Chapter One

"What are you doing there? Walk faster and submit this to the nurse leader!" John, the gynecologist, commanded Richester seriously as he pushed a file into his hand.

"Yes sir." He took the file with utmost respect and returned to the leader's office.

Richester Winston worked at Mandela's hospital, one of the largest and famous hospitals in New York. It was owned by his in-laws and he was positioned as Madam Harriet's assistant. Madam Harriet was his mother-in-law who derived pleasure from seeing him suffer.

All he did was run around in the hospital without being allowed to attend to any patient. He only bore the name doctor without any practice. He was a general practitioner in the hospital even when he had a good medical result, his wife never allowed him to work. She saw him as someone who must remain under her.

"Ma'am, here is the file from Mr. John." He said courteously as he placed them on the nurse leader's table.

She was among the high level doctors in the hospital and knew all the plight he faced in the office.

Her office was spacious and square with nothing more than shelves holding medical books and medication. Her lab coat was hanging on the long hanger stand.

"Mr. John? Is that how to call him, you jerk!?" She yelled at his face and he lowered his head to the ground.

"You disgust me big time. I really don't know why you're here." She rolled her eyes in disgust.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. Though I don't know my offense." He said under his breath even though her aura was intimidating, it was obvious she heard it but scoffed in annoyance.

"Get lost!" She growled at his face and he rushed out of her office.

He got married to Stella Mandela, who's the Medical Director in the hospital. They were in love which prompted their marriage even when her parents were against it but everything came to an end when he wasn't up to her expectations and every company seemed to have issues with him. His curriculum vitae wasn't given the least consideration; it was as though failure followed him everywhere. Stella changed everything overnight, her surname and her attitude. That was also how their love faded.

While walking along the hospital hallway that had each hospital room, Richester heard a machine sound beeping so loud that there was no doctor or nurse in the room attending to the patient. He was anxious and surprised that a patient wasn't given the attention that was needed.

"This is bad." He had no choice but to enter the hospital room in a hurry without thinking of the consequences.

The patient was hijacking on the bed, vibrating so hard with his eyes closed and teeth vibrating.

Quickly, he checked his pulse and took a sharp look at the monitor. His consciousness rate was decreasing as well as his life controller. He didn't know the next step to take but he wanted to do something.

After a few seconds of observation, he suddenly knew what was happening. Immediately he took the necessary medicine from the rack and injected the patient with the injection.

He had to wait for a few minutes to see the result and gradually, everything came back to order and the patient became calm. He exhaled deeply because he knew what would happen to him if ever the patient died but he shivered in shock as soon as the door swung upon.

"What are you doing here?" It was Stella, his wife, she didn't hesitate to shout at his face as soon as she stepped in.

"I… I… I was only giving the patient an injection because he was near death." He was scared as he wasn't expecting her, he explained to her confidently even though she was a bit intimidating.

"An injection? Do you have a license? Do you even have any right to do that?" She sneered in disgust, having no respect for him.

"Which drugs did you use on him and how did you know it's the right drug?" The co-doctor that was beside her asked him spitefully. They had no respect for him since he was humiliated by his so-called family.

"I used Levetiracetam because I noticed he had a seizure of the brain. The left part." He informed them seriously because he knew the drug even if he was dumb.

"Who sent you?!" Her eyes were burning in anger as she queried him in annoyance.

"I'm not some piece of wood, Stella! I'm also a doctor here so I should do what I ought to do. Or do you expect me to watch the patient die?" Surprisingly, he raised an irritated brow at her which made her seem taken aback by his reaction.

"You now have the guts to speak, huh?" She approached him, looking fed up and he stared at her as though he couldn't move.

"I will teach you a lesson to stay still and not act!" She pulled him by his ear and dragged him out of the hospital room, the doctor that came with her smirked in mockery.

"But the man is alive. Why are you still annoyed?!" He cried out to her as she pushed him into her office and banged the door.

It was obvious that other nurses and staff were hovering on the door to listen to them because that has been their normal routine. He was already a laughingstock in the entire hospital.

"And where did you learn to raise your voice at me?" After her statement, a hot slap followed. He held his cheek, not so surprised.

"But what did I do? I only did what was right and I saved a life." He told her the truth in anger and she slapped his face again but this time it was so hard. He gritted his teeth in anger, looking helpless.

"It seems because we haven't flogged or scolded you this month, you are starting to act so bold." She curled her lips in annoyance, her voice was evading mockery.

It was the ringing of her office landline telephone that saved him from more sermons and scolding, she sighed and left him to answer the phone.

There's no ordinary day, just like the famous writer said.

The next morning, he woke up earlier than usual because of the patient's list he had to submit to his overbearing mother-in-law.

There were too many files in my arms that demanded attention thus he lost concentration of where he was going. It was when he bumped into someone that he returned back to reality.

"Oh no!" The whole files that he was holding flew up in the air and scattered everywhere.

He was annoyed but he didn't pay attention to the person, instead he started gathering them properly because he knew what was to come. If he wasted even the tiniest second, Madam Harriet, his so-called mother-in-law, would not only skin him alive but show him the inner interior of hell.

"You fool!" Suddenly, the person that had been standing before him kicked him so hard that he had to look up.

It was Mr. Robinson, the newest top investor that Stella managed to impress. He would invest in their company after so many considerations. He was doing Mandela's hospital a favor thus they valued him more than gold.

"Fool?" He stood up, looking annoyed.

Unfortunately, he couldn't figure out who the man was.

"Are you blind? Didn't you see me coming?" Mr. Robinson shouted at his face in anger while clicking his tongue.

"And didn't you see me too? We are both at fault here." He spat at his face.

Slowly, the staff started creating a circle and getting attracted by their action. That was what they loved the most, seeing Richester stumble into trouble.

"Seriously? I think you need to be checked up because your brain is numb! Are you nuts!" Mr. Robinson was rising in anger with fire raging from his disgusting looking eyes.

He was already having a change of heart, especially since Richester didn't treat him right.

"What's going on here? What did you do this time!" Stella elegantly approached them, looking so furious.

She has always been that way, especially when it had to do with her "stupid" husband. Her eyes were shooting at him like sharp daggers from a distance with her hair flying at her back, no doubt she was attractive and beautiful. Richester knew she was here for another action that would bring shame to him for the whole day.

"I was only telling this man the truth. He bumped into me and said it…." He stopped talking as soon as her hard hand rested on his face.

The staff who were present gasped in shock and some of them laughed at the ceremony.

"This man? Do you have the right to call him that?" She sneered in anger with her lashes batting at him.

Everyone was staring at them as if it was normal to watch Richester getting slapped.

He was caught off guard from the slap, and he didn't know what wrong he did that she slapped him.

He had to give the annoying gentleman a second look.
