The air inside the pharmacy had turned stagnant, heavy with the metallic tang of ozone and the lingering scent of pulverized concrete. Samuel looked at Ariana, her eyes boring into him with a ferocity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The question hung between them, thick and suffocating.

"You're listening to something, aren't you?" she whispered, her voice a sharp, clinical serration. "And it's telling you exactly what to do next."

Samuel jerked away, his chest heaving. He couldn't deal with this. Not now. Not while the world felt like it was shifting on its axis. He fumbled for his phone, his thumb slamming against the screen, desperate for some kind of reassurance, some kind of order.

"I’m not listening to anything, Ariana. I’m just trying to survive. Why are you making this so difficult?"

"Because you’re hiding things that are getting us killed, Samuel! You think I don’t see it? That light? It’s not just a tool. It’s changing you. Look at your own hands!"

He looked down. His fingertips were stained with a faint, pulsing violet hue, as if he’d been handling toxic ink. He quickly shoved his hands into his pockets, his heart racing.

"I don't have time for this," he muttered, his eyes glued to the dark, unresponsive screen of his phone. "Hermes? Hermes, give me a status report. What's the next objective?"

Silence. Nothing but the muffled, rhythmic thudding from the street outside.

"Hermes? Don't do this now. We’re in the middle of a hot zone!"

Firmware Update: 12%...

"Are you kidding me?" Samuel hissed, his voice cracking. "A firmware update? Right now? You have got to be joking!"

"What? What is it?" Ariana moved closer, her grip on the crowbar tightening. She was scanning the shattered windows of the pharmacy, her posture coiled like a spring.

"It’s... it’s updating. The OS is freezing everything. It’s useless for a few minutes," Samuel said, feeling the blood drain from his face.

"Updating? You’re telling me your 'secret weapon' decided now was the perfect time to install a patch?" Ariana let out a harsh, jagged laugh. "We’re sitting ducks, you idiot."

"I know that! Don't you think I know that?" Samuel paced in a tight circle, his eyes darting toward the front of the store. "The screen is locked. It’s just showing a loading bar."

"Great. Fantastic. You dragged me into a suicide mission for a phone that needs a software update," she snapped, stepping toward the counter. "How long? How many minutes until this thing starts working again?"

"I don't know! It just says 'Firmware Update in Progress.' There’s no countdown. It could be ten seconds, it could be ten minutes."

"We don't have ten seconds," Ariana said, her voice dropping to a low, lethal hum. She pointed toward the shattered front entrance.

Through the jagged glass, the shadows were no longer stagnant. They were converging. The rhythmic, grinding sound had grown louder,  chorus of snapping joints and tearing fabric. It wasn't just a stray pack anymore. They were being hunted.

"They found the resonance, didn't they?" Ariana asked, her eyes narrowing. "That last fight. You made too much noise."

"I saved your life," Samuel spat, his anxiety veering into anger.

"And now you’re going to be the reason we both lose it. Get down!"

She tackled him behind the sturdy, reinforced counter just as a heavy, hulking shape crashed through the remains of the pharmacy door. A wet, tearing sound filled the air, followed by the clatter of display shelves being leveled.

Samuel crouched in the dark, his back pressed against the cold metal casing of the pharmacy safe. He stared at the phone. The loading bar was stuck at 44 percent.

"44 percent," he whispered. "Come on, damn you. Work."

"Stop staring at that piece of junk and look at the floor," Ariana hissed. She was peering through a gap in the counter. "They’re flanking us. Two on the left, one crawling across the ceiling tiles."

Samuel felt a cold sweat break out across his brow. "Ceiling tiles? You’re joking."

"Do I look like I’m joking?" She shifted her weight, the crowbar glinting in the faint, ambient moonlight filtering through the debris. "If that phone doesn't wake up in the next thirty seconds, we’re going to have to make a break for the back exit. Can you run?"

"I can run," Samuel said, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to stay steady. "But I’m not leaving the device. If I lose this, I’m just a guy in a hoodie waiting to be turned into biomass."

"Then you better hope your 'God's' update finishes before they find the gap in this counter," she whispered.

The silence that followed was agonizing. Outside, the world felt like it was holding its breath. Then, a sharp, piercing screech cut through the store, a sound so high-pitched it made Samuel’s teeth ache.

"They know," Ariana murmured. "They’re signaling."

"What do you mean, signaling?"

"They’re calling for backup. Samuel, we have to move. Now!"

"The update is at 78 percent! If I pull the battery or the sync breaks, I might lose everything!"

"If you stay here, you’re going to lose your head!" Ariana grabbed his shoulder, her fingers digging in. "Look at me. Forget the phone. Trust your instincts. You were a human being before you were a 'Traveler' or whatever that thing calls you. Use your head!"

Samuel looked at her. Her face was smudged with dirt, her eyes wide with a terrifying, beautiful clarity. She was terrified, but she was sharp. She was real.

"There's an alley behind the storage room," Samuel said, his voice steadying. "If we jump through the back vent, we can reach the service lane."

"Good. That’s a plan," Ariana nodded, her gaze fixed on the shadows creeping around the corner of the pharmacy shelves. "I’ll take the lead. You keep that thing tucked away. Don’t use it until I tell you to. Can you do that?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I can."

"Then on three," she whispered. "One."

The creatures were getting closer. He could hear their wet, labored breathing, the sound of elongated limbs dragging across the tile.

"Two."

Samuel gripped the phone, the metal casing burning hot against his palm. The screen was still stuck at 89 percent.

"Three! Move!"

They burst from behind the counter. Samuel didn't look back, even as he heard the screech of a creature lunging for the spot he’d occupied a second before. Ariana was a blur of motion, her crowbar swinging in a wide, vicious arc that cleared a path through the hanging rubble.

