Awakening With the Renegade System

Chapter four: New Identity

The sun which had been shining brightly suddenly became veiled by thick clouds which spread across the sky like draperies. The ruin which had been lit suddenly had a drastic change to its surrounding. It became darker, shrouded with several shadows which gave it a stygian feel. It was as if countless monstrosities were hiding beneath these shadows.

In this ruin filled with debris there turned out to be no creature within—except for a lanky man who lay down unconscious—or these creatures were hiding, waiting for the right time to strike like the Steel Sabertooth from before.

A flash of lightning in the sky jolted Donald, causing him to open his eyes slowly. It was unknown if it was the lightning and continuous thundering which made him wake up or the constant notification he kept on receiving from the Renegade System.

'Huh?' he was more confused than afraid when he woke up. This was because to his utmost chagrin he was completely healed, all the hideous wounds on his body gone. There was not even a single residual pain which showed that he had just battled with a Steel Sabertooth just now.

'Well, I didn't battle...' Donald muttered to himself as he stood up, clenching his fists. There was this newfound strength within him which he couldn't explain. It seemed... inhumane.

He then took a deep breath and turned around to look down the mountain where the Steel Sabertooth had fallen. But all he could see was a black impenetrable fog. Whatever steel the creature was made of, definitely it wasn't going to survive such a fall.

At that time the familiar Renegade System's voice rung out within his head again:

CONGRATULATIONS ON BECOMING A RAIDER!

YOU HAVE FINALLY AWAKENED TO TURN THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN!

Then the familiar holographic screen appeared in front of him, causing him to be basked in the same curiosity which had almost caused him his life earlier. But this time he was vigilant enough to not put down his guard...as it mattered for someone as weak as he was.

Seeing this long information displayed by the Renegade System made his head to hurt. He couldn't help but raise his right hand to massage his forehead, feeling a headache coming on.

He was still getting over the knowledge of being reincarnated within another body and now he had to digest another information. Bronze rank? Level one? Raider? Thief class? What were all those?

And even though Donald knew what those were he was still very confused, trying to understand what was going on at this moment. How did he end up in this messy situation? Why was he chosen to reincarnate?

And even if he was chosen as a host for the socalled Renegade System why would it assign him a Thief class?! What happened to the usual Magician, Warrior or even Healer class?!

As an avid w******l reader he had come across several system books and was familiar with the terms. And this was why he wasn't entirely clueless about his host status which was displayed in front of him.

The thing that made him clueless was the strange name which the Renegade System assigned him and the memory sync of a thing. Javier Oliver? Was that the name of the original owner of the body which he reincarnated within? And why didn't the system use his real name?

He was still thinking when there was another flash of lightning, causing him to almost jump in fright. Then it was followed by a loud thundering which sounded like the roar of a behemoth.

"I'm very confused right now but it doesn't matter," Donald said as he raised his head, looking into the distance. "Everything will fall into place with time..."

Several howlings echoed through the ruin suddenly, causing Donald to suddenly have an ominous feeling. This feeling struck him like a bolt of lightning, causing him to take stifled breaths.

'I need to first get out of this ruin,' Donald told himself. 'I still have a...quest I have to complete...'

At that moment his quest status appeared in front of him, causing him to be a little surprised. He had thought that only the Renegade System had the power to show him his host status.

"What am I thinking?" he almost slapped himself. "Protagonists in the system books I've read can cause their host status to pop up whenever they want..."

"I need to find a human settlement as quick as possible," Donald told himself as he took a look around the stygian environment.

There seemed to be something hidden within this ruin, causing him to have an unsettling feeling. Without wasting time he immediately thrust out his right hand, summoning his first weapon.

Instantly another interface popped up in front of him before a dagger materialized in his hand. It was made of steel and cold to touch, a soft red hue across its surface. Its blade had two edges and seemed very sharp.

'Good,' he muttered to himself as he clenched the Steel Fang dagger tightly. It wasn't as if he was proficient in wielding a dagger. But there was one thing inherent in man. And this was the ability to protect oneself.

This was why Donald didn't feel that nervous with the Steel Fang dagger in his hand. If another creature decided to attack him then he would be sure to go for its eyes first! Weapon proficiency wouldn't matter here!

"Seeing how I'm going to start all over in this godforsaken world," Donald told himself as he took several steps forward, "it seems I'll have to accept my new identity."

There was another flash of lightning which shrouded the environment in a silvery luminance, causing all the shadows to recede. Well, this lasted for only a couple of seconds before everything was cast in silence again.

It was at this moment that Donald realized one crucial information. He didn't get any of Javier Oliver's memories! And no matter how he tried to do so, the memories didn't come. He didn't even remember the smallest one, making him to become very disturbed!

If he didn't get any of Javier Oliver's memory then how was he going to act as the original owner of the body he was currently inhabiting. Definitely there were people who know Javier Oliver and this would make it very difficult for him.

'And here's another problem,' he thought within himself, sucking in the cold air.

But this didn't deter Donald who was already walking, a strong resolve to survive in his heart. Taking a deep breath he continued, "Although I have no memories of this...Javier Oliver, this is my new identity right now..."

Soon he began climbing down the mountain, descending across the rocky path which had been crafted by the unknown civilization which had once settled atop the mountain.

"I'm no longer Donald Winston but Javier Oliver."
