Ghost Realm

“Given the current circumstances, I’d say that I’m likely inside some kind of secret realm with a very strong possibility of it being related to ghosts.”

“The barren wilderness, death-like stillness, and that sudden weakness that overcame me moments ago… all of these point to haunting ghosts or similar spectral entities.”

Sigh!

Arriving at this conclusion, Duncan sighed once again, his frustration mounting as he double-checked the various clues just to reach the same conclusion.

His final conclusion was based on years of extensive jaw-dropping and near-death experiences in dealing with such phenomena, and needless to say, he wasn’t exactly happy with what he concluded.

“Not again,” Duncan lamented in exasperation.

“Of all the black-bellied creatures I could possibly be dealing with, why did it have to be ghosts?”

His face wore an expression of helplessness as he fell deep in thought…

Regarding ghosts, out of all the supernatural entities that existed in the world, ghosts were some of the most common types encountered by ordinary people, and they could be very troublesome to deal with.

Being spiritual bodies that are linked to souls and life force, they could often be found almost anywhere there was a strong presence of living beings gathered together—i.e., local villages, towns, and cities.

These entities, unlike the traditional view, are not simply born from the residual souls of deceased individuals but are more often created naturally in the world due to the cumulative presence of living creatures occupying a certain region for very long, along with a catalyst that aided in the existence of ghostly energy.

Living and dying are an integral part of the natural process of life. As people are born and grow, they generate a kind of spiritual energy stemming from the exuberance of their life force, and in death, this energy transforms and is fed back into the environment, thus creating a cycle of endless renewal and rejuvenation, thereby becoming the catalyst needed for the existence of ghosts to be possible.

Without this cycle of life and death, it is impossible for ghosts to exist. This is why in places where death has never occurred, it is impossible to find the presence of ghosts at all, leading people to believe that they are creatures born from the lingering spirits of the deceased coming back to haunt the living out of grievance for their death—which is a complete misunderstanding.

It didn’t help that ghosts sometimes take the forms of those that have died, but this is only due to the strong lingering emotions or obsessions of the deceased that sometimes linger long after death, influencing the form a ghost takes after forming. It is these emotions that make ghosts very dangerous entities to begin with.

Recalling what he knew about ghosts, Duncan thought, “Although ghosts are formed naturally in this world, they are greatly influenced by the environment in which they are born. As such, they can either be seen as harmless or completely disastrous.”

“But judging from the rumors regarding those missing people that later turned back up in a completely deranged and murderous state, I’m going to take a wild guess and say I’m dealing with a highly dangerous group of malicious ghosts.”

By now, Duncan had finished analyzing all that he could and reached his conclusion; as for the rest, he didn’t have enough information to determine exactly what he was dealing with.

Especially the cause of his sudden loss of strength just moments ago.

Thinking back to that moment and the feeling he got, Duncan shuddered involuntarily.

Were it not for his curse, Duncan was fairly certain that he would’ve died back then.

“It’s definitely not safe here. I don’t know what kind of ghosts I am dealing with here and I have no intention of finding out. I just have to get out of here as quickly as possible and try not to provoke any malicious entities that may reside here.”

With that thought, Duncan no longer hesitated, and he quickly prepared to set off to look for a way out of here.

“I definitely can’t go back the same way I came, so I’ll have to rely on you, old friend, to lead me out of here.”

Saying this, Duncan raised the pocket watch he’d been holding in his hand all along.

While thinking, Duncan had constantly kept a close eye on the clock hand of the watch to notice the instant it moved.

As a supernatural detective, Duncan’s life was a constant episode of unfortunate incidents and dangers that threatened to end his life on a daily basis.

Not many people in his line of work had lasted as long as Duncan had, with many either quitting or dying before they had the chance to do so.

The only reason Duncan could still do what he did while remaining alive was because of this pocket watch, which served as an early warning system that alerted him to the presence of danger wherever he was.

That is why Duncan cherished it so much; without it, he couldn’t do what he did at all.

But that wasn’t the only reason the locket was so important to Duncan.

Apart from its function as a supernatural danger detector and another deeper, more underlying significance it held, the locket had one other function.

Closing the pocket watch to reveal the brass body of the locket, Duncan turned it around to face the other side and once again pressed the switch at the top of it.

But this time, instead of releasing his finger instantly, Duncan pressed it for three seconds before releasing.

Immediately, the back side of the locket sprang open, revealing another item hidden within it.

It was a compass with a broken needle that constantly spun around.

As soon as the compass was revealed, the needle spun frantically for a few seconds before suddenly halting and pointing in a particular direction.

Seeing this, Duncan was elated and without any hesitation hurriedly walked in the direction the compass was pointing.