They tore through the storage room, knocking over crates of expired medicine and shattered lightbulbs. Samuel could feel the vibration of the floorboards beneath him, the entire building was settling, shifting under the strain of the infestation.

"Vent! Over there!" Ariana pointed toward a narrow, reinforced metal hatch near the ceiling.

She vaulted off a stack of supply crates, hooking the crowbar into the frame and heaving with everything she had. The metal groaned and gave way.

"Go! Get up there!" she shouted, shoving him toward the opening.

Samuel scrambled up, his hands slipping on the smooth alloy of the wall. He clawed his way into the vent, his breath hitching as he felt a cold, clammy hand brush against his ankle. He kicked out wildly, hearing a sickening crunch as his boot connected with something that felt far too much like human bone.

"Ariana! Grab my hand!"

She leapt, her fingers reaching for his. He pulled her up just as the storage room door burst inward, a tidal wave of twitching, violet-veined limbs flooding the space.

They collapsed into the narrow, claustrophobic tunnel of the vent, the metal echoing with the frantic, rhythmic tapping of the things below.

"Close it!" Ariana gasped.

Samuel slammed the vent cover shut and locked the latch, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. They huddled there in the suffocating darkness, the air thin and metallic.

"We’re clear," Ariana breathed, her voice echoing in the small space. She reached out, her hand finding his in the dark. It was the first time she’d touched him without suspicion.

Samuel reached into his pocket. He pulled out the phone, expecting the usual violet glow.

He froze.

The screen wasn't violet. It wasn't the calm, cool interface of the Divine OS.

The display was a deep, angry, blood-chilling crimson.

A single line of text pulsed in the center, slow and rhythmic, like a beating heart.

CRITICAL ERROR: SYSTEM COMPROMISED. PERSPECTIVE LOSS DETECTED.

Samuel stared at the red light, his breath hitching in his throat. The device felt colder now, almost vibrating with a hostile, jagged energy.

"Samuel?" Ariana’s voice was small, fearful. "Why is it red? Why is the light red?"

Samuel didn't answer. He couldn't. He looked at the red text, then at the vent cover, which was beginning to buckle under the weight of something heavy pushing from the other side.

"It’s not an update," Samuel whispered, the realization turning his blood to ice. "It’s a warning."

The wind whipped across the rooftops of Jakarta, carrying the cold, sterile smell of the laboratory’s destroyed interior. Samuel and Ariana didn't stop until they reached the relative safety of a construction scaffold three buildings away.Samuel leaned against a rusted steel beam, his breath coming in ragged hitches. He pulled the tactical tablet he’d looted from the Commander’s unconscious form out of his bag. "We got out. We’re actually out, Ari."Ariana was already hunched over a heavy, leather-bound folder they’d snagged from the lab’s archive shelf. She didn't look up, her eyes darting across the yellowed, handwritten entries. "Don't get comfortable. We aren't safe until we know what this stuff is.""It’s a data log, right? Just files?""It’s a history book, Sam," Ariana said, her voice tight. "Look at these dates. 2022. 2023. These entries... they predate the blackout by years."Samuel wiped the sweat from his forehead, his hands still trembling from the residual violet energy.

The Commander didn't just stand there; he loomed, his presence filling the cramped hallway like a physical weight. The red glow from his tablet danced across the metallic walls, turning the sterile laboratory into a scene from a nightmare. Behind him, the two soldiers raised their rifles, their visors locked onto the supply closet door."Come on out, Samuel," the Commander repeated, his voice smooth, devoid of any genuine warmth. "There’s no point in hiding. The system already registered your arrival the moment you crossed the threshold of the lobby."Samuel pressed his back against the cool, corrugated metal of the wall, his chest hitching. He looked at Ariana, who was gripping her crowbar so tightly her knuckles were ghost-white. She leaned in, her voice a near-silent breath against his ear."He’s playing us, Sam. He wants us to move so he can get a clear shot," she whispered."He knows my name," Samuel whispered back, his voice trembling. "How the hell does he know my name?""Becau

The descent from the roof was a harrowing exercise in silence. Every loose pebble shifted by their boots sounded like a gunshot in the oppressive stillness of the city. As they moved through the labyrinthine backstreets toward the Central Plaza, the air grew colder, thick with the metallic tang of the lingering violet haze."Keep your head down," Ariana whispered, her gaze scanning the skeletal remains of a bus stop. "The thermal variance in this sector is erratic. If there are things lurking in the shadows, they’ll be tracking our heat signatures."Samuel adjusted his grip on his jacket, his hand hovering near his pocket where the phone hummed with a low, constant vibration. "The app, Hermes, it says we’re less than two blocks away from the target location. It’s calling it the Central Plaza Vault."Ariana paused behind the cover of a rusted delivery truck, her eyes fixed on the looming, dark silhouette of a concrete building that sat just off the main plaza. "That’s the regional rese

The landing was less of a graceful arrival and more of a bone-jarring collision with the gravel roof of the neighboring building. Samuel hit the ground hard, his shoulder slamming into a concrete vent housing. She grabbed his jacket and hauled him up before he could even register the pain."Get up, Sam! Don't just sit there like a target!"He stumbled to his feet, gasping, his heart thumping against his ribs like a trapped animal. Below them, the gap they had just jumped was already being swarmed. The violet-veined creatures were crawling over the edge of the previous building, their elongated, twitching limbs scraping against the brickwork like nails on a chalkboard."We... we made it," Samuel wheezed, clutching his side."We’re not safe yet," Ariana hissed, her eyes darting across the desolate rooftop. "Check your pocket. Is it still
