The metal of the vent cover groaned, a sharp, shrieking sound of shearing steel. Beneath them, the storage room was no longer just a room, it was a nest of tearing, grinding malice.

"We have to go, Sam! Now!" Ariana lunged for the next grating, her fingers slick with the sweat of pure adrenaline.

Samuel didn't need to be told twice. He kicked his way through the internal junction of the HVAC system, his boots scraping against the corrugated walls. He scrambled upward, his knuckles bleeding where he’d scraped them raw on the sharp edges of the ducting.

"Wait," Samuel wheezed, his lungs burning with the chemical tang of ozone and dust. "The roof hatch. It’s right ahead."

They reached the exit, a heavy, rusted square of iron. Ariana threw her shoulder into it, grunting as the frame buckled under her force. With a final, desperate heave, the hatch flew open, and they tumbled out into the cool, biting air of the Jakarta night.

The city was a jagged silhouette of blackened skyscrapers, crowned by an oppressive, roiling sky. There were no lights, no hum of traffic, only the distant, rhythmic thunder of the purge.

Samuel collapsed onto the gravel roof, gasping for air. He pulled the phone from his pocket. The crimson light was still pulsing, bleeding into the darkness like an open wound.

CRITICAL ERROR: SYSTEM COMPROMISED. PERSPECTIVE LOSS DETECTED.

"Still red," Samuel whispered, his hands trembling. "Why is it still red?"

Ariana crawled over to him, her chest heaving. She wasn't looking at the city anymore; she was staring at the device in his palm as if it were a bomb with a ticking timer. "Get rid of it, Sam. Whatever that thing is, it’s pulling them straight to us. Look at the horizon."

Samuel looked. Between the jagged teeth of the high-rises, he could see them, dozens of flickering, violet points of light moving in formation, converging on the pharmacy building they had just vacated.

"They're tracking the signal," he muttered, horror dawning on him. "I led them right to the pharmacy. I led them to us."

"Stop talking about the signal!" Ariana snapped, grabbing his wrist. "We need to drop the device and move. If we can get to the next building, maybe we can lose them in the maze of the residential district."

Before Samuel could answer, the air around his head began to vibrate. It wasn't the sound of the wind. It was a pressure, a sudden, sharp cavitation of the atmosphere right next to his ear.

"Ariana, get back," Samuel hissed, scooting away.

"What? What are you doing?"

"Just... just give me a second!"

He didn't need the phone speakers anymore. The voice didn't come from the device. It was inside his head, sharp, cold, and resonant, like a blade carving through bone.

“Control your associate, Samuel,” the voice echoed. It was Hermes, but stripped of the melodic, digital sheen. It sounded ancient, bored, and profoundly dangerous. “Her lack of understanding is becoming a kinetic liability.”

Samuel clutched his head, his fingernails digging into his scalp. "Who are you? Why are you in my head? You were supposed to be on the screen!"

“I am everywhere the architecture of this world allows,” Hermes whispered, his voice curling around Samuel's consciousness. “The 'Divine OS' was merely a courtesy for your primitive interface. You have proven yourself to be a significant, if clumsy, asset. Do not waste the opportunity.”

"Asset? I’m a person! I’m a guy from an apartment!" Samuel shouted, his voice cracking.

Ariana jumped back, her eyes wide as she watched him. "Sam? Who are you talking to? There’s no one here!"

"It’s him!" Samuel cried, pointing at the empty air. "He’s right here! Can’t you hear him?"

“She cannot hear me, because she is not part of the iteration,” Hermes sneered. “She is background noise. Dispose of the emotional attachments, Traveler. They are the primary reason for your 'Perspective Loss.' You are leaking humanity into the void, and it is making the system unstable.”

"I won't! I'm not leaving her!" Samuel scrambled to his feet, shielding Ariana with his body. "You promised me survival! You promised me a way out!"