“What did you mean by what you said?” Little John asked, referring to Duncan’s warning. Instead of answering directly, though, Duncan asked a question in return. “Do you know why I left the police force?” Shaking his head, Little John answered, “I don’t know. It was just so sudden—when I heard you’d quit being a cop, I couldn’t understand why you’d done it, and then nobody heard from or had seen you for a long time, so I eventually stopped thinking about it.” “Don’t tell me…” Duncan raised his hand, stopping Little John from continuing what he was about to say. Then he pointed at the chair, gesturing for Little John to take a seat. Hesitating for a moment, Little John eventually sat down. Only after that did Duncan finally resume talking. “I quit the force because I discovered a whole new world that was completely different from the ones I’d known for so long. This world was extraordinary and beautiful, but it was also dangerous and bizarre. I couldn’t help but be sucked i

Duncan could see how scared Little John truly was, and he didn’t try to threaten him anymore. Instead, speaking placatingly, Duncan asked, “Other than the people that disappeared, you must have also noticed something else about this matter, didn’t you? Something you couldn’t explain or wrap your head around… that’s what really scares you, isn’t it?” Little John didn’t respond, but his silence was as much of an answer as any, and Duncan knew he was right. But before he could say any more, Little John suddenly stood up and dismissively spoke to Duncan. “That’s enough. I’m not going to answer any more of your questions. You can do whatever you want to me, I don’t care, but this conversation is over. You should leave now.” Saying all that, Little John turned around and was about to leave the stall, only for Duncan’s next words to stop him dead in his tracks. “Sit down!” Duncan ordered harshly. “If you’re not afraid of ending up dead without a corpse, then by all means, you can

Towards the end of Little John’s explanation, Duncan didn’t interrupt at all. He simply listened and fell into deep contemplation once he was done speaking. Little John’s words revealed a lot of information to Duncan, who began analyzing and organizing what he’d learned. First of all, it was now certain to Duncan that whoever was organizing this auction had used Little John to exclusively get his items into the city. There could be many reasons for this that Duncan could think of, but he dismissed most of them and focused instead on one possibility. To Duncan, the most likely reason why the auction organizer used Little John’s organization that was primarily made up of ordinary people must have something to do with the disappearance of Little John’s men. Perhaps there were some supernatural items that required a kind of sacrifice in order to move them, or perhaps a ritual of some kind was being conducted that required the lives of many people as a sacrifice. In either case, the

Staring coldly at Little John, Duncan accused, “You just lied to me. When I mentioned auction, you clearly reacted, which means you know something about it. So let’s try this one more time, but this time try not to lie to me, do you understand?” Without giving Little John the chance to respond, Duncan quickly followed up with another question. “What do you know about the auction happening two days later in the manor on the outskirts of the city?” This time, having been caught lying, Little John had no choice but to answer truthfully. “I don’t know much,” Little John started saying. He explained, “Several months ago, I received a huge deal from an anonymous person who wanted me to smuggle a lot of items into the city and deliver them to the manor over a long period of time.” “This was a very huge commission, and I readily agreed when I saw how much I was going to be paid to accept the job, but what I didn’t know at the time was how scary the job would actually be after I had ac

Duncan finally finished his meal, and when he was done, he asked for another refill of pineapple juice and then turned his attention to Little John. “So, I see you’ve done pretty well for yourself since the last time we talked. Decided to expand, eh—how’s that working out for you?” Starting off light, Duncan complimented Little John on his recent activities. But while it seemed like praise, there was actually a hint of sarcasm hidden within Duncan’s words. Little John knew this, and he responded less than pleasantly. “Yeah, the expansion has been great. Ever since I got my leash taken off, I’ve been able to spread my wings freely and grow. What about you, though, how’ve you been ever since you left your cushy job to become a deadbeat PI?” Duncan answered nonchalantly, “I won’t say I’ve been better off, but going private has its perks. More freedom for instance, less restraint from the law, not having to follow the rules all the time anymore… but then you know what that's lik

“Do I make myself clear?” Duncan asked one more time. This time, Little John responded with a nod, indicating he understood. “Good. Now hold on a moment, let me finish my breakfast. I don’t like to discuss business during a meal 'cause it affects the taste.” With that, Duncan continued eating the rest of his breakfast while Little John sat quietly observing him in secret, various thoughts going through his head. Little John, that is what people called him, but it wasn’t his real name. His real name was Shawn Mendalay, but ever since he started living with his uncle when he was little and started helping out in his stall, people started calling him Little John after his uncle, Old John. Since then, the name had stuck with Shawn forever. For Little John, he didn’t mind that his real name had been forgotten by almost everyone. To him, a name was just something you called yourself when you wanted to be identified, and just like the name Shawn had been changed and forgotten, name
