The blinding white light didn't fade so much as it folded itself into the architecture. Samuel blinked, his retinas stinging, as the walls of his apartment solidified. The peeling floral wallpaper was gone, replaced by smooth, matte-grey alloy panels that hummed with a low-frequency vibration. His sagging bed was now a streamlined cot, and his cluttered desk had been replaced by a clean, minimalist workstation projecting a holographic display.

"Welcome to the Safe Zone, Samuel," Hermes’ voice resonated, no longer disembodied, but seemingly emanating from the phone now resting steadily on the desk. "Standard living conditions have been recalibrated to ensure your survival for the next phase. You are no longer in an apartment; you are in a Tier-1 Shelter Module."

Samuel scrambled to his feet, his hands trembling as he touched the cold, metallic wall. It felt solid, dense, and unnervingly clean. He spun around, searching for the door. It was gone, replaced by a circular iris hatch.

"What is this? Where did my stuff go?" Samuel asked, his voice high and thin. "My laptop, my clothes, my photos, where are they?"

"They were clutter, Samuel. Irrelevant data for a traveler of your status," Hermes replied, sounding almost bored. "The 'Human Perspective' you traded has already been processed. Your baseline cognitive capacity has been sharpened to account for the current shift in reality. Do you feel that?"

Samuel paused. He took a deep, shaky breath, expecting the usual constriction in his chest, but his mind felt unnervingly clear. The panic was still there, like a dull roar in the background, but his focus was razor-sharp. He could track the individual sounds of the city outside, the distant, wet tearing of flesh, the rhythmic thud of heavy limbs on concrete, and the high-pitched, harmonic whine of the violet light.

"I feel... like I’ve had three cups of coffee," Samuel muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Wait. You said I’m in a shelter. Does that mean the city is... gone?"

"The city is currently undergoing a systemic purge," Hermes said. "The infection you hear in the streets is a biological overclocking of the local populace. They are no longer your neighbors, Samuel. They are biomass."

"Biomass? You're talking about people!" Samuel shouted, slamming his palm against the metallic wall. "That’s my floor neighbor, Pak RT! He’s been checking on me since my dad died. You’re telling me he’s just... biomass?"

"The entity you knew as Pak RT ceased to exist the moment his neural pathways were rewritten by the ambient energy," Hermes replied smoothly. "Would you like to continue this ethical debate, or would you like to ensure you aren't the next subject of such a rewrite?"

Samuel fell silent, his shoulders slumping. The clarity provided by the system was a double-edged sword; it made him understand exactly how helpless he was. "Fine. What do you want me to do? You mentioned a survival pack."

"Your integration into the system requires an immediate calibration of your biological defenses," Hermes said. A new icon appeared on the phone screen: a blue vial. "There is a medical supply depot three blocks away. It houses a Kinetic Stimulant. Retrieve it, and your body will be capable of processing the environmental pressure of this new world."

"Three blocks? Are you crazy? It’s a war zone out there!" Samuel pointed toward the iris hatch. "You heard the screams. What if I walk out there and get turned into whatever those things are?"

"Then your story ends in the first chapter. A statistical inevitability," Hermes said, his voice devoid of sympathy. "However, the System has granted you a 'Beginner’s Grace.' You have an active cloak for exactly one hour. It will not hide you from the infected if you walk directly into them, but it will obscure your presence from their sensory periphery."

Samuel picked up the phone. It felt heavier now, warm and pulsing. "Why me? Why give me all this? What’s the catch?"

"There is no catch, Samuel. Only an investment," Hermes replied. "I need data. You provide it by surviving. Shall we?"

Samuel looked at the iris hatch. "If I don't go, do I lose the 'Safe Zone'?"

"The shelter is a gift, not a right. It will dematerialize the moment the timer on your mission expires, whether you are inside or out," Hermes said. "I would suggest you move. The air quality in the city is degrading rapidly."

Samuel swallowed hard, his throat dry. He shoved the phone into his pocket and placed his hand on the circular panel. It hissed, retracting with a sound like a pressurized seal breaking. A blast of cold, metallic air rushed in, carrying the copper tang of blood and the pervasive, cloying scent of ozone.