“Survival is the mandate. Ethics are the debris,” Hermes replied. The voice felt like needles pressing into Samuel's eardrums. “Look at your hand, Samuel. The violet is fading. You are weakening. If you wish to retain your status, you will terminate the liability and proceed to the extraction point at the financial district.”

Samuel gasped, looking down at his hand. The faint glow he’d used to fight the creatures was indeed dimming, leaving behind only the pallor of his own skin. He felt a profound, hollow exhaustion, a feeling as if someone had reached into his chest and pulled out a gear he didn't know he was missing.

"I’m not a killer," Samuel whispered.

“You have already killed,” Hermes retorted. “You have already destroyed. The only difference now is whether you do it with purpose or by accident. Choose, Samuel. The pack is closing in on the stairwell. If you do not accept the terms of the next phase, the 'Beginner's Grace' expires. You will become biomass within the hour.”

Ariana stepped up beside him, her face tight with a mixture of terror and desperation. "Sam, talk to me! What is it saying? Why are you shaking like that?"

Samuel looked at her. He saw the genuine, raw fear in her eyes, the same fear he had felt when he was in his bedroom, back when his world was just homework, rent, and his father’s old desk. He looked at the red screen of the phone, now flickering with a countdown.

10:00... 09:59...

"He wants me to leave you," Samuel said, his voice trembling.

Ariana’s expression hardened. "Who? The voice in your head? The 'God'?"

"He says you’re a liability," Samuel said, tears stinging his eyes. "He says if I keep you with me, we both die. He says the system won't allow two survivors."

"Then he’s a liar," Ariana said, her voice steely. She stepped closer, reaching out to take his hand. "Don't listen to him, Sam. We found the vent. We made it to the roof. We can find a way to beat this thing, but not if you let it dictate who you are."

Samuel looked at the empty air, then at the red countdown. 09:45.

"He’s not lying about the pack," Samuel said, pointing to the stairwell door. The heavy steel was starting to warp, the hinges screaming as something immense pounded against it from the other side. "They’re coming up."

“The choice is yours, Samuel,” Hermes whispered, his tone chillingly detached. “Data suggests you are too sentimental to discard the asset. Very well. Let us see how much your humanity is worth when the cost is your own extinction.”

"I’m not discarding her!" Samuel roared at the empty air.

Ariana didn't flinch. She grabbed his arm, pulling him toward the edge of the building. "If we’re going to die, we do it fighting, not by selling our souls to some glowing piece of junk! We jump to the next building, Sam! It’s only a ten-foot gap. We can make it!"

Samuel looked at the jump, a terrifying leap over a dark, yawning abyss of a hundred stories. He looked at the stairwell, where the door was finally beginning to buckle. He looked at the phone.

He didn't drop it. He shoved it deep into his pocket, his jaw set in a line of grim, desperate resolve.

"Okay," Samuel said, his voice barely a whisper, but it carried a new, colder weight. "We jump. But Ari? If we make it to the other side, don't look back. Don't ever look back."

"I never do," she said, her grip tightening on his hand.

They ran. They didn't look at the sky, or the creatures, or the glowing red light in Samuel's pocket. They sprinted toward the edge, their boots thundering against the gravel.

As they leaped into the void, the last thing Samuel heard was the faint, mocking laugh of a deity, echoing in the wind as if he were already a ghost.

"See you on the other side, Traveler," Hermes murmured.

Samuel didn't answer. He just held on to Ariana, terrified, shattered, but still breathing.

