Chapter 82: Cyclophosphamide
The wind howled through the jagged cliffs as our dropship touched down on the scorched earth, rotors kicking up debris like the warning breath of a storm. I was the first out, boots slamming hard against rock, scanning the valley through my visor’s combat overlay. The air shimmered faintly with leftover portal energy—this was definitely the site. I tapped the side of my helmet. “Eagle Squadron, fan out. Triangular formation. Carter, you’re on my six.” “Copy,” Carter’s voice buzzed through the comms, cool and focused. I watched as my squad emerged behind me—Ethan and Julian Styles on the front, both Tankers, armor thicker than reinforced steel. Manipulators Emily, Ava, and Julian Blackwood took the rear-left, their suits glowing faintly as they synced with the electromagnetic field. Lucas, Logan, and Carter—my assassins—moved like shadows, each one ghosting into a vantage point. Rangers Liam, Elijah, and Gabriel flanked us with rifles at the ready. The ground shook before we even s
Chapter 81: New Experience
Kyle's POVWe all had dinner and a couple of drinks—maybe too much drinks. Cause by the time we went to bed, everyone was a bit tipsy. Sam's meal turned out to be great. And everyone, including Katherine admitted this. The meal —a big pot of sweet potato and lentil soup, with hunks of sourdough bread and bowls of sesame chicken—was really tasty to be frank. At the dining table, we chatted about a lot of stuff. But what I really couldn't take my mind off from, was the fact that Carter was seamlessly getting along with Katherine and Samantha. Most especially Katherine. We went to bed a bit late, even though every one was feeling exhausted. And for some totally incomprehensible reason, Carter opted to sleep on the couch. Both Katherine and Sam slept in separate rooms, and I was left alone to one of the rooms in the apartment. Now the night wasn't turning out the way I had Imagined it to.It wasn't until midnight that I heard a knock on the door. Subtle. Clear. Accompanied with a “Kyle
Chapter 80: Principal Katherine Halsey
Kyle's POV "Wait a minute!!" Sam exclaimed, trying her best not to scream. "You don't mean it." "I do!" Katherine said all smiles. Wow! I just couldn't really believe it. Dr. Katherine Halsey, the new principal of Necrus High School. Damn! "Awwn. Congratulations." Samantha said as she moved closer to hug her. "Congratulations." Carter chipped in. "Congratulations. I know you'll be the best the school's ever. had." I said and she came to hug me and kiss me once again. I was more than happy for her. It felt great knowing that Katherine finally got appointed as the principal knowing the kind of person she is and how hard working she can be. The position was nothing short of befitting for her. Besides, she had it coming. I mean for someone with her skill set and abilities, serving as the school's doctor and healer for all these years when she could easily join a Division wasn't something you'd see too often. "But that would make you like the youngest serving principal th
Chapter 79: Promotion
Kyle's POVJust then, the doorbell rang. Carter blinked, her hands mid-reach toward the grocery bags. I looked over at Sam, who didn’t move right away. A beat passed, and it felt like we were all silently calculating who it could be. “Katherine?” Carter asked, a hopeful lift in her voice. “Most probably,” Sam said, setting down the items in her hands before moving toward the door. I picked up the bags Sam left behind and then followed behind Carter as she wandered farther into the apartment, the door clicking shut behind Sam after she opened it. Sam's place was neat—too neat. It was almost like a showroom unit someone had tried too hard to make feel lived-in. The floors were dark wood laminate, polished to a mirror sheen. Pale cream walls gleamed under soft lighting, trimmed with muted metallic accents. There were thin vertical light-strips which ran along the ceiling corners, pulsing gently with some programmed rhythm I couldn’t quite place. It was like stepping into a catalog p
Chapter 78:
Kyle's POV I could really say nothing but just stare at Sam as she said that. I expected something like this to happen and that was my major reason for not letting them know that the friend I was coming over with me was a girl, at first. "Sam, be nice." I said to her gently, trying to give her a sign with my left eye. She said nothing but just stare at Carter. I knew she was just trying to be intimidating and all and didn't really mean it. But still, I felt like I had to really tell her to be nice. And after what seemed like a minute she just suddenly burst into laughter. "Got you guys real good, come on in." She said taking Carter's hands, smiling as she did. That smile—i've missed that smile to be honest. I missed seeing her smile, seeing her beautiful face, even though she was a badass and sometimes acted unpredictably. I just missed a lot of things about the both of them—she and Katherine. I was too lost in my thoughts that I didn't realize Carter was still standing at that
Chapter 77: Sam's Apartment
Kyle's POV It usually took about an hour to drive down from the Fourth Division base to Sam's apartment, which was tucked into the heart of the city. But since we didn’t take any military vehicles, Carter and I would have to get there by rail. This was because getting to the city by rail was more faster and convenient—though we'd however, have to take a taxi down to the train station first, which wasn't too far out from the base. Traveling by train was faster and more discreet. The rail system had become the backbone of inter-district movement, especially since the Portals began appearing. Still, it meant first grabbing a taxi to the station outside the base perimeter. It was not far, but was just enough to be annoying. Due to random and constant appearance of Portals all over the country, majority of the state roads are either destroyed and under repairs or out of commission. Some highways were barricaded, others crumbled into overgrowth and silence. The Division had rerout