He stepped out into the hallway. The familiar wallpaper of his apartment building was shredded, hanging in long, bloody ribbons. The lights flickered in a pattern that reminded him of a failing heart.

"Focus, Samuel," he whispered to himself. "Just three blocks."

He crept down the staircase, his heart hammering against his ribs. The silence of the hallway was worse than the screaming outside. Every creak of the floorboards sounded like a gunshot. When he finally reached the ground floor, he peered through the shattered glass of the lobby entrance.

The street was a graveyard of abandoned cars and pulsating, violet-tinted vegetation that seemed to be growing out of the cracks in the pavement. In the center of the street, a figure stood motionless. It was hunched, its limbs elongated and twitching in a rhythmic, violent spasm. Its skin was translucent, showing the faint, glowing violet veins of the infection beneath.

"Is that...?" Samuel began, his voice barely a whisper.

"That is a low-level host," Hermes whispered in his ear. "It has detected your ambient heat signature. It is preparing to lunge."

"You said I was cloaked!" Samuel hissed, stepping back into the shadows of the lobby.

"The cloak hides you from their primary sight, not their predatory instinct," Hermes said. "You have two choices, Samuel. You can run and hope its reflexes are slower than yours, or you can utilize the 'Beginner’s Buff' currently pulsing in your inventory."

Samuel fumbled with the phone, his fingers shaking. He tapped the glowing icon. A surge of energy flooded his arm, a feeling like a thousand tiny needles prickling his skin. His arm felt heavy, powerful, and strangely detached.

The creature’s head snapped toward the lobby. It didn't have eyes, just a smooth, featureless surface where a face should be. It let out a sound like grinding metal and bolted forward, closing the distance between them in a blur of motion.

"Now, Samuel," Hermes commanded.

Samuel didn't think. He didn't have time to be afraid. He swung his arm, the air whistling as the energy-infused strike tore through the space in front of him. A shockwave of violet light erupted from his knuckles, slamming into the creature with the force of a wrecking ball.

The sound of the impact was sickening—a wet, crunching thud that echoed through the empty street. The creature was thrown backward, its body shattering against a rusted sedan. It didn't get up. It dissolved, turning into a cloud of iridescent mist that evaporated into the night air.

Samuel stood there, panting, his hand still glowing with a faint, dying light. He looked at his fist, his heart racing. "I... I killed it."

"You deleted a corrupted process," Hermes corrected. "Do not get sentimental. The mission is not complete. Your progress is currently 10 percent. The pharmacy is still two blocks away, and I detect three more signatures approaching your location."

Samuel looked toward the dark, twisted street ahead. The fear was still there, deep and cold, but underneath it, something else was starting to stir a dark, hungry curiosity.

"Three more?" Samuel asked, his voice steadying.

"They are moving fast," Hermes said. "What will you do, Traveler?"

Samuel tightened his grip on the phone. "I’m going to the pharmacy."

The wind whipped across the rooftops of Jakarta, carrying the cold, sterile smell of the laboratory’s destroyed interior. Samuel and Ariana didn't stop until they reached the relative safety of a construction scaffold three buildings away.Samuel leaned against a rusted steel beam, his breath coming in ragged hitches. He pulled the tactical tablet he’d looted from the Commander’s unconscious form out of his bag. "We got out. We’re actually out, Ari."Ariana was already hunched over a heavy, leather-bound folder they’d snagged from the lab’s archive shelf. She didn't look up, her eyes darting across the yellowed, handwritten entries. "Don't get comfortable. We aren't safe until we know what this stuff is.""It’s a data log, right? Just files?""It’s a history book, Sam," Ariana said, her voice tight. "Look at these dates. 2022. 2023. These entries... they predate the blackout by years."Samuel wiped the sweat from his forehead, his hands still trembling from the residual violet energy.

