The darkness in the bedroom was absolute, heavy enough to feel like it was pressing against Samuel Gunawan’s chest. Outside, the city of Jakarta didn’t just wake up; it screamed. A dissonant, rhythmic wailing of sirens tore through the night air, underscored by the distant, rhythmic thud of something massive impacting the pavement miles away.

Samuel scrambled upright, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He pressed his back against the cold wall, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

"What the hell… what is actually happening out there?" he whispered to the empty, suffocating space.

His hands shook as he fumbled across the bedside table. His fingers brushed against a cold, smooth surface, his phone. He’d left it charging hours ago, but the power had been cut long before midnight. He squeezed the device, hoping for a flicker of light, a sign that the grid hadn’t completely abandoned him.

"Come on, work. Please, just work," he muttered, his voice cracking with the desperate tremor of a man staring into an abyss.

He pressed the power button, half-expecting the black screen to remain defiant. Instead, a strange, crystalline light erupted from the glass, illuminating his wide, sweat-streaked face. It wasn't the usual Android logo. It wasn’t a notification banner for a missed email or a social media alert.

The screen hummed with a soft, pulsing violet hue. In the center, a solitary, golden icon shimmered, shaped like an ornate, wing-tipped helmet. Beneath it, a single line of text appeared in an elegant, impossible font: DIVINE OS INITIALIZING.

"What? Divine OS? That’s not... I didn't d******d this," Samuel breathed, his eyes darting to the locked door of his apartment. "Is this a hack? Some kind of weird malware from the blackout?"

He tapped the screen. The icon expanded, consuming the entire display. A sleek, translucent interface materialized, displaying stats that made no sense.

User: Samuel Gunawan

Condition: Stressed / Near-Collapse

Current Environment: Sector 4 - High Risk

Status: Unregistered

"This is crazy. This is actually, totally insane," he muttered, shaking his head. "I need to call someone. Mom, Dad, anyone. Why isn't there a signal icon? What kind of phone is this even supposed to be?"

He tried to swipe back, to close the interface, but the screen locked him in. A new box popped up, vibrating against his palm with a low, sub-harmonic frequency.

Welcome, Traveler. The Old World has been wiped clean. Your transition begins now.

"Transition? My god, stop messing with me!" Samuel shouted at the glowing glass, his voice rising in panic. "I don't know who you are, but this isn't funny! People are dying out there, I can hear them!"

Silence followed, save for the frantic chaos of the street outside. Then, the phone’s speaker, which usually sounded tinny and cheap, began to resonate with a rich, impossibly deep acoustic quality.

"Calm yourself, Samuel. Panic is the quickest way to end up as a footnote in history," a voice spoke. It sounded like it was coming from everywhere at once, melodic and chillingly calm.

Samuel dropped the phone onto his duvet, scrambling backward until he hit the foot of his bed. "Who’s that? How are you doing that? How do you know my name?"

"I am Hermes," the voice replied, seemingly emanating from the very air of the room now. "And I am merely a facilitator of opportunity. You are currently in a state of terminal disadvantage. The city is falling, the systems are failing, and you possess nothing but your own fear."

"I have a life! I have a job! I have… I have rights!" Samuel stammered, though the words sounded hollow even to him.

"You have a pile of scrap metal and a ticking clock," Hermes countered, the voice smooth and indifferent. "But, because the alignment of your circumstances is quite fascinating, I am authorized to offer you a starter package. A 'Survival Pack,' if you will."

"A survival pack? What do you want for it? Money? My bank details? My identity?"

"Money is a ghost of a dead civilization, Samuel. I require something far more tangible, yet far less taxing," Hermes said. A prompt appeared on the phone screen: INITIATE SURVIVAL PACK? PRICE: 1x HUMAN PERSPECTIVE (MEMORABLE).

Samuel stared at the prompt. "A human perspective? What does that even mean? Is that a joke?"

"It is a trade," Hermes said, the voice softening. "You want to survive the night? You want to understand why your city is dissolving into ash while you sit in the dark? Accept the prompt. The cost is negligible. A small, singular moment of your life, gifted to the void. A fair exchange for the tools to outlast those currently screaming in the streets."

Samuel looked at his door. A massive boom rocked the building, sending a spiderweb of cracks dancing across his ceiling. Dust rained down on his shoulders. The sirens outside were being replaced by a low, guttural chanting that made his skin crawl.

"I’m going to die if I stay here," Samuel whispered, his logic buckling under the weight of the impossible. "If I say yes, will I get out of here? Will I be safe?"

"Safety is a relative term, Samuel. But you will be empowered," Hermes whispered.

Samuel looked down at the phone. His thumb hovered over the glowing YES button. The violet light grew brighter, casting long, grotesque shadows against the walls of his bedroom. The air in the room began to shift, smelling suddenly of ozone, old parchment, and wet earth.

"I don't have a choice, do I?" Samuel asked, his voice barely a breath.

"You always have a choice," Hermes said. "That is the cruelest part of the design."

"Whatever. Fine. Let’s do it. Just get me through this," Samuel said, his voice hardening with a sudden, desperate resolve.

He pressed his thumb against the screen.

The phone flared with the brilliance of a miniature sun. The room didn't just light up; it began to warp. The wooden floorboards under his feet groaned as if they were being pulled into another dimension. The peeling wallpaper bubbled and dissolved, revealing a metallic, silver foundation beneath the plaster.

Samuel felt his equilibrium shatter. As the room transformed, turning from a cramped, decaying apartment into something architectural and ancient, his final thought before the world shifted completely was that he had just sold something precious for a price he didn't yet understand.

