As Duncan continued to observe, all of a sudden, the living person turned around and started making a beeline in his direction.

There was no mistaking it... he was definitely heading for Duncan’s location, especially when the person started waving his hands in the air at him and began shouting at the top of their lungs.

“Help! Please, you over there... help me!”

“Fuck!” Duncan cursed aloud.

There was no need to doubt it anymore; he had been discovered, and now this person was heading in his direction while leading an entire horde of zombies behind him.

Damn it!

The urge to repeatedly curse the person’s entire ten generations of family members rose up within Duncan, but he didn’t have the time for that.

Immediately, Duncan bolted upright and immediately turned around to run in the completely opposite direction.

As for helping the other person... don’t be stupid!

It was already lucky enough that Duncan hadn’t run up to him and beaten him to death, so don’t expect him to lend a helping hand just because the person asked.

Don’t forget that just seconds ago, Duncan was thinking about how to use the person as bait, so guess it was lucky for him that it didn’t happen... though it still remained to be seen if that would be the case later.

Seeing Duncan immediately stand up to run after hearing him call for help, the other person immediately panicked and quickly called out frantically.

“Hey, wait! Don’t run—help me!”

Yeah, right, as if. In your dreams, Duncan thought and continued running away.

As Duncan pretended he didn’t hear him and just kept running, the other person no longer called out to him but immediately put more strength in his legs and continued to sprint after Duncan.

Looking back, Duncan saw the person still chasing after him and frowned deeply.

He had to give it to them; this person was very tenacious and relentless.

Right now, they were close enough to allow Duncan to get a clear glimpse of the person running after him.

He was a middle-aged man, probably around the same age as Duncan, maybe a bit older. He was slightly chubby and was wearing a suit with a tie around his neck, looking like he was just returning from work when he suddenly entered here.

Noticing all this, Duncan was even more impressed by the man, feeling that he was very incredible for someone of his age.

You should know that men at this age, especially corporate drones, were usually not the healthiest they’d ever been due to not having enough time to exercise, and they mostly ate foods that weren’t exactly healthy.

It was evidently the case for this man too, with his chubby body that begged one to wonder when the last time he’d been to the gym was; and yet, here he was sweating buckets after having run who knows for how long, and yet he was still keeping pace with Duncan in front of him.

If this wasn’t impressive, then what was?

But the problem with this scene is that one living person running around for dear life had already caused a commotion amongst a few zombies... what then would happen when two living people were running as if their life depended on it—which it did, it definitely did.

Roar!

At the sight of two living beings, the zombies were immediately thrown into a frenzy which spurred them to chase after Duncan and the other man even more relentlessly and faster.

Even the zombies standing in front of the white conical exit were drawn away by Duncan and the man and immediately gave chase—all of them.

Damn it!

This was not looking good at all. With this many zombies chasing after him, it would make it harder to lose them and escape.

Thinking about it, Duncan decided to change tactics and immediately came up with a plan.

Slowing down his speed, Duncan caught his breath while waiting for the other man to catch up. Meanwhile, he ran his plan over and over in his head to make sure there was no problem with it.

Soon, the other man caught up with Duncan, his eyes welling up with tears at the sight of another living person so that he looked like he was just about to weep.

Panting heavily, the man, upon reaching Duncan, immediately started talking.

“Huff, friend, huff, wait up, huff, a second, huff...”

“Please slow down a little, will you?” The man said as he caught up to Duncan.

Duncan didn’t say anything and waited until they were running side by side; but before he could say anything, the man immediately started speaking once again.

“Phew, you sure run very fast, friend. But why did you run away like that... didn’t you see me waving and calling out to you for help? Instead, you just bolted without coming to help me at all,” he said with some grievance.

Urgh!

Not the foolish type, Duncan thought to himself, thinking that if the man was in his own shoes, he would’ve done exactly the same as he did, if not choosing to flee even faster than Duncan had.

But Duncan didn’t have time to dwell on that.

As the man continued speaking, Duncan was about to interrupt him when he suddenly paused after hearing something the man said.

“Listen friend, do you happen to know what is going on here and what those terrifying creatures that are chasing us are? The only thing I know is that I was walking down the street when all of a sudden I felt the world shift and found myself in an empty area with all those things surrounding me, looking like they were about to eat me alive.”

After hearing the last part of the man’s words, the words Duncan was about to speak suddenly froze on his tongue.