  • Chapter 9: A Stolen Destiny

The Commander didn't just stand there; he loomed, his presence filling the cramped hallway like a physical weight. The red glow from his tablet danced across the metallic walls, turning the sterile laboratory into a scene from a nightmare. Behind him, the two soldiers raised their rifles, their visors locked onto the supply closet door."Come on out, Samuel," the Commander repeated, his voice smooth, devoid of any genuine warmth. "There’s no point in hiding. The system already registered your arrival the moment you crossed the threshold of the lobby."Samuel pressed his back against the cool, corrugated metal of the wall, his chest hitching. He looked at Ariana, who was gripping her crowbar so tightly her knuckles were ghost-white. She leaned in, her voice a near-silent breath against his ear."He’s playing us, Sam. He wants us to move so he can get a clear shot," she whispered."He knows my name," Samuel whispered back, his voice trembling. "How the hell does he know my name?""Becau

  • Chapter 8: The Hive Sector

The descent from the roof was a harrowing exercise in silence. Every loose pebble shifted by their boots sounded like a gunshot in the oppressive stillness of the city. As they moved through the labyrinthine backstreets toward the Central Plaza, the air grew colder, thick with the metallic tang of the lingering violet haze."Keep your head down," Ariana whispered, her gaze scanning the skeletal remains of a bus stop. "The thermal variance in this sector is erratic. If there are things lurking in the shadows, they’ll be tracking our heat signatures."Samuel adjusted his grip on his jacket, his hand hovering near his pocket where the phone hummed with a low, constant vibration. "The app, Hermes, it says we’re less than two blocks away from the target location. It’s calling it the Central Plaza Vault."Ariana paused behind the cover of a rusted delivery truck, her eyes fixed on the looming, dark silhouette of a concrete building that sat just off the main plaza. "That’s the regional rese

  • Chapter 7: Strategic Alliances

The landing was less of a graceful arrival and more of a bone-jarring collision with the gravel roof of the neighboring building. Samuel hit the ground hard, his shoulder slamming into a concrete vent housing. The impact knocked the wind out of him, his world spinning into a kaleidoscope of grey sky and flickering violet shadows.Ariana didn’t waste a second. She grabbed his jacket and hauled him up before he could even register the pain."Get up, Sam! Don't just sit there like a target!"He stumbled to his feet, gasping, his heart thumping against his ribs like a trapped animal. Below them, the gap they had just jumped was already being swarmed. The violet-veined creatures were crawling over the edge of the previous building, their elongated, twitching limbs scraping against the brickwork like nails on a chalkboard."We... we made it," Samuel wheezed, clutching his side."We’re not safe yet," Ariana hissed, her eyes darting across the desolate rooftop. "Check your pocket. Is it still

The metal of the vent cover groaned, a sharp, shrieking sound of shearing steel. Beneath them, the storage room was no longer just a room, it was a nest of tearing, grinding malice."We have to go, Sam! Now!" Ariana lunged for the next grating, her fingers slick with the sweat of pure adrenaline.Samuel didn't need to be told twice. He kicked his way through the internal junction of the HVAC system, his boots scraping against the corrugated walls. He scrambled upward, his knuckles bleeding where he’d scraped them raw on the sharp edges of the ducting."Wait," Samuel wheezed, his lungs burning with the chemical tang of ozone and dust. "The roof hatch. It’s right ahead."They reached the exit, a heavy, rusted square of iron. Ariana threw her shoulder into it, grunting as the frame buckled under her force. With a final, desperate heave, the hatch flew open, and they tumbled out into the cool, biting air of the Jakarta night. The city was a jagged silhouette of blackened skyscrapers, crow

  • Chapter 5: System Glitch

The air inside the pharmacy had turned stagnant, heavy with the metallic tang of ozone and the lingering scent of pulverized concrete. Samuel looked at Ariana, her eyes boring into him with a ferocity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The question hung between them, thick and suffocating."You're listening to something, aren't you?" she whispered, her voice a sharp, clinical serration. "And it's telling you exactly what to do next."Samuel jerked away, his chest heaving. He couldn't deal with this. Not now. Not while the world felt like it was shifting on its axis. He fumbled for his phone, his thumb slamming against the screen, desperate for some kind of reassurance, some kind of order."I’m not listening to anything, Ariana. I’m just trying to survive. Why are you making this so difficult?""Because you’re hiding things that are getting us killed, Samuel! You think I don’t see it? That light? It’s not just a tool. It’s changing you. Look at your own hands!"He loo
