The Crane

The crane rose above the port like a rusted monument.

Dante approached from the shadows, hands visible. No weapon in his holster. No blade in his boot. He'd stashed a backup piece two blocks away, but the walk to the crane left him exposed.

Sasha Kral stood at the base of the structure. Alone. Her arms crossed against the night chill.

She was smaller than he expected. Compact. Efficient. Her eyes tracked his approach with clinical precision.

"You came," she said.

"You knew I would."

She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "Webb said you were predictable. He was right."

Dante stopped ten feet away. "You're working with him."

"I'm working with everyone. That's the point." She uncrossed her arms. "Webb wants the prisoners transferred. Viktor wants the payout. I want them dead. Different agendas. Same chessboard."

"Then why meet me?"

Sasha stepped closer. "Because you're the variable Webb didn't account for. He thought you'd run. Thought you'd disappear into the shadows like a good little cleaner."

"I'm not running."

"No. You're not." She studied him. "That's why I'm offering you something Webb never will."

Dante waited.

"The truth," she said. "About the network. About the prisoners. About your handler's real employer."

"Webb already told me. I was his experiment."

"Webb told you what he wanted you to know. He didn't tell you who he answers to."

Dante's pulse quickened. "Who?"

Sasha reached into her jacket. Slow and deliberate. She pulled out a photograph and handed it to him.

Dante examined it. A group of men in suits standing in front of a corporate building. Webb was among them. So was someone else he recognized.

Senator Aldrich. The head of the oversight committee that funded the Agency's black operations.

"You're lying," Dante said.

"I don't care if you believe me." Sasha took the photo back. "The network isn't a criminal enterprise. It's a government project. Black-budget. Off-the-books. The prisoners you were supposed to transfer are whistleblowers. They know about the project. They know about the senator's involvement."

"And Webb is protecting them."

"Serving them. He was never your handler. He was your handler's handler. The man who controlled you from the top."

Dante's mind raced. Senator Aldrich. The oversight committee. The clean operations he'd run for years.

He'd been eliminating political enemies. Not criminals. Whistleblowers. Journalists. Anyone who threatened the project.

Gary found out. That's why he died.

"Why are you telling me this?" Dante asked.

Sasha's expression hardened. "Because Viktor is a fool. He thinks the transfer will make him rich. It won't. The network will kill him the moment the prisoners are delivered. They'll kill me too. The only way to survive is to stop the transfer."

"You want my help."

"I want your skills. You're the best cleaner in the business. You know how to make problems disappear." She stepped closer. "Help me destroy the transfer. Help me expose the network. And I'll give you Webb's head on a platter."

Dante stared at her. "Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't. But I'm the only person in this city who isn't trying to kill you. At least not yet."

She was right. Webb wanted him dead. Naomi sold him out. Viktor would shoot him on sight.

Sasha was his only lead.

"The prisoners," Dante said. "Where are they?"

"Warehouse 17. Two miles east. Viktor's holding them until the convoy moves at T-00."

"Security?"

"Ten men. Two shifts. Light arms. He's stretched thin."

Dante nodded. "I need to see them. Confirm they're still alive."

Sasha's eyes narrowed. "Why?"

"Because if the network wants them dead, they're my only leverage."

She considered him for a moment. Then she nodded.

"Tomorrow. 0300. I'll have a man at the west gate. He'll get you inside."

"And if I find out you're setting me up?"

Sasha smiled again. Cold and sharp.

"Then you won't have to worry about Webb. Because I'll kill you myself."

She turned and walked away. Disappeared into the shadows.

Dante stood alone at the base of the crane.

He had an ally. Maybe. An enemy. Definitely. And a way inside the warehouse.

But one question burned in his skull.

If Sasha was telling the truth, Webb was just a middleman. The real enemy was Senator Aldrich. The man who controlled the project. The man who ordered Gary's death.

Dante's hand went to the scar on his chest. The heart condition Webb knew about.

Two years left. Maybe less.

He'd make them count.

He walked back toward the city, already planning the warehouse infiltration.

But as he passed an alley, a figure stepped out of the shadows.

Naomi Chen.

Her face was pale. Her hands were raised.

"I need to talk," she said.

Dante's hand went to where his weapon should have been. Empty.

"I have nothing to say to you."

"Webb knows about the meeting. He knows about Sasha. He's sending a team to the warehouse tonight."

Dante stopped. "Why are you telling me this?"

Naomi's eyes were wet. "Because I'm trying to survive. And right now, you're the only one who can help me."

"You sold me out, Naomi. Eighteen months. Every move."

"I had no choice. Webb had my family. My sister. Her kids."

Dante's jaw tightened. "Everyone has a story."

"This one's true." She stepped closer. "I can get you inside the warehouse. Tonight. Before Webb's team arrives. I know the security codes. I know the guard rotation."

Dante stared at her. The woman who betrayed him. The woman who got Gary killed.

She was offering redemption. Or another trap.

"Give me one reason not to kill you right now," he said.

Naomi met his eyes. "Because I know where Gary hid the evidence. The files he found. The proof that connects Webb to Aldrich."

Dante's pulse quickened. "Where?"

"I'll tell you. But we have to move. Webb's team is ninety minutes out."

Dante's mind raced. Trust her. Kill her. Walk away.

Naomi's hand trembled. Genuine or staged?

He didn't know.

But the clock was ticking.

---

Would you trust someone who already betrayed you once, even if she offered you the truth?

They're going to put you down the moment you walk in."Dante's jaw tightened. He expected as much. Aldrich's offer was too clean. Too easy."What about Sasha?""She says she knows where the prisoners are. The real location. Not the black site Aldrich mentioned."Dante consid
