Damon stared at the final message.

Archivist.

For several seconds, the word bothered him more than anything else they had found inside the pawnshop.

Not Hunter.

Not researcher.

Not someone who had accidentally discovered an Archive relic.

Archivist.

The same Path Damon had awakened less than two days ago.

Freya was still holding his arm from when the reconstruction nearly made him fall. She followed his gaze toward the phone.

“What did they say?”

Damon locked the screen.

Damon stared at the final message.Archivist.For several seconds, the word bothered him more than anything else they had found inside the pawnshop. Not Hunter. Not researcher. Not someone who had accidentally discovered an Archive relic.Archivist.The same Path Damon had awakened less than two days ago.Freya was still holding his arm from when the reconstruction nearly made him fall. She followed his gaze toward the phone.“What did they say?”Damon locked the screen.“That I wasn’t the first.”“The first what?”He looked at her. There were several answers he could give, but pretending ignorance had become increasingly impractical. Freya had seen an Archive organism, knew Damon could identify things her equipment could not, and had just watched him extract information from a seventeen-year-old core by standing near it.He still had no intention of explaining everything. But he needed someone with access to records he could not obtain himself.“Archivist.”Freya’s expression remaine

  • Chapter 11 — The Thing That Escaped Was Looking for Another Core

Freya arrived seven minutes later in a black Bureau vehicle that ignored at least three traffic laws before stopping outside Damon’s building.Damon was already waiting near the entrance. He had changed out of the shirt torn during the Stalker fight, cleaned the blood from his face and hidden the Adaptive Field Coat beneath an ordinary jacket. The Greyline short sword remained at his side, while the sixth-floor stairwell had been locked behind an emergency barrier.Explaining the dead Level 14 Ironclaw inside his building could wait until the immediate problem stopped moving across Westbridge.Freya lowered the passenger window. “Get in.”Damon opened the door. “You always greet people like that?”“You told me an unknown organism was hunting something through downtown Westbridge.”“Fair.”He climbed inside, and Freya accelerated before the door had fully closed. Damon pulled it shut and looked around. The vehicle was closer to a mobile laboratory than a car, with three screens across

The black claw pushed farther through the portal.Damon did not wait to see what followed it. He crossed the distance in two quick steps, drew the Greyline short sword and swung at the exposed limb.Steel struck black armor with a violent clang that numbed both hands. The claw barely moved.[Ironclaw Stalker.][Level: 14.][Mutation Tier: II.][HUNT active.]Information flowed across his vision.[Known Traits:][Sound Suppression.][Mana Concealment.][Accelerated Response.][Probable Weakness: Lower abdominal plating.]Useful information, but not while half the creature remained on the other side of a dimensional doorway. The Stalker withdrew its arm.Damon backed away immediately.A moment later, the creature smashed into the portal from inside Archive #0001.BANG.The black frame expanded.[Archive connection stability: 21% → 24%.]That was the real problem.Every impact made the opening more stable.Damon glanced toward his apartment door. He could run downstairs, call the Bureau

  • Chapter 9 — The Monster Core Started Beating

The Mutation Core pulsed again.Damon stood in the middle of the Hunter Market while people moved around him completely unaware that something inside his coat had apparently developed a heartbeat. He did not touch it.The anonymous message had been suspicious, invasive and irritatingly well timed, but so far the sender had known more about Archive #0001 than anyone Damon had met.Ignoring the warning just to prove he did not trust them would be stupid. He focused on the spatial storage instead.[Ironclaw Mutation Core.][Origin: Ironclaw Hunter.][Integrity: 41%.][Status: ACTIVE.][Mutation Catalyst Activity: Increasing.]That last line was new.“Define catalyst activity.”[Artificial adaptive agent detected within Mutation Core.][Internal restructuring in progress.]Damon’s expression tightened. The core had been damaged when he extracted it. It should have remained nothing more than an energy-rich organ.Instead, something inside it was waking up.His phone was still in his hand.

  • Chapter 8 — The A-Rank Genius Wanted My Secret

Damon did not reply to the message. Not immediately. He remained outside Vanguard Exchange with his phone in one hand, watching Hunters and merchants move along the crowded street while the words stayed on the screen. They can smell them from the other side.Vanguard Exchange occupied one of the larger buildings in the Westbridge Hunter Market, a commercial district that stretched across several blocks beneath the elevated transit line. Monster-processing shops, equipment stores, guild offices and appraisal centers filled nearly every storefront.Normally, Damon would have paid more attention to the place.Right now, the anonymous message mattered more. The most obvious interpretation was that carrying Mutation Cores between worlds attracted Ironclaws. That might explain why Archive #0001 had reacted so aggressively after he unlocked Monster Hunter Stage I, but it did not explain how someone in his own world knew about it.More importantly, the sender had known the Archive number. Not

  • Chapter 7 — The Guild Offered Me $30,000 for One Corpse

Someone else had brought something back.Damon studied the image on Freya Hart’s tablet again. The object was a black crystal veined with dull red light, roughly the size of a walnut. At first glance, it looked almost identical to the Mutation Cores stored inside his Adaptive Field Coat.Almost.The difference was small enough that most people would have ignored it, but Damon had spent hours handling Ironclaw remains inside Archive #0001. His cores had irregular red channels branching outward from the center. The one in Freya’s image showed three thicker lines spiraling around each other.“Can I see it closer?”Freya raised an eyebrow. “You just said you’ve never seen one.”“I haven’t.”“Then why do you want a closer look?”“Because you’re asking me about it.”“That isn’t an answer.”“It’s the one you’re getting.”Marcus stood beside Damon looking far too entertained by the conversation.Freya watched Damon for another moment before enlarging the image. He focused on the core, but Ide
