metallic Qi, slammed into the beast’s side. The impact sounded like a gong, but it only managed to stagger the creature, chipping a few of its crystalline teeth. The Grub-Spawn turned its attention to Roric, its featureless head somehow conveying rage. “Elara! Suppressing fire!” Roric bellowed, dodging a lunge. From above, energy bolts rained down, scorching the beast’s hide. They did little more than annoy it. Leo activated his pulse baton, the tip glowing with blue energy. He knew it was useless. Standard-issue gear was for dealing with feral dogs and low-level pests, not a mutated Organ Refining beast. This was a death trap. The herbs were the bait.Expand

13 Heavens: Rise Of The Bloodline Dreg The Queen's Lair
Lia slapped a heavy pouch of credit chips down on the bar. The bartender, the same man with the cybernetic arm, raised an eyebrow."Razor-Wing eggs. All five," Lia said, a proud smile on her face. "The alchemist from the Sylvan weavers nearly kissed me."The bartender grunted, a sound that might have been approval. He poured four glasses of actual whiskey, not the synth-stuff, and pushed them towards the team. "On the house. Don't get used to it."They took their glasses to a corner table, the mood buoyant. Ben was already counting his share of the credits, his eyes wide. Marc was quietly updating his maps, a satisfied look on his face."This calls for a celebration," Marc said. "A real one. We should hit the market, get some proper gear.""First, we pay off our debts," Lia said, ever the practical leader. She slid a stack of chips towards Leo. "Your share. And... thank you. We wouldn't have made it out without you."Leo took the chips. It was more money than he'd seen in years. But h

At the 72nd Street gate a massive wall of scrap metal and reinforced concrete Leo found his new team waiting.Lia was checking the charge on her heavy shock-baton. Marc was calibrating the scanner over his eye. Ben was nervously fidgeting with a pouch full of small, metallic orbs sonic traps."You're on time. Good," Lia said, her eyes appraising Leo. He still wore his simple Reclaimer clothes, but he carried a new confidence. "Stick to the plan. We get in, we get the eggs, we get out. No heroics.""Heroics are for people who can afford to die," Leo replied.Lia gave a grim nod of approval. "Exactly. Let's move."They passed through the gate, leaving the relative safety of the fortified sector behind. The air changed instantly thicker, wilder, filled with the chatter of unseen things and the roar of distant beasts. The streets were a jungle of shattered asphalt and colossal, twisting roots. The skeletons of old cars were draped with glowing moss.Marc took the lead, his scanner whirr

13 Heavens: Rise Of The Bloodline Dreg The Rusty Bolt
Leo pushed open the heavy, sound-proofed door and was hit by a wall of noise. Raucous laughter, the clink of glasses, and the low hum of a dozen conversations. The place was packed. Men and women with hard eyes and scarred skin the marks of countless fights in the Tangle clustered around tables. They wore a mix of scavenged military gear and custom-made armor infused with low-level beast cores. Pulse rifles and powered axes leaned against chairs. These were Hunters.Leo, in his simple, worn Reclaimer gear, stuck out like a sore thumb. A few people glanced his way, their eyes scanning him before dismissing him with a snort. He looked like what he was supposed to be: a nobody. He made his way to the bar, a long slab of pitted metal, and sat on a wobbly stool. The bartender, a huge man with a cybernetic arm, ambled over."What'll it be?" the man grunted, not even looking at Leo as he wiped a glass with a dirty rag."Information," Leo said, keeping his voice low.The bartender stopped w

13 Heavens: Rise Of The Bloodline Dreg The Iron Blood Inquisition
“A crystal?” Leo repeated, letting his voice sound tired and a little confused. He rubbed his eyes as if he’d just woken up. “Roric, what are you talking about? We were just trying to survive.”Roric flinched, still refusing to look at Leo. “I saw you,” he muttered to the floor. “You reached into its head. You pulled something out.”The lead guard, the one with the scar, didn’t move. His name was Kael, Leo remembered. A mid-level enforcer for the Ironblood family. “We’re not here for a debate, Kaelen. Hand it over. Now. All findings from the Tangle are property of the Reclaimer Corps, which operates under Ironblood oversight.”“There is no ‘it’,” Leo said, spreading his hands in a gesture of innocence. He channeled all his frustration at being a dreg into his performance. “Look at this place. Do you think if I found some valuable crystal, I’d still be living here? I’d have traded it for a better room, for real food!”Kael’s eyes narrowed. He took a step inside, his partner, a bulkier

13 Heavens: Rise Of The Bloodline Dreg Break Him or Make Him
The Reclaimer transport was a beat-up, armored truck that rattled as it sped through the broken streets. Inside, the silence was thick enough to choke on.Roric sat stiffly, cradling his broken arm and staring out the grimy window. His mind was a mess of pain, shame, and burning questions. How? How did Kaelen do that? He replayed the fight in his head the impossible speed, the crushing power, the calm authority. It wasn't the Leo Kaelen he knew. That Leo was a bitter, powerless dreg. This one... this one was something else.Elara kept sneaking glances at Leo, who sat across from her, eyes closed as if sleeping. But she could see the subtle shift in him. The way he held himself, like a coiled spring. The strange, clean scent that came off him, cutting through the stink of the Tangle. He had saved their lives. He had faced down an Organ Refining beast and won. She felt a healthy dose of fear, mixed with a spark of awe.Leo wasn't sleeping. He was communing with the System.[Marrow Ref

13 Heavens: Rise Of The Bloodline Dreg What are you, Kaelen?"
Roric’s face twisted from pain into fury. “You! You ran, you coward! You led us into this trap and then you ran!”Leo ignored him. His eyes were locked on the beast. He could see its aura now. A swirling, sickly green energy centered in its core. The Heart-Crystal. It pulsed like a diseased heart.“It’s weakened,” Leo said, his voice calm. It sounded different to his own ears. Clearer. “Its left side is slower. The injury runs deep.”“What do you know, you dreg?” Roric spat. “Get out of here before I kill you myself!”The Grub-Spawn decided for them. With a chittering shriek, it lunged, not at Roric, but at Leo. It sensed the new, pure energy in him. It wanted it.Time seemed to slow down for Leo. His Diamond Hide skin tingled, sensing the shift in the air. He didn’t try to run. He dropped into a low stance, his body moving on instinct.“Kaelen, move!” Elara screamed. The beast’ massive maw descended. Leo sidestepped with a fluid grace that shocked both his teammates. The crystalline