"Initialization complete," Hermes said, his voice now echoing as if from a vast, vaulted chamber. "Welcome to the game, Samuel Gunawan."

  • Chapter 10: Ariana's Investigation

The wind whipped across the rooftops of Jakarta, carrying the cold, sterile smell of the laboratory’s destroyed interior. Samuel and Ariana didn't stop until they reached the relative safety of a construction scaffold three buildings away.Samuel leaned against a rusted steel beam, his breath coming in ragged hitches. He pulled the tactical tablet he’d looted from the Commander’s unconscious form out of his bag. "We got out. We’re actually out, Ari."Ariana was already hunched over a heavy, leather-bound folder they’d snagged from the lab’s archive shelf. She didn't look up, her eyes darting across the yellowed, handwritten entries. "Don't get comfortable. We aren't safe until we know what this stuff is.""It’s a data log, right? Just files?""It’s a history book, Sam," Ariana said, her voice tight. "Look at these dates. 2022. 2023. These entries... they predate the blackout by years."Samuel wiped the sweat from his forehead, his hands still trembling from the residual violet energy.

  • Chapter 9: A Stolen Destiny

The Commander didn't just stand there; he loomed, his presence filling the cramped hallway like a physical weight. The red glow from his tablet danced across the metallic walls, turning the sterile laboratory into a scene from a nightmare. Behind him, the two soldiers raised their rifles, their visors locked onto the supply closet door."Come on out, Samuel," the Commander repeated, his voice smooth, devoid of any genuine warmth. "There’s no point in hiding. The system already registered your arrival the moment you crossed the threshold of the lobby."Samuel pressed his back against the cool, corrugated metal of the wall, his chest hitching. He looked at Ariana, who was gripping her crowbar so tightly her knuckles were ghost-white. She leaned in, her voice a near-silent breath against his ear."He’s playing us, Sam. He wants us to move so he can get a clear shot," she whispered."He knows my name," Samuel whispered back, his voice trembling. "How the hell does he know my name?""Becau

  • Chapter 8: The Hive Sector

The descent from the roof was a harrowing exercise in silence. Every loose pebble shifted by their boots sounded like a gunshot in the oppressive stillness of the city. As they moved through the labyrinthine backstreets toward the Central Plaza, the air grew colder, thick with the metallic tang of the lingering violet haze."Keep your head down," Ariana whispered, her gaze scanning the skeletal remains of a bus stop. "The thermal variance in this sector is erratic. If there are things lurking in the shadows, they’ll be tracking our heat signatures."Samuel adjusted his grip on his jacket, his hand hovering near his pocket where the phone hummed with a low, constant vibration. "The app, Hermes, it says we’re less than two blocks away from the target location. It’s calling it the Central Plaza Vault."Ariana paused behind the cover of a rusted delivery truck, her eyes fixed on the looming, dark silhouette of a concrete building that sat just off the main plaza. "That’s the regional rese

  • Chapter 7: Strategic Alliances

The landing was less of a graceful arrival and more of a bone-jarring collision with the gravel roof of the neighboring building. Samuel hit the ground hard, his shoulder slamming into a concrete vent housing. The impact knocked the wind out of him, his world spinning into a kaleidoscope of grey sky and flickering violet shadows.Ariana didn’t waste a second. She grabbed his jacket and hauled him up before he could even register the pain."Get up, Sam! Don't just sit there like a target!"He stumbled to his feet, gasping, his heart thumping against his ribs like a trapped animal. Below them, the gap they had just jumped was already being swarmed. The violet-veined creatures were crawling over the edge of the previous building, their elongated, twitching limbs scraping against the brickwork like nails on a chalkboard."We... we made it," Samuel wheezed, clutching his side."We’re not safe yet," Ariana hissed, her eyes darting across the desolate rooftop. "Check your pocket. Is it still

  • Chapter 6: Hermes's True Voice

The metal of the vent cover groaned, a sharp, shrieking sound of shearing steel. Beneath them, the storage room was no longer just a room, it was a nest of tearing, grinding malice."We have to go, Sam! Now!" Ariana lunged for the next grating, her fingers slick with the sweat of pure adrenaline.Samuel didn't need to be told twice. He kicked his way through the internal junction of the HVAC system, his boots scraping against the corrugated walls. He scrambled upward, his knuckles bleeding where he’d scraped them raw on the sharp edges of the ducting."Wait," Samuel wheezed, his lungs burning with the chemical tang of ozone and dust. "The roof hatch. It’s right ahead."They reached the exit, a heavy, rusted square of iron. Ariana threw her shoulder into it, grunting as the frame buckled under her force. With a final, desperate heave, the hatch flew open, and they tumbled out into the cool, biting air of the Jakarta night. The city was a jagged silhouette of blackened skyscrapers, crow

  • Chapter 5: System Glitch

The air inside the pharmacy had turned stagnant, heavy with the metallic tang of ozone and the lingering scent of pulverized concrete. Samuel looked at Ariana, her eyes boring into him with a ferocity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The question hung between them, thick and suffocating."You're listening to something, aren't you?" she whispered, her voice a sharp, clinical serration. "And it's telling you exactly what to do next."Samuel jerked away, his chest heaving. He couldn't deal with this. Not now. Not while the world felt like it was shifting on its axis. He fumbled for his phone, his thumb slamming against the screen, desperate for some kind of reassurance, some kind of order."I’m not listening to anything, Ariana. I’m just trying to survive. Why are you making this so difficult?""Because you’re hiding things that are getting us killed, Samuel! You think I don’t see it? That light? It’s not just a tool. It’s changing you. Look at your own hands!"He loo