Immediately, Duncan turned to face the man with rapt attention and quickly demanded, “What did you say just now?”

“You found yourself where after appearing in this place?”

“What’s all this racket about?” Duncan uttered after regaining control of his body. While not fully recovered, Duncan was well enough now that his mind wasn’t feeling hazy, and the fire on his body no longer burned as fiercely. With that no longer being a concern, Duncan started observing his surroundings.Meanwhile, after seeing Duncan rise from the ground, Grant immediately mocked him in a sarcastic and derisive tone.“And the great detective lives. What a wonderful surprise. You were sleeping so soundly and for so long, I thought you’d already joined the dead and would wake up as a zombie—good thing that didn’t happen, or I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”“But imagine my surprise when I saw you sleeping here surrounded by so many zombies after abandoning me back there… again! I thought that with such a marvelously concocted plan you’d have left this place already, but instead, you decided to fall asleep in the midst of all these walking corpses.”“So then, tell me, De

“Hey, wake up.” A distant voice called out to him.Ugh!“My head!”Duncan could not focus at all. His mind was scattered by a splitting headache that assaulted him like a large foghorn blowing loudly in his cranium, making him unable to concentrate on anything.“Hey, is he gonna be okay? He hasn’t moved in a long while… maybe he’s dead.”“He’s not dead, although I would wish for nothing more.”There it was again—those voices. It seemed like two people talking to each other, but their words were sometimes hazy and incomprehensible, leaving Duncan lost in a murky state of confusion.“Who are they talking about?” Duncan wondered as he tried to gather his thoughts, but the headache was preventing him from doing so.The voices continued to speak to one another.“Huh, you wish he was dead? Why? Wouldn’t it be better if he lived so we can all come up with a way to get out of here?” the first voice asked in confusion, to which the second voice replied blandly and without emotion.“I hate to b

“No, no—please let me go. Don’t do anything to me. I don’t know anything, I swear I don’t know anything at all. I was doing what I was told. It was just a dare, you see—someone dared me to go into that street and said they’d pay me if I did, that’s all it was. I swear I didn’t mean to intrude at all. If I’d known this is what would happen, I wouldn’t have accepted that stupid dare at all. But I promise I won’t tell anybody about this if you all just let me go, so please let me off just this once… I’m begging you, please!”“Do any of you hear that ticking sound?”“Hmmm!”“Who’s making all that racket? It doesn’t sound like Grant at all.”Duncan, who was buried in the ground, slowly dug himself out with practiced ease, taking his time while doing it so as not to make too much of a commotion.Since he didn’t know where he was buried and what the situation was like outside, in order to avoid digging himself out only to end up being surrounded by zombies, Duncan took his time while digging

  • Duncan’s Curse

Going back a little to understand what was happening...It all starts with Duncan’s escape plan, but ignoring everything else, we must focus on the core of it all on which Duncan’s escape completely hinges upon... which were his boots. As already stated, Duncan’s boots were a pair of cursed supernatural objects that possessed special powers that are unimaginable to ordinary people. This power is the power to move through and between any region of space freely and without restraint. The emphasis here is on the lack of restraint! These boots were so powerful that it didn’t matter what barrier or restriction was in place; it could traverse itself along with its wearer into any location it desired. If so, why is such a powerful object considered cursed by Duncan? The answer is simple really... because they were impossible to control.A curse, in the simplest meaning of the term, is anything that carries the effect of misfortune.Be it an item, a relationship, or even an encounter—as long

  • Flourish Or Fall

Duncan witnessed the fall of Grant as he got piled upon by several zombies until he was completely covered up from sight. After a quick look to make sure he wasn’t being feasted upon like a rare delicacy, without a ripple in his heart, Duncan swiftly continued running ahead, unconcerned with Grant’s fate.“This confirms it,” Duncan mused.“The zombies aren’t out for blood; instead, they’re looking to capture us alive and probably take us back to the exit.”“Why... well, that’s what I have to figure out next.”Although Duncan had already confirmed his earlier speculation, it didn’t mean that he was going to surrender himself to be taken to the zombies to be taken away to the exit by them.Without knowing for what reason the zombies needed living people, it was still risky to approach without a plan.So what was Duncan going to do next?“Although surrendering and letting the zombies take me is the easiest way to get to the exit, the risk is too high, so I’d better stick to the original
