Rex could feel the blazing heat of danger right behind him and his instincts forced him to turn.
His eyes locked straight into the hypnotic stare of the snake beast.
He tried to move, to step away, but his whole body felt glued to the ground. For a few seconds, his life flashed before his eyes. He remembered everything, all the beatings, the insults his parents had received and the laughter that echoed through the ceremony halls.
For the first time in his life, he had felt hope escape into his soul, but only for a moment.
It seemed like this was how everything was going to end.
Then something snapped.
The snake's body yanked off the way like it had been yanked by an invisible force and just like that, Rex could move again.
He stumbled back, his heart pounding against his ribs cage.
He clutched his chest, breathing hard, and finally, Rex looked at what had saved him.
There it was—Lung in his full form, standing between him and the snake, scales gleaming like rubies. It shimmered with pride like saving its master's life was something obvious. Required. Nothing special.
Then it growled and spat at Rex
'Like don't get it twisted, I didn't do it for free' before turning toward Annoid's beast with a deeper, colder growl.
Annoid was stunned, still trying to process what just happened in his raging mind.
For a beast to push his Gold-class snake out of the way like it was nothing, it had to be on par with Ruby class at minimum. That wasn't just rare—that was bordering on impossible.
He tried to wrap his head around it. The scenes replayed in his mind.
"Could it be?" The thoughts tried to cross his mind.
But he was certain.
Everyone had seen it. How the pathetic earthworm had appeared during the Awakening. Even if Rex had somehow faked that, there was no way the truth changed. It had been, in front of everyone, a useless earthworm.
"Seems you have some secrets," Annoid hissed, his voice shaking slightly. "Too bad they're going to end now!"
"Your tricks could never frighten me Trash, you are a worthless nobody and everything else that takes after you can only be the same, worthless. "
Lung growled angrily, like he could hear Annoid.
He pointed ahead. "Jim, show them what we're made of. Show them the border between pathetic and actual importance. "
The snake slithered across the floor, moving at such speed it was barely visible, the hall instantly engulfed but its death instincts.
Even Rex felt fear for his beast for a moment. That thing was fast, venomous and deadly.
But the Lung Dragon didn't move from where it stood. It just watched, lazily, like all this was child's play.
A smile cut across Annoid's lips as his snake lunged high into the air and dove at the Lung Dragon with deadly precision.
"This isn't even a fair fight," he whispered under his breath.
The snake's jaws opened wide, venom dripping from its fangs.
Then it just stopped.
It froze mid-strike and dropped to the ground like a rock, its body completely unmoving.
Rex blinked.
His dragon had used the exact same skill the snake had used against him earlier.
Only this time, there wasn't even the slightest hint of struggle. Instead, the snake shook like it was standing in front of something it wasn't worthy to breathe near. Like it was in the presence of ancient royalty.
"Devour yourself."