The wind whipped across the rooftops of Jakarta, carrying the cold, sterile smell of the laboratory’s destroyed interior. Samuel and Ariana didn't stop until they reached the relative safety of a construction scaffold three buildings away.Samuel leaned against a rusted steel beam, his breath coming in ragged hitches. He pulled the tactical tablet he’d looted from the Commander’s unconscious form out of his bag. "We got out. We’re actually out, Ari."Ariana was already hunched over a heavy, leather-bound folder they’d snagged from the lab’s archive shelf. She didn't look up, her eyes darting across the yellowed, handwritten entries. "Don't get comfortable. We aren't safe until we know what this stuff is.""It’s a data log, right? Just files?""It’s a history book, Sam," Ariana said, her voice tight. "Look at these dates. 2022. 2023. These entries... they predate the blackout by years."Samuel wiped the sweat from his forehead, his hands still trembling from the residual violet energy.

The Commander didn't just stand there; he loomed, his presence filling the cramped hallway like a physical weight. The red glow from his tablet danced across the metallic walls, turning the sterile laboratory into a scene from a nightmare. Behind him, the two soldiers raised their rifles, their visors locked onto the supply closet door."Come on out, Samuel," the Commander repeated, his voice smooth, devoid of any genuine warmth. "There’s no point in hiding. The system already registered your arrival the moment you crossed the threshold of the lobby."Samuel pressed his back against the cool, corrugated metal of the wall, his chest hitching. He looked at Ariana, who was gripping her crowbar so tightly her knuckles were ghost-white. She leaned in, her voice a near-silent breath against his ear."He’s playing us, Sam. He wants us to move so he can get a clear shot," she whispered."He knows my name," Samuel whispered back, his voice trembling. "How the hell does he know my name?""Becau

The descent from the roof was a harrowing exercise in silence. Every loose pebble shifted by their boots sounded like a gunshot in the oppressive stillness of the city. As they moved through the labyrinthine backstreets toward the Central Plaza, the air grew colder, thick with the metallic tang of the lingering violet haze."Keep your head down," Ariana whispered, her gaze scanning the skeletal remains of a bus stop. "The thermal variance in this sector is erratic. If there are things lurking in the shadows, they’ll be tracking our heat signatures."Samuel adjusted his grip on his jacket, his hand hovering near his pocket where the phone hummed with a low, constant vibration. "The app, Hermes, it says we’re less than two blocks away from the target location. It’s calling it the Central Plaza Vault."Ariana paused behind the cover of a rusted delivery truck, her eyes fixed on the looming, dark silhouette of a concrete building that sat just off the main plaza. "That’s the regional rese

The landing was less of a graceful arrival and more of a bone-jarring collision with the gravel roof of the neighboring building. Samuel hit the ground hard, his shoulder slamming into a concrete vent housing. The impact knocked the wind out of him, his world spinning into a kaleidoscope of grey sky and flickering violet shadows.Ariana didn’t waste a second. She grabbed his jacket and hauled him up before he could even register the pain."Get up, Sam! Don't just sit there like a target!"He stumbled to his feet, gasping, his heart thumping against his ribs like a trapped animal. Below them, the gap they had just jumped was already being swarmed. The violet-veined creatures were crawling over the edge of the previous building, their elongated, twitching limbs scraping against the brickwork like nails on a chalkboard."We... we made it," Samuel wheezed, clutching his side."We’re not safe yet," Ariana hissed, her eyes darting across the desolate rooftop. "Check your pocket. Is it still

The air inside the pharmacy had turned stagnant, heavy with the metallic tang of ozone and the lingering scent of pulverized concrete. Samuel looked at Ariana, her eyes boring into him with a ferocity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The question hung between them, thick and suffocating."You're listening to something, aren't you?" she whispered, her voice a sharp, clinical serration. "And it's telling you exactly what to do next."Samuel jerked away, his chest heaving. He couldn't deal with this. Not now. Not while the world felt like it was shifting on its axis. He fumbled for his phone, his thumb slamming against the screen, desperate for some kind of reassurance, some kind of order."I’m not listening to anything, Ariana. I’m just trying to survive. Why are you making this so difficult?""Because you’re hiding things that are getting us killed, Samuel! You think I don’t see it? That light? It’s not just a tool. It’s changing you. Look at your own hands!"He loo