Rex's eyes almost burned out of their sockets."If you're trying to embarrass me, it's working!" he gruntedMore jeers rolled of the lips of the spectators and this time, even more intense. Rex was forced to take another peek at his nonchalant looking beast.Lung's mockery soon melted into a scoff, slowly trotting towards his direction with renewed laziness and pride."I don't know if you're just slow but you should realize already that I'm not a regular beast. Even the most simple things for other beasts requires extensive rituals for me! At least after the third trial you should have gotten that! I didn't expect you to be also dumb amongst other things!"Those words stung Rex to his bones. Beasts were supposed to be totally subject to their tamers, mindless things usually embodying the owner's personality. But this rogue was something else.Rex's eyes arched in utter frustration as the beast listed out the hand signals Rex needed to pull."First, draw a circle in the air with your
Lung's Mockery
"I'm declining the offer!" Rex replied casually. He wasn't the one to give a damn about PR.Boos and jeers filtered through the halls in roaring waves, immediately followed by murmurs of condescending words."His family has never grown a pair of balls over the last few decades, I really wasn't expecting anything else.""Haha, that's actually the best option if you ask me, at least he knows his place and who he shouldn't mess with!"Standing over at the other end of the counter, Emma's face flushed red with embarrassment.Even though they were nothing but forced partners in a sense, anything attributed to your partner in this world was also attributed to you.Shame boiled right through her lungs but there was nothing else that she could do other than look at him with her eyes rolling in spite. The feeling of watching his mortal enemy go under the tons of insults hauled at him caused a lasting sweet sensation of happiness to rise right through Harold's guts. However, that wasn't enough,
The Challenge
Emma's eyes instantly lits up with a spiral of expectations and hope. She looked at Rex's earth worm with spite and then her eyes strutted towards the majestic looks of the Royal eagle."You're sure you can help?" Emma's eyes glimmered as she waited for a response. "We can discuss the details over dinner." He handed an invitation card over and she attempted to go with him but Rex quickly stopped her, a frown glazing over his face."Should I have to remind you that we have our first training session today?"Those words caused Emma to scoff and roll her eyes at the same time."That's the point that you are not getting Mr. Trash, I would give anything just to be the farthest away from you that I possibly can! Besides, who wouldn't want to have fun with someone like Harold instead of wasting time with a cursed bloodline failure!"Harold's face lit up with triumph. He slid close to Rex and whispered into his hearing with venom dripping from every word."Don't worry about the training, Rex
The Betrayal
Anger pulsed through her skin in waves."You can't do this. I can't be stuck with this loser for the rest of the academic session!""I am afraid but that's the fixed rule and there is really nothing that I can do about it!" The guardian quickly replied, apologies filling his voice but Emma wouldn't take it.She turned to Rex."You did this deliberately didn't you? You couldn't keep that slacked d**k to yourself and decided to ruin my life with your horniness didn't you!” The cores of the halls shook by her ravaging again. She paused, then her eyes grew wild.“You have to forfeit, right now!" She glared at Rex like he was something that crawled out of the gutters."You're not the only one who's unsatisfied by the results Emma, I would have done that already before you even thought of it if that were possible." Rex replied calmly. But it only flared Emma's rage even further. "And who do you think is stupid enough to believe such lies? You've been stalking me for so long, I am sure you
Enemies Renewed
"You! What have you done!"Rex had almost forgotten that he was with someone in the hall.Annoid jerked up from the ground with a growl, his eyes maddened with rage."I'm going to make sure that you're dead!" He attacked Rex who slid out of the way and shoved a fist into his stomach, sending him flying through the hall.Rex was shocked at the impact of the fist that connected, his body feeling every bit lighter. Blood poured from Annoid's mouth and he instantly fainted."We need to leave right now!" said Rex.Annoid was still nobility and he had not grown enough to start throwing everyone's dead weight around or he would be dead any moment. "And you need to change back to your initial form, people are afraid of what they do not know and we would not want anyone experimenting on you. For Annoid, we will find an explanation later!"Lung grumbled before returning back to his original form.Soon, Rex was in the waiting room where they would stay for a few weeks and learn about the arcane
First Fight 2
Rex heard the voice of his beast. Not out loud, but in his mind, ravaging with dripping ice and hostility, like a god whispering from far away. And like a puppet on strings, the Gold-class snake turned its head down and sank its own fangs into its own body.Annoid's eyes bulged. "What are you doing, Jim?! Stop! You should be attacking him, not yourself!" he screamed with a cracking voice. But the snake didn't even flinch at his voice. It didn't hear him. It just kept biting into its own flesh, tearing its own scales, chewing its own body apart like it was the most natural thing in the world.Fear slammed through Annoid's spine in cold waves. He turned toward Rex, rage and panic mixing in his voice."Tell that demon to stop whatever it did to my Jim right now!"He pointed a shaking finger. "You know my family! You know how powerful we are! You wouldn't like what we're going to do to you! I'll make the rest of your life miserable!"Anger pulsed through Rex's blood. He hated this. Hated
